1. Introduction Thank you for being part of the Fox Insight Wearables study! This Installation Guide provides detailed directions for setting up your Pebble watch and syncing the watch with your smartphone. It also includes information about what is requested of you as a participant in this study. Active participation requires you to wear the Pebble watch provided in this package on your wrist on the side most affected by your Parkinson’s symptoms and to use both the Pebble and Fox Insight app on your Android smartphone for at least six weeks. Before you start, check the contents of this package. It should include your Pebble watch and packaging to return the watch if it is damaged. Help and support are available to you at all stages of the study.

2. Installing the Pebble Watch Application
First, you will install the Pebble app on your smartphone.
This app allows your smartphone and your Pebble watch to communicate.
Please note that this step of the process requires you to have a Google account to
access the Google Play store. If you do not have a Google account visit
https://accounts.google.com/signup to create one.
1. Open the Google Play Store on your phone (icon in image below).

2. Press the magnifying glass at the top right corner to search the Play Store.
3. In the text box at the top of the screen type “Pebble” and then press the
magnifying glass on your keyboard to run the search.

4. Select the app labeled Pebble (black & gray icon).
5. You should now see the page for the Pebble app (black & gray icon).
Press “Install” then “Accept.”

6. The app will now download and install. This may take several minutes. When the last
screen appears, press “Open.”
3. Pairing the Watch and Phone
The Pebble app is now installed. Next, you will “pair” the Pebble watch to connect with
your smartphone through a Bluetooth connection. This process only needs to be done
once. For the following series of steps, turn your watch on, keep it plugged in and close
to your mobile phone (within 30 feet).
1. The app will open to an orange screen and will prompt you to select your watch
model. Scroll to the left or right to select your watch model. Once you see your
watch model on the screen press “Continue.”

2. Press “Create Account”, “Agree” to the License Agreement, type in your email
address and choose a password. Once you’ve filled in all the details press
“Create Account.”

3. Press “Continue.”
4. “Allow” the app to turn on Bluetooth, and press the name of your pebble device
(should be only one device on this screen).

5. You will see a request to pair your phone and the watch via Bluetooth. Select
“Pair” on your phone and “Press” the top button on right side of watch. Once you
pair the devices, you will be forwarded to a screen titled “Yippee!” Press “Update
my Pebble.”

6. Press “Continue.”
7. Plug in the charger for your Pebble and press “Continue.”

8. In the next few minutes your Pebble watch will run through an operating system
update. This may take 5-10 minutes.
Both your phone and Pebble will show several different screens (see images
below). There is no need for interaction on your behalf, simply validate the
Pebble is being charged, and the phone and Pebble are close to each other.

9. Once the system upgrade has completed you should see the below screens on
your phone and Pebble. Press “Continue.”
10. Press “Set language.”

13. Press “Open settings screen.”
14. Press “Pebble.” This is crucial for the Pebble to properly communicate with the
Fox Insight app.

15. Press “Ok” to enable Pebble.
16. You will be returned to the Pebble app, and asked to select a watch face. Select
any watch face and press the arrow at the top right corner.

17. Press “Done.”
18. You have finished the installation of the new Pebble app! The current screen is
the main screen in which you can manage your Pebble’s settings.

19. Return to your phone’s home screen. You will now see the Pebble app icon.

4. Installing the Fox Insight Wear Application
Next, you will install the Fox Insight Wear app on your Pebble watch and the Fox
Insight app on your smartphone. This app works in tandem with the Pebble app &
watch to collect your data.
1. Launch the Pebble app from your phone’s home screen. Press the two squares
at the top of the screen in between the watch and alarm icons.

2. Click on the red + icon in the bottom right corner.
3. Click on the magnifying glass at the top right corner.

4. Type “Fox Insight Wear” into the search box and press the magnifying glass on
your keyboard. The app should appear first in the results below. Click “Add.”
5. Once the Fox Insight Wear app is installed, your watch will vibrate once. Next, a
pop-up will appear on your phone. Click on “Go get it.”

6. You will be directed to the Fox Insight app page in the Google Play store. Click
on “Install.”
7. Click “Accept” to allow the app to use the features of your phone to collect and
transmit data.

8. The app will begin downloading. This may take a few minutes depending on the
speed of your internet connection.
9. Once the app is installed, click on the “Open” button to launch the app.

10. The application will load and a log-in screen will appear. Log in with the username
and password that you use for the Fox Insight website (your username is the same
as your email address).
11. Once you have logged into the smartphone app, your watch will display the
words “Fox Insight Wear.” This indicates the watch has detected the application
on your phone.

12. Return to your phone’s home screen. Notice the icon for the Fox Insight App has
been added. Press the Pebble app icon.
13. Press the back button until you return to the watchfaces page of the Pebble app
(see image below). Press the ringing bell icon to configure the notifications you
will receive through the watch.

15. In this section you can define which apps will send you notifications via the
Pebble watch. You can disable or enable any app of yours as you wish, but you
must validate that the Fox Insight app is enabled. An app is enabled if the ball to
the right of the app name is orange and shifted to the right.

5. How to Use the Pebble Watch
Here are some tips for using your new Pebble watch.
Pebble Watch Buttons
On the right side, the center button is used to open the watch’s main menu. It can also
be used to 'select' an item in a list. The top and bottom ('up' and 'down') buttons are
used for scrolling through lists.
The left button, called the 'back' button, is used for returning to the previous screen.
Please note, when running the Fox Insight Wear app on the Pebble watch, you will not
be able to run other Pebble apps.

Charging the Pebble Watch
To charge the Pebble watch, plug in the charging cable as shown below.
The screen will change from blank to display “Pebble” when connected properly.
We recommend that you charge your watch for at least 60-90 minutes a day.
For more information, refer to the Pebble instruction guide within the Pebble box.
Wearing the Pebble Watch
Wear the watch on your wrist on your side most affected by PD symptoms.
Keep the watch within 30 feet of your phone at all times. This proximity is
required for data collection.
We encourage you to wear the watch as often as you feel comfortable.
The more you wear the watch, the more data you are contributing about your
life with Parkinson’s disease.
The watch is waterproof and can be worn when you shower or swim.

Ensuring Your Smartphone and Watch Are Connected
If you notice that your smartphone and watch are no longer connected, consult our
troubleshooting documents at www.michaeljfox.org/wearfoxinsight/support or contact
our support team via phone or email.
On the Pebble watch, the word “Disconnected” will appear on the screen if you are
having connectivity issues. If the phone and watch are connected, the words “Fox
Insight Wear” will appear.
On your smartphone, two green icons will appear in the upper left corner when the
phone and watch are connected. Absence of these icons indicates connectivity issues.

Fixing Common Problems
1. If your smartphone and watch become disconnected:
Make sure the phone and Pebble watch are within 30 feet of each other
and your smartphone’s Bluetooth is on.
Open the Pebble app on your smartphone. Reset the connection by
disconnecting then reconnecting the watch through the app.
When your problem is solved your watchface will switch from displaying the word
“Disconnected” to “Fox Insight Wear.”
2. If your Pebble battery is low:
Charge the Pebble watch.
3. If another error message appears on the Pebble:

6. How to Return the Watch (If Necessary)
In some rare cases, the Pebble watch may be damaged or malfunctioning and
need to be returned. When your unit experiences a failure, it may qualify for
Pebble’s warranty replacement. The warranty process is quick and easy.
Before taking steps to return the watch, we ask that you contact our support
team to 1) try to work through the issue and 2) let them know that you will be
sending the watch back.
If after talking to the support team, you still need assistance and think you may
need a new watch, please follow these simple steps:

- Summary of the issue
- Picture of the failure (if applicable)
- The serial number of the watch (found on the back of the unit)
- Note that you are part of the Michael J. Fox Foundation Study
The support team at Pebble will promptly respond to your message, ask a
few additional questions, and provide you with a replacement watch, if
necessary. They will also send you information about how you can return
your malfunctioning watch as well as pay for the return shipping.
