McNelis Council #1481 January 2019 https://kofc1481.org I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Blessed New Year filled with Faith, Joy, and Prosperity. We received a very nice thank you note from Sister Deborah of Clelian Heights School for our donation and for the Christmas cards with cash gifts for some of their students and adults. She included pictures showing their excitement as they enjoyed the Christmas Season. Thank you for the generosity of everyone who attended the 4th Degree pancake breakfast at St. Thomas More University Parish and to all those who helped. It was a great success. At the December council meeting everyone voted in favor of supporting our youth by sponsoring a Little League baseball team and a girls soft- ball team for this summer. Thanks to everyone who bought items from our Knights Apparel sale. As the football season winds down we are seeing some winners from our Football Sweeps tickets. Our council looks forward to being very busy with the start of the new year. Bishop Malesic is always appreciative of our support to the sem- inarians and our Vocations collections will be at St. Bernard of Clair- vaux and the Church of the Resurrection parishes on 12/13 January and St. Thomas More University Parish on 19/20 January. Continuing with our pro-life efforts, many Brother Knights will be going to the March for Life in Washington, D.C. If you are also interested, please don't forget to call Br. Bill Ager (724.465.4522) to make your reservation for this wonderful experience. There is also a great oppor- tunity for us to “pray for life” with the 9 Days for Life Novena (see the article in this edition of The de Sales). Make sure you bring your appetite when you attend the AFC Champi- onship Game Party at our lodge on Sunday, 20 January. I would also like to make an important request. Some of our older brothers are no longer able or willing to drive, especially when it's dark. They have worked hard for many years to help make our council what it is and still enjoy attending meetings. I'm asking anyone who knows a Brother Knight in this situation to please offer to take him to the meet- ings so he can enjoy our Catholic brotherhood and fellowship. Any Brother Knights who are in need of a ride, please contact me via phone (724.422.3905) or email ([email protected]) so we can make arrangements. Fr. McNelis Council #1481 January 2019 https://kofc1481.org

I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Blessed New Year filled with Faith, Joy, and Prosperity.

At the December council meeting everyone voted in favor of supporting our youth by sponsoring a Little League baseball team and a girls soft-ball team for this summer.

Thanks to everyone who bought items from our Knights Apparel sale. As the football season winds down we are seeing some winners from our Football Sweeps tickets.

Our council looks forward to being very busy with the start of the new year. Bishop Malesic is always appreciative of our support to the sem-inarians and our Vocations collections will be at St. Bernard of Clair-vaux and the Church of the Resurrection parishes on 12/13 January and St.

There is also a great oppor-tunity for us to “pray for life” with the 9 Days for Life Novena (see the article in this edition of The de Sales).

Make sure you bring your appetite when you attend the AFC Champi-onship Game Party at our lodge on Sunday, 20 January.

I would also like to make an important request. Some of our older brothers are no longer able or willing to drive, especially when it's dark. They have worked hard for many years to help make our council what it is and still enjoy attending meetings. I'm asking anyone who knows a Brother Knight in this situation to please offer to take him to the meet-ings so he can enjoy our Catholic brotherhood and fellowship. Any Brother Knights who are in need of a ride, please contact me via phone (724.422.3905) or email ([email protected]) so we can make arrangements. You never know how much joy a small act of kindness can bring. Thank you.

MARIAN ICON SERVICE The Knights of Columbus are continuing to build upon a decades-long tra-dition with the commissioning of the 18th Annual Holy Icon. Since the in-ception of this prayer program in 1979, more than 20 million faithful Catho-lics have participated in the Knights of Columbus' internationally spon-sored holy hours. We recently were blessed to have the beautiful Icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, which was proudly displayed for more than a week on the altar of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church. A religious icon (sometimes referred to as “a window to heaven”) is a piece of art that is used in prayer. Icons often depict Christ, a saint, or another significant religious figure or event in a very spiritual way. The Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians icon shows the Blessed Virgin Mary with stars on her forehead and shoulders symbolizing her perpetual virginity. The various people gathered under Our Lady's mantle are men, women, and children who have died as martyrs for their faith.

On Monday, 3 December 2018, nearly 40 knights and fellow pa-rishioners gathered at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church for a beautiful holy hour. Our Council Chaplain, Fr. Tom Federline helped to raise our awareness of the plight of Christians being per-secuted for their faith, even to this day. He reminded us of our need to stand in prayerful solidarity with our Christian brothers and sisters and to be thankful for the religious

freedoms that we are able to enjoy in the United States. I would like to thank Fr. Tom for presiding over this beautiful service.

I would also like to thank those who were able to attend even though the weather was adverse and that we had such short notice. It is my hope that the icon will be return to our area of the Greensburg Chapter so that more of our Brother Knights and fellow Catholics can share in the prayer-fully moving experience. Br. Michael Morris Grand Knight

With the Annual March for Life fast approaching, we have an opportunity to join thousands of other Catholic men and women in praying for an end to abortion and to respect all human life from con-ception to natural death. This special novena, called 9 Days for Life will be held between 14-22 January, and is made available to us by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Each day will include a new intention, a brief reflection, related materials, and suggested life ac-tions. There are several ways for you to join the novena. You can receive daily messages by email, text, or from the free mobile app. Please visit 9daysforlife.com to sign up. Additionally, the novena can be printed directly from the website. You can also contact me via phone (724.422.3905) for a copy if you don't have access to a computer. This novena counts towards our required Knights of Columbus Pro-life programming so the more Brother Knights we have praying, the more active our council is seen. Please let me know if you participate by phone (724.422.3905) or email ([email protected]). Let's all “Live Our Faith” by praying this novena, for an end to abortion and respect of life! Br. As part of our Pro-Life programming, I would like for our Council to revive our food pantry collection in support of the St. Thomas More University Parish Food Pantry. Not only can this can help us to meet the programming re-quirements and meet eligibility for a possible rebate from Supreme councils, but it also gives us the opportunity to practice our corporal works of mercy by feeding the hungry within our Indiana community. I ask that you please bring non-perishable food items to our council meetings every 2nd Wednesday of every month. Please contact me via email ([email protected]) or phone (724.422.3905) for more details. Br. Michael Morris

Brother and Sir Knights, nominations for the 2018-2019 Knight of the Year for Fr. McNelis council #1481 are now open. Each year, our council recognizes one of our brother knights for their conviction to the four core principles of the Knights of Columbus: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. If you know of a Brother or Sir Knight within our Council who is doing exemplary work as a Catholic Gentleman and Knight of Colum-bus, please contact me via cell (724.422.9053) or email ([email protected]). Br. Tom Bresnahan

Historically, this special feast referencing Jesus’ name is closely associated with the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus. According to Jewish law, on the 8th day after his birth, a male child was circumcised, received his name, and became a full member of God’s covenant people. This is what happened to Jesus, in fulfillment of the law, as we read: “And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” (Luke 2:21)

According to the old Roman liturgical calendar, the feast of the Circumcision was celebrated on 1 January, eight days after his birth on Christmas, the same day that he was given his sacred name. Today we celebrate the So-lemnity of the Mother of God, the Theotokos, on 1 Janu-ary and honor the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus on 3 January.

For Catholics, Jesus’ sacred name is the object of a spe-cial devotion. Devotion to the Most Holy Name of Jesus was popularized by St. Bernardine of Siena, a 15th centu-ry Fransiscan, often symbolized by the monogram “IHS” (sometimes called a Christogram), which is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of Jesus’ Name
