Grand Knight’s Report, continued cil and we need volunteers. Families are encouraged to help their Knights. Please, please sign up at the Business meeting, or call John Orso at (815)-477-1048 or Ted Duda at (815)-455-3713. Please give of your time.

Finally, when the Fall season arrives, we will be serving up brats, dogs, burgers, chips and drinks at the annual Johnny Appleseed festival in downtown Crystal Lake. Help will be needed and I ask that again you try and give of your time. This is a good moneymaker for the council and great exposure. Bring plenty of form 100’s as someone just might want to join us.

And some good news. I was at Colonial Restaurant a few weeks ago and someone behind me was saying “Hey!, Hey!.” I turned and it was Jim Punda. He looked aware and he looks much improved, though still wheel-chair bound. And, our Past State Deputy from our council, Joe Kaltwasser called me and would love to hear from the members. His address is 0N 801 Friendship Way,# 2102, Geneva, IL 60134 – phone number is (630)-578-7985. Give Joe a call…..

And pray for our returning students and teachers this year.

From Our Membership Director Brother Knights,We have received our recruiting goals for the new fraternal year from Su-preme. We are looking to add twenty-two new members and seven new insurance members to our council. We will need YOU to bring in those new members. Remember to always carry a form100 with you. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to join our ranks. Most potential members are just waiting to be asked. Rick [email protected]

Deputy Grand Knight’s Report Greg Ives

Dear Brother Knights,

During the August Social Meeting some of us talked about the little steps we take as a council, and how they help us make a huge impact in our parish and community.

It’s easy to put focus on the big events – our successful dinners, Tootsie Roll Drive, Christmas tree sales, and more – but all of us can look at some of the smaller things that are also helping make great inroads. The week-end of Aug. 16-17, Membership Director Rick Kendzior spearheaded distribution of Knights of Columbus fam-ily prayer cards after each mass. On Tuesday, Knight of the Year Kevin Scanlan held an evening rosary at the Rosary Walk.

Both are seemingly small events. We didn’t make a nickel, and we didn’t fill a room full of tables. We did help to enhance our evangelical side – a side of the Council many parishioners do not often see. Through these events, we will help change the perception that we do a great job with breakfasts, donuts and dinners. Those are indeed important, but so is our faith side – enhancing prayer, evangelizing and defending the Catholic faith.

Thanks to Rick and Kevin for hosting both events. On the surface they may seem innocuous, but they delivered big-time in so many ways.

The Annual Great Lakes Catholic Men’s Conference is right around the corner – well sort of. It’s scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16, at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. It’s an event that has changed the lives of many men over the past 19 years, and we are going to be taking on a leading role promoting it within St. Thomas.

This year, Council 3880 will be sponsoring St. Thomas’ participation in the conference. What does that mean? Collectively, we will work to promote and organize it, and make sure we sign up as many men and sons as pos-sible this year from St. Thomas. If you want to know more about the benefits of the conference ask our own GK Tim Hicklin and he will be glad to share his experience with you.

We will also propose to the membership that the Council pay for the admission fee of sons who attend from the parish. It is a true “Fathers for Good” event, and we want to encourage dads to make it a family affair. This year’s speakers include Relevant Radio’s Drew Mariani and Bishop of Springfield Thomas J. Paprocki – the Holy Goalie. Closing mass will be celebrated by our own Bishop Malloy.

Details on the conference can be found at www.thetalk.org. We will be selling reduced price tickets after masses beginning in late September. If you have any questions, please call me at 847-338-4672 or email me at [email protected].

The National Scout Jamboree has come and gone but it will certainly not be forgotten. It was the first time the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) in idyllic West Virginia hosted an event of this magnitude or any magnitude for that matter. This was the inaugural outing and what a stress test it was. 30,000 scouts, 7,000 scouters and 5,000 volunteers took up residence at SBR from July 15th until July 24th.

Traveling by bus from Rockford, four intrepid Scout troops and one brave Venture crew headed to SBR for adventures ranging from aerial events (zip line) to white water rafting and everything in between. First order of business was to set up camp and get the vittles for dinner. All meals were prepared in camp and each patrol took turns cooking. All attendees at SBR went to the opening ceremony that showed the sheer numbers of folks in attendance. This was the kick off and then all went to the various activity areas to enjoy days filled with BMX, archery, pistol and rifle shooting, paddle boarding, swimming, hiking, skateboard-ing, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting and zip lining. They had the occasional storm and the heat was intense. They had to make sure to stay hydrated to stay out of the infirmary.

Patch trading was a big activity at SBR for many of the scouts. There were scouts from all 50 states and several foreign countries represented as well. I know my son Brian enjoyed the art of the deal when working his trades and came home with some very interesting patches. The troops also had a day of service where they went into the surrounding communities encompassing nine different counties and did various projects for the betterment of the local community. The projects including painting homes, clearing paths, repairing fences and other worthwhile en-deavors. Another show was held for the masses on Saturday that included Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs and a concert by Three Doors Down. Sunday had a Catholic Mass in the rain celebrated by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States. There were other denominations celebrating their faithsas well. The intrepid travelers returned home exhausted from their adventures but all had so many stories to tell and experi-ences to share it didn’t matter that they got in at midnight eleven days after they left. There were a few glitches and issues for a first time event of this size at SBR but all in all the trip was a rousing success and certainly created a life-time of memories for my scout. Thank you all for your continued support of Pack 127 and Troop 127 in making our young men future leaders of our great country. God bless you and your families.

The Family That Prays Together Stays Together

Vocation Support Raffle--We Want You!!

In order to promote family prayer and to acknowledge the Knights of Columbus Family Week, our council distributed over 1500 Family Prayer cards to the parishioners of St. Thomas the Apostle on the weekend of August 17th and 18th . They cards were well received, and many people commented on the beauty of the picture portrayed on the front of the card.

We hope that we have raised the awareness of the importance of family prayer and that those who received the cards will put them to good use.

If anyone still needs cards we have more available. Please consider sharing them with your friends and relatives as well.

Thanks to all brother Knights who helped distribute the cards that weekend. Your help was very much appreciated.

Family Golf OutingOur annual Knights of Columbus Family mini-golf outing was a big success. It was held Sunday July28 at Lippold Park. We only had about 19 participate, out of 45 who signed up, because of the weather being “iffy.” But as it turned out, it was a wonderful and fun afternoon after all. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event.
