What Is Lent?

Communion Update

February 4th

8:30 service only

This first day of Lent reminds us that unless we are willing to die to our old selves, we cannot be raised to new life with Christ. The first step of this journey calls us to acknowledge and confront our mortality, individually and corporately… During the imposition of ashes the words: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3: 19) are repeated again and again. We are to remember that we are but temporary creatures, always on the edge of death.

TOWNHALL MEETINGThe Long-Range Planning Committee is asking church members for their feedback concerning the future of our church. There will be several scheduled opportunities for members to participate:

1ST TOWN HALL MEETING: Wed. Jan 31 | 6:15 pm | Sanctuary 2ND TOWN HALL MEETING: Sun. Feb 11 | 9:45 am | Sanctuary

YOUTH MEETING: Sun. Feb. 18 | 7:15 pm

If you are unable to attend one of this meetings you can fill out a survey online or on paper. The paper copies will be available at the welcome desk outside the Great Hall. We are hopeful that the entire membership can participate.

Just as the school calendar moves from the first day to Christmas break, then the last school day before summer vacation, so our church calendar moves from Advent, where we prepare to celebrate the Savior’s birth, then to Easter, where we celebrate his resurrection. But before Easter, comes Lent.

Lent begins on February 14th at 6:45 p.m. at our Ash Wednesday service. This is a worship service of deep symbolism where the forehead of everyone in attendance will be marked with ashes. The Companion to our Book of Common Worship describes the imposition of ashes this way:

As you know, on Easter we celebrate Christ’s victory over the grave. However, Lent offers us the great opportunity to recognize the gift of Christ’s saving death in light of our frail mortality, and to turn to him fully. Therefore, I call on you to observe a Holy Lent, marked by repentance, meditation, prayer, and penitence.
