Dear Parishioners,

And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’

will be answerable to the Sanhedrin….

Jesus reminds us that anger is the source of many evils. In the Gospel

Jesus tells us that anger is the mo%ve behind murder, as the insul%ng

epithets are steps that may lead to it. For that reason Jesus offers this

admoni%on, and forbids us from using abusive speech. Raqa: an

Aramaic means “imbecile,” or “blockhead,” or any other demeaning

and derogatory adjec%ves. The ascending order of

punishment or judgment(by a local council?), then a trial beforethe

Sanhedrin, resul%ng in condemna%on toGehenna, points to a higher

degree of seriousness in each of the offenses. The Sanhedrin: was

the highest court of Judaism. Gehenna, in Hebrew, was

called the “Valley of Hinnom,” southwest of Jerusalem, the

center of an idolatrous cult where children were offered in sacrifice (see2Kgs 23:10;Jer 7:31).

It was a fearful place covered in smoke. For that abomina%on it was deemed by God as a dark

valley or the valley of death. The 23rd psalm refers to it: “Even though I walk in through the

valley of darkness, I fear no evil you are with me with your crook and staff that gives me

courage...” In Greek “hinnom” was translated as in the New Testament asGehenna. Today it is

referred to a “Hades” or “Hell”. It is a name given to this terrible place or state of punishment,

that by our evil, leads us on the pathways to death rather than life. In the Rosary we pray the

Fa%ma prayer a=er each decade: ‘Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell,

and lead all souls into heaven, especially those most in need of your mercy…” (i.e. all of us)!

Peace always, Fr. David

Salvador Dali, Hell Vision with Our Lady of Fa<ma
