I also think that today’s Gospel inspires us to do more than we usually do. “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” Jesus challenges us to go beyond our prayer schedule and do more than we use to. It is not an easy task to believe in God but it will become easier if we look for opportunities to increase our faith and when we practice. Finally, I would like to welcome a new chair person at our Parish Life Commission. Her name is Kathleen Sanchez and I am very grateful to Kathleen for taking on this responsibility. I’m also very grateful to Regina Mulhern for taking the position of our Parish Life Commission secretary. Faith is a very human thing because it is very useful here on earth. We will not need faith when we move to eternity, there we will have the knowledge of God, but now, here on earth, faith is something precious. We all know that faith is a gift from God, and God is always so generous to us. God enables us to believe in him. He also gave us free will, so he does not force anyone to believe, but he helps us to make the right choice - we have his Word, we have Tradition, we have the Eucharist and other sacraments. Following the Apostles’ question, Jesus said something that I understand as encouragement for ourselves to increase faith in us. I hope this Gospel inspires us to look deeper into our souls and see what else we can do to believe even stronger. St. Benedict offers a lot to help anyone to grow in faith. Of course the most important is regular (at least weekly) participation at the Holy Eucharist, but there is more like confession that is offered weekly, the small faith groups, the first Friday devotion and much, much more. The Steward27th Sunday in Ordinary Time • September 25, 2016

This weekend we not only celebrate the twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, but also Oktoberfest here at St. Benedict and I hope everyone has a lot of fun and makes a

lot of new friends at this event. In today’s Gospel the apostles said to Jesus, “Increase our faith.” They asked for it because they understood that there is nothing more important in this life than faith. As a child I used to think of faith as something exclusively divine, and in a way it is divine because it connects us with God. But now I know that faith is also something very human.

Head and Heart Discipleship

For the past year, this page has focused on all the ways that we grow closer to Jesus on our journey of faith. As we, at St. Benedict, have had a more intentional and

specific focus on growing as disciples of Jesus, our Catechetical Commission and Spiritual Life Commission articulated that sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of what we learn (Head) and

sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of our prayer, retreat experience, mission or some encounter (Heart). So not only will we hightlight the ways that we learn (Head) about Jesus in our Catechetical Conversations,

we will also hightlight the ways we experience Jesus (Heart).

Catechetical ConversationsBeginning at 7PM in the Church October 3rd Confirming our Faith in Jesus Open to all, especially for those families whose children are celebrating Confirmation November 14th God has Reconciled the World to himself Open to all, especially for those families whose children are celebrating Reconciliation December 12th The Gift of Jesus to the world Open to all those wanting to move more deeply into the Advent/Christmas season January 9th Cementing our Faith as Jesus’ Disciples Open to all, especially for those families whose children are celebrating Confirmation February 13th The Center of our Faith is the Eucharist Open to all, especially for those families whose children are celebrating First Eucharist March 20th Family Life night How do we talk to our children about the dignity of Human Life and all the conversations that proceed form there? April 3rd It takes a Village We are all called to make our parish the safest, most secure place possible. Come hear how that is happening every day!

Meeting starts at 9:30 am. After the meeting, we will enjoy an old fashion PENNY SOCIAL. Try your luck at winning one of the unique prizes. Add to the fun by bringing an item or two that will tempt the other members to try their luck to win your prize; “white elephants” encouraged. Join the fun. Coffee and sweets will be served. Small Faith Groups Please circle the day of week and time that would best work for you! You will receive a confirmation email or phone call to confirm details. The hope, for the sake of the group, is that you would be able to make as many of the six sessions as possible! Our six week sessions will begin on the week of October 16th. We will fill the groups with no more than eight participants, on a first come first basis. Please drop off this form at the Rectory or in the collection basket. Thank you!

Retrouvaille…A Lifeline for Marriages The word Retrouvaille(re-tro-vi with a long i.) is a French word meaning rediscovery. This program helps couples heal and renew their marriages and offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6 post-weekend sessions. Registration is open for the last retreat of 2016: December 2-4th at the Lincolnshire Marriot

Contact: Robin & Phil Kain, (773) 544-0498, [email protected].

Spiritual Dream Group In this group we learn to become like a container of sacred space as a group to provide a secure connection between the individual’s inner

world and the outer world. Spiritual dream work affirms that our (nocturnal) dreams offer us support in our spiritual journey. This work helps us towards living a guided life from within with the support of others and helps us to recognize the symbolic language of the soul. All dreamers are welcome and there is no experience necessary. I encourage anyone who has been interested in their dreams, but has not had the opportunity to share and explore them further to attend. This ongoing group will meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 pm until 9 pm in the basement of the rectory in the small meeting room.

Next Session Date: 10/3Free will offering to St. Benedict Church: $5 Please contact Rachel at [email protected] if you plan to attend.
