Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

As we approach Lent, the Gospel invites us to take a good, hard look

at ourselves, and to let go of our feelings of superiority. What can we

boast about when compared to God’s holiness? Should we be pointing

out the shortcomings of others when ours are in such plain sight? Jesus

reminds us that “every tree is known by its own fruit”(Lk 6:44).

This Lent let us commit ourselves to a deep change of heart, so that

we may produce good fruit out of the store of goodness in our hearts.

Let us ask the Lord to bless our efforts to be firm in faith, hope, and

love, knowing that by ourselves we can do nothing. May He pour his

grace into our hearts that we may devote ourselves to prayer, fasting

and almsgiving and so grow closer to him. God bless you!

Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo C) Reflexión Dominical

Al acercarnos a la Cuaresma, el Evangelio nos invita a entrar en

nosotros mismos y contemplar nuestro corazón, descartando todo

sentimiento de superioridad. Pues ¿de qué podemos enorgullecernos

cuando nos comparamos a la santidad de Dios? ¿Está acaso bien que

señalemos las fallas de otros cuando las nuestras son tan visibles?

Jesús nos recuerda que “cada árbol se reconoce por sus frutos” (Lc

6,44).

Esta Cuaresma hagamos el compromiso de un cambio radical que

produzca buenos frutos del tesoro de nuestro corazón.

Pidamos al Señor que bendiga nuestros esfuerzos para que

permanezcamos firmes en la fe, la esperanza y el amor, sabiendo que

nada podemos hacer por nosotros mismos. Que Él derrame su gracia

en nuestros corazones para que podamos dedicarnos a la oración, el

ayuno y la limosna y así acercarnos más a Él. Que Dios los bendiga.

Enriched by His poverty

(cf. 2 Cor 8:9) This Ash Wednesday we will start the season of Lent, a time of going into

the desert, of giving, of donation. In his Lenten message for 2014, Pope

Francis tells us that Lent “is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well

to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by

our own poverty.“

Fasting itself is a sign of giving, of giving up consuming something that

produces a fleeting and momentary pleasure; it is a sign that helps us ask

ourselves what shall we do with the product of this fast, because that is

the fullest sense of giving: when I give, when I give myself, I am giving

something of me to someone who needs it more. I “break” and share

myself in imitation of the Lord, Who gave Himself up on the cross for all.

Like the seed that dies when it’s put in the soil to produce abundant fruit.

Lent is an invitation to reflect how to give yourself by giving of your time,

your talent and your money to those who need it most; those who are at

the door, like Lazarus, waiting.

Enriquecidos por su pobreza (cf. 2 Cor 8,9)

Este Miércoles de Ceniza comenzaremos el tiempo de Cuaresma,

tiempo de desierto, de despojo, de donación. En el mensaje para la

Cuaresma de 2014 el Papa Francisco nos dice que “es un tiempo

adecuado para despojarse y nos hará bien preguntarnos de qué

podemos privarnos a fin de ayudar y enriquecer a otros con nuestra

pobreza”.

Comenzar ayunando es ya un gesto de despojo, de dejar de consumir

algo que nos da una satisfacción efímera y momentánea; es un signo

que nos ayuda a preguntarnos qué haremos con el resultado de este

ayuno, porque ese es el sentido más pleno del don: cuando dono, me

dono, doy algo de mí a alguien que lo necesita más, me parto y me

comparto imitando al Señor entregándose en la cruz, dándose todo por

todos, como la semilla que cuando es abrazada en la tierra muere pero

para dar fruto y un fruto abundante

La cuaresma es una invitación para reflexionar cómo darte a través

de tu tiempo, de tu talento y de tu dinero a aquellos que más lo

necesitan y están allí como Lázaro a la puerta y esperando.

Schedule for Ash Wednesday: there will be Mass in English with imposition of ashes at 8 am and again at 5 pm in the church. Imposition of ashes, no Mass, will take place at 12 noon. A bilingual Mass with imposition of ashes will take place at 7 pm. Horario del Miércoles de Ceniza: se celebrará misa en inglés con imposición de ceniza a las 8 am y a las 5 pm en la iglesia. This Lent make your journey to Easter more fruitful by attending daily Mass. Mass will be celebrated in English in the church every morning at 8 am, and in Spanish at 7 pm on Tuesday in the church and Thursday in the chapel. Esta Cuaresma haga que su camino a la Pascua dé más fruto asistiendo a la misa diaria. Tendremos misa diaria en inglés en la iglesia de lunes a viernes a las 8 am, y en español a las 7 pm los martes en la iglesia y los jueves en la capilla.

During Lent there will be a Holy Hour of Adoration after the morning Mass on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the church, with all-day Adoration as usual on Thursdays in the chapel. Stations of the Cross, in English, will be prayed on Fridays after the morning Mass in the church whenever possible. In celebration of the solemnity of St. Joseph, a Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Liturgy (traditional Latin Mass) will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 pm in the church, preceded by a short catechesis. Holy Lives / Vidas Santas VENERABLE ANA JULIA DUQUE HECKNER (1898-

1993) — In religious life María Berenice, she was born in Colombia in1898. A devout young woman, she entered the novitiate of the Dominicans of the Presentation in 1917. She was a member of this congregation for 33 years, teaching in various schools and holding other posts within the Congregation. At the same time, she works closely with the poor in the marginal neighborhoods of Medellín.

Wishing to conform herself more closely to doing God’s will, she receives the support of Archbishop Joaquín García Benítez of Medellín and of her Provincial Superior, Mother María Inés, in trying to find a way for poor girls to enter religious life without any distinction of race or social status.

After a long struggle, she receives permission to found the congregation of the Little Sisters of the Annunciation, whose charism is humility and simplicity. She consecrated her long life to extend this work which is now present in 10 countries. Pope Francis has recognized her heroic virtues and declared her Venerable.

VENERABLE ANA JULIA DUQUE HECKNER (1898-1993) — En religion María Berenice, esta colombiana nació en 1898. Joven piadosa, ingresó en el noviciado de las HH. Dominicas de la Presentación en 1917, congregación en la que vivió y trabajó durante 33 años. Maestra en varios colegios de su Congregación, desempeñó en ella otros cargos, compaginando esas tareas con el apostolado con la gente marginada en los barrios pobres de Medellín.

Deseando cumplir lo más perfectamente posible la voluntad de Dios, con el apoyo de Mons. Joaquín García Benítez, arzobispo de Medellín y de Madre María Inés, Superiora Provincial de la Presentación, con quienes compartía el ideal de encontrar caminos de consagración en la vida religiosa para jóvenes pobres, sin distinción de raza ni condición social, tras largos años de lucha obtuvo permiso para realizar la obra de sus sueños, fundando las Hermanitas de la Anunciación, con un carisma de humildad y sencillez. La fundadora dedicó su prolongada vida a extender su obra que hoy está presente en 10 países. El Papa Francisco ha reconocido sus virtudes heroicas, declarándola Venerable.

Lenten Message, 2014 He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich

(cf. 2 Cor 8:9)

Dear brothers and sisters, may this Lenten season find the whole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ. We can do

this to the extent that we imitate Christ who became poor and enriched us by his poverty. Lent is a fitting time for

self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own

poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust

a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.

May the Holy Spirit ... sustain us in our resolutions and increase our concern and responsibility for human destitution, so that we can become merciful and

act with mercy.

Mensaje de la Cuaresma de 2014 Se hizo pobre para enriquecernos con su pobreza

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, que este tiempo de Cuaresma encuentre a toda la Iglesia dispuesta y solícita a la hora de testimoniar a cuantos viven en la miseria material, moral y espiritual el mensaje evangélico, que se resume en el anuncio del amor del Padre misericordioso, listo para abrazar en Cristo a cada persona. Podremos hacerlo en la medida en que nos conformemos a Cristo, que se hizo pobre y nos enriqueció con su pobreza. La Cuaresma es un tiempo adecuado para despojarse; y nos hará bien preguntarnos de qué podemos privarnos a fin de ayudar y enriquecer a otros con nuestra pobreza. No olvidemos que la verdadera pobreza duele: no sería válido un despojo sin esta dimensión penitencial. Desconfío de la limosna que no cuesta y no duele.

Que el Espíritu Santo (…)sostenga nuestros propósitos y fortalezca en nosotros la atención y la responsabilidad ante la miseria humana, para que seamos misericordiosos y agentes de misericordia.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast for all Catholics between 18 and 59 years of age. One full meal and two smaller,

meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics

14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

The FUTURE CITY NATIONAL COMPETITION was held in Washington DC this past weekend, with the participation of over 40,000 students from the US and China. Our school won the Best Indoor Environment Award by ASHRAE. It is with great pride that we thank our students, Mrs. Salavarría, Mrs. Pennekamp, Mrs. Recinos, and the parents for this accomplishment.

3K is learning all about the letter V this week! Benjamín Hernández (3rd Grade) came by the 3K classroom to play the violin.

STREAM testing: Model Structure Jell-O Earthquakes In this challenge, teams of students were given a limited amount of resources to build a structure that will withstand a simulated earthquake. In the process, they will discover some of the cost effective ways a building can be built to withstand an earthquake.
