Halloween Trunk-or-Treat Giraffes and zombies and superheroes – oh my! Mick and Arlene McCue thank all those who came out to supply treats for Foxfire kids from their carts/trunks on Halloween. An extra special thanks to those “ghouls” who haunted the hayride, which was a huge new hit this year. Thanks also to the FPOA; photographer extraordinaire Dave Rossman; master hayride supplier/driver Scott Patterson; our police and firemen; and the cleanup crew, the Siedlers, Nelsons and Pattersons. A good time was had by all. It really does takes a village to make it happen – and we are a village! See you next Halloween!

Clubs

A Week in Winter, by Maeve Binchy, Ireland’s “best loved and most recognizable author of her gen-eration,” was completed just a few weeks prior to her death in 2012, and published posthumously. It was Foxfire Book Club’s October selection, chosen by Carole Hunter, who also facilitated the discussion. Binchy’s books have been translated into 37 languages and have sold over 40,000,000 copies worldwide. Her debut novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in 1982 and sold for the largest sum ever paid in Britain for a first novel.

It was the book Circle of Friends (1995), a best-seller which was later made into a movie, that brought her to the attention of U.S. readers. Most of her books are set in Ireland and deal with the day-to-day issues of everyday people: friendship, love, hard-ships, family and most of all, an unquench-able spirit. Her novel Tara Road (2005) was an Oprah Book Club pick.

A Week in Winter is the story of Geraldine “Chicky” Starr, who, after living in New York City for many years, returns to her hometown of Stoneybridge on the coast of western Ireland. Her dream is to convert an old run-down manor house, owned for generations by the family of the elderly Sheedy sisters, into a country inn. She recruits an assortment of locals to help with repairs and renovations. The end result is Stone House, a warm and welcoming bed-and-breakfast set high on a cliff overlooking the stormy Atlantic Ocean.

The book progresses into separate chapters, intro-

ducing the reader to a cast of colorful characters who are the first week-long guests to stay at Stone House. Their stories are diverse, from the bitter headmistress of a prestigious girls’ school, to a disillusioned American movie star, to a young Dutch businessman struggling with duty over desire, to a dismayed couple who had hoped to be spending the week in Paris ... plus

a husband and wife doctor duo, a young woman unexpectedly thrown together with her jealous future mother-in-law, and a clairvoyant librarian. All are at crossroads in their lives. Some readers felt the characters were not as well-developed as in Binchy’s previ-ous novels, and that the stories were sketchier. Although the book is not in the style of her previous novels and perhaps not as absorbing as her other works, for her fans it aptly serves as a fitting final tribute to one of Ireland’s most beloved storytell-ers. And especially because it is her final

book, it is worth reading. Binchy still remains a master storyteller, bringing the reader into her stories and making them feel they are part of everyday Irish life.

Book Club meets at Town Hall at 3 p.m. the third Monday of the month, and is open to all residents of Foxfire. December’s meeting will be our traditional holiday luncheon. The next regular meeting will be in January.

Foxfire Bridge Foxfire Bridge has been a longstanding favorite

since the earliest days of the community and golf course, going back to the ’70s. The group meets every Thursday afternoon and plays duplicate bridge. Players use various methods, from the old Goren method to the new Audrey Grant style – or they just wing it! Each week you have a different partner, so you adjust your play to your partner.

FF duplicate bridge plays 20 boards. Duplicate bridge is the same deal of cards (the board), played by all pairs, and scoring is based on relative performance.

Many of the group are avid players and play at other clubs: Pinewild, Pinehurst, the Bridge Studio, etc. Betty Dresher has been the Foxfire Bridge coordi-nator for the past 10 years, adeptly managing the cor-rect multiple of four players at each table, assembling the boards, and scoring each week.

All are welcome to play. Inquiries about play can be directed to Betty at 910-673-5590. For bridge lesson information, contact Helen Kirk at 910-400-5211.

Euchre, Anyone?

Interest has been expressed to FoxTrax to inquire about forming a Foxfire euchre group, mixed gender, with beginners welcome. If you are interested in being part of such a group, call 910-400-5211.

Tom McClellan

This past July, Tom McClellan purchased the house on 3 Dogwood Court and quickly began arranging for a contrac-tor to completely remodel his new home. Tom moved from Pennsylvania into his new Foxfire home in September. The remodeled interior looks amazing. Tom will stay busy for quite a while managing the rest of the interior work as well as overseeing all the projects he has planned to spruce up the exterior of his home. The back of his house overlooks the 12th hole on the Grey Fox Course.

Tom retired two years ago from Co-Planar, Inc. a preci-sion metal stamping company. Prior to his employment with Co-Planar, he had worked for Heyco Metals. While working with Heyco, he and his family lived Malaysia for a number of years, where he was involved in setting up a new factory.

Tom decided to move south after enduring another bru-tal winter up north. He considered moving to Florida, but decided on Foxfire, where he could enjoy living near his close friends Jack and Leslie Frusco, whom he has known for more than 30 years. Tom was born and raised in Ansonia, Conn. He has two children. His son is married

and lives in Arlington, Va., and works with computer sys-tems. His daughter, her husband and their 1½-year-old-son live in Virginia Beach. His son-in-law is in the Navy assigned to SEAL Team 2.

Tom loves to play golf and has already become an ac-tive member of the Foxfire Men’s Golf Association. He has a beautiful German Shepherd named Storm. We wish Tom a warm Foxfire welcome.

Ramiro and Pam Reyes For the past seven or eight years Ramiro and Pam Reyes have visited their good friends in Foxfire, Jon and Sue Sedlak. They love the Foxfire community and in early October moved from their home in Pennsylvania into their newly built home at 35 Forest Lake Drive. The back of their house offers a beautiful view of the fairway of the 14th hole on the Grey Fox Course. Ramiro is originally from San Francisco. He is employed as a marketing manager for an insurance company based in Hartford, Conn., which specializes in offering insurance coverage for heavy equipment. He works from home and travels to company sites around the country as needed. Pam is originally from Chicago. Five years ago she retired from her position as a client service manager with Liberty

Mutual Insur-ance Company. Pam and Ramiro are both avid golfers. They exercise routinely and are planning to join the First Health Fitness Center, but their real passion is caring for res-cue dogs and cats. In Pennsylvania Pam did volunteer work with an ani-mal rescue group, which included being foster guardians for dogs and cats. They now own three rescue dogs (a Labrador retriever, a Catahoula and a mixed breed hound) and two rescue cats. Pam and Ramiro have two daughters. One lives in Orlando, and the other lives in Oregon. They have two grandchildren, who live in Oregon. Their granddaugh-ter is 11 and their grandson is 9. We wish Pam and Ramiro a warm Foxfire welcome.

Rodger Overholser and Sandy Levesque

After he retired from his position as a judge in Sedona, Arizona, in 2013, Rodger and Sandy wanted to find their ideal retirement area. After doing some research and visiting Rodger’s son in Maryland, they decided to a travel south. One of their stops was in Pinehurst, which they immediately loved. They rented a home in Pinehurst No. 6 and just recently moved into their new home at 1 Lowell Court. Rodger was born in San Diego, but grew up in Iowa be-fore returning to San Diego. He has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad to pursue his love of pho-tography. He is also considering giving golf another chance. Sandy retired several years ago from her business as a manufacturer’s representative for sportswear. She is from California but also has lived in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and Colorado before moving to Sedona, where she and Rodger met and were married. Sandy’s hobbies include reading,

gardening and taking her regular morning walk. Rodger has three sons and one daugh-ter. One son lives in Maryland, an-other lives in Los Angeles, and a third son and his daughter reside in Vancouver,

Wash. Sandy has two daughters. One lives in Tacoma, Wash., and the other lives in New Port Coast, Calif. Com-bined, Sandy and Rodger have eight grandchildren. We welcome them to Foxfire!

Phil and Rose Blaney Phil and Rose Blaney moved into their new house at 8

North Shamrock Drive in the middle of October. They have relatives in Whispering Pines and in Myrtle Beach. Over the years they have visited the Pinehurst area many times, and they decided this would be a wonderful area to live. They moved to Foxfire from Westchester, N.Y., and are look-ing forward to the milder winters in this area.

Both Phil and Rose are retired. Phil was a manager for Grand Union supermarkets, and Rose worked for a publish-

ing com-pany. Be-tween them they have five children and six grandchil-dren. A son lives in Maryland, and the other four children all live in New York. Phil is a longtime

golfer. He has already played the Foxfire courses and plans to play other courses in the area.

Rose enjoys working around house and in the yard. In

addition, she enjoys sewing and refinishing furniture. Please welcome the Blaneys to the neighborhood.

Derek and Terry Noll At the end of October, Derek and Terry Noll moved into

their new home on 24 South Shamrock Drive. Derek is origi-nally from Pennsylvania, and Terry is originally from Maine, but they are familiar with the Pinehurst area.

Derek lived in Pinehurst for 10 years and worked at the Talamore Golf Resort. He left Pinehurst two years ago to move to Rock Hill, S.C. (just south of Charlotte), to take a position as a sales support representative for Golf Ad Corporation. The Nolls moved to Foxfire Village when Derek started his new position as corporate manager of retail sales at the Pinehurst Resort.

Terry and Derek are the proud parents of adorable twin boys, William (Liam) and Benjamin (Ben). They have a puggle (a pug and beagle mix) named Finley. As you would guess, Terry has her hands full taking care of Liam, Ben and Finley. The twins are already looking forward to next summer when they can use the village swimming pool.

We wish a warm welcome to the Noll family.

The Newcomers Committee Is Looking for You!

We are in need of a couple to replace Bob and Jean Dawson on the Newcomers Committee. Duties include a visit to each new Foxfire resident, presentation of an introductory package, taking their picture and writing a short article about them for FoxTrax. Please call Mike Siedler at 910-673-3240 to let him know of your interest.

The twosome of Marilyn Grady and Page Coker teamed up to win the season-long 2014 FLGA pairs tournament. Participating teams are divided into two divisions based on the total handicap, and each month the team plays another team within their division in a match play format – a point scored for each hole that is won. Points are accumulated over the season. After completion of play within one’s own division, the leading team in Division A plays the leading team in Division B for the overall title.

Grady and Coker (from Division B) played Laverne Hess and Sue Durham (from Division A), and the

match came down to the 18th hole with the match going to Grady and Coker. Playing for third and fourth place were the teams of Kathy Lishawa and Juanita McCleney (Division A), and Kim

Spaulding and Flo LaShomb (Division B). After 18 holes, the teams were all square and all decided to end the battle there and tie the match. Special thanks to Laverne Hess, who was in charge of the tournament. – Anita Clapp

Page 6 Golf

There were many times during the 2014 FLGA season when Mother Nature was not very coop-erative, but she was quite accommodating on November 12, when the year-end golf tournament, luncheon and meeting were scheduled. Under sunny skies and warm temperatures, a nine-hole captain’s choice tournament was held on the back nine of the Old Course (holes 1-8 and 18 of the Grey Fox Course). The winning score of 36 was posted by Kathy Lishawa, Rita Ward and Debby McGovern. Three teams tied at 37.

Following the golf was a luncheon planned by FLGA social chair Pam Koos.

Debby McGovern, 2014 FLGA chair, opened the meeting by welcoming Pam Keyes, a new Foxfire resident who will be joining the group for 2015. Committee chairs presented summaries of their 2014 season, and season-long winners were announced. The winners for the season-long Grey Fox Ringers were Vicki Haidet, Kim Spaulding and Jean Brown. This trio also picked up the awards for the season-long Red Fox Ringers tour-nament. Vicki Haidet also won the award for the most chip-ins, birdies and sandies. The most

improved golfer was Diane Cray; the leading money-winner was Kim Spaulding; and once again, the “Queen of the Course,” post-ing the most rounds of golf, was Lucille Cardelle.

A vote was taken to accept the nominating committee’s slate of officers for the 2015 FLGA season. The 2015 officers are: chair, Helen Kirk; vice chair, Kim Spaulding; secretary, Anita Clapp; treasurer, MJ Sheldon; directors, Debby McGovern, Carlotta Young and Judy McCollum.

Debby passed the gavel to Helen Kirk, who discussed some of her goals for her “administration” and reminded the ladies of the committees that they had previously agreed to chair – even in a weak moment!

March 2015 will be here before we know it and another golf season will be under way. In the meantime, winter golf for the FLGA continues on Mondays and Wednesdays. – Anita Clapp

Haidet/Frusco Win Marathon FLGA Final Major

The FLGA held its final major tournament of

the 2014 golf season – Fall Ringers – in October. What was supposed to be a two day-consecutive best ball net tournament (October 15 and 16) turned into a nine-day event thanks to Mother Nature and scheduling conflicts, and in turn caused tournament chair Helen Kirk a few sleepless nights.

Round one was cancelled be-cause of weather, so Day One was played on what was originally Day Two. Two-person teams played 18 holes of golf on the Red Fox Course and posted the best net ball of the two. Leading after the first day was the team of Vicki Haidet and Leslie Frusco with a score of 64.

Because of scheduling con-flicts with the ladies, Day Two play took place over the next sev-

eral days, finishing up by October 21. During this time the teams would go out and again play the Red Fox Course and try to improve their Day One totals. At the end of a completed Day Two, two teams were tied with a score of 61: Kim Spaulding and Sue Manley, along with the Haidet/Frusco team.

The rules of the tournament state that if there is a tie, the winner will be determined by sudden death. After conversing with all of the players and

individual schedules, it was decided that the sudden death would take place on Thursday, October 23. After just one hole of sudden death (net par on No. 1), the team of Vicki Haidet and Leslie Frusco claimed victory. A special thank you to Helen Kirk for dealing with this difficult scheduling decision – a tournament which will long be remembered for its marathon play. – Anita Clapp

Tournament Raises $1,800 for Children’s Hospitals The second annual

Michael “Putter Boy” Cray golf tournament for the bene-fit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children was held on October 12 on the Grey Fox course. Sixty-six golfers par-ticipated, and over $1,800 was raised for the Shriners.

The tournament included winners in the gross, net and Calloway divisions. Mick McCue was the winner of the gross division, with a score of 73; Terry Ward won the net division, with a score of 68; and Becky Durham won the Calloway division. The overall tournament winner with the lowest adjusted net score was Terry Ward. Congratulations, Terry!

A special putting contest was conducted on the 11th hole in honor of Putter Boy’s affinity to using his putter from almost anywhere on the course. The contest in-volved one putt by each player from approximately 40 yards from in front of the green. The player whose putt came closest to the hole was anointed the “Master Putter” of the tournament. This year’s winner was Bill

Marks, who received a special prize (see photo, below) in addition to a Pinehurst Putter Boy golf towel. Well done, Bill! Both Bill’s and Terry’s names will be engraved on the “Putter Boy” trophy as the 2014 winners. The committee would like to thank everyone who generously donated prizes for the raffle, to those who were unable to play in the tournament but generously gave to the Shriners, and to all those who played in the tourna-ment and helped to make it a huge success. The committee also wishes to thank

Jeff Cowell and the staff at Foxfire Resort and Golf for their assistance with the tournament and the luncheon that followed.

This tournament is a special event for the fam-ily in light of Michael Cray’s history with the Shriners Hospitals, and they wish to extend their gratitude to everyone.

Spaulding/Grady Win 2014 BoyzNiteOut

The 2014 edition of the FMGA’s very popular and

world-famous BoyzNiteOut Tournament is in the books, and the winning team was Ed Spaulding and John Grady. The 20-team tournament was a two-day event, with different formats for the four nines and the

winner being the team with the lowest two-day score. The Ed and John Show was in command all the way. They had a surprising 1 stroke lead on the first day after shooting a score of 62, and then stunned the rest of the teams by shoot-ing 93 on the second day for a total score of 155, 7 strokes better than the 65-

97-162 shot by the second place team of Bob Dawson and Jim Rankin.

Don Nelson and Gerry LaShomb were a close third place with a score of 63-101-164. Joe Dodge and Roy Vaughn shot 68-97-165 to tie John Hunter and Wayne

Montalvo for fourth place. Terry Ward and Dennis Micallef shot 69-97-166 for sixth place.

The intrepid team of Bob Fowler and Jack Frusco won the vaunted BoyzNiteOut “Horse’s Patoot” trophy for playing absolutely crummy golf for the two days and coming in dead last. All participants agreed that they were gracious and deserving winners of this infa-mous, much feared trophy.

The tournament got off to its usual raucous start with the team drawing party on Friday night prior to the Tuesday and Wednesday, 7-8 October, dates of play. The party was held for the fifth or sixth time at the home of Gerry and Flo LaShomb, who were again very gracious hosts, and extremely brave in allowing this FMGA mob into their home. An awards dinner at the Foxfire clubhouse on Wednesday concluded the event. BoyzNiteOut chair-man Ed Spaulding was lauded for his job in organizing and running this year’s tournament, and the club served an especially delicious dinner. – Pat Ogren
