Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in "spiritual espousal" to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of "passing on to others the fruits of contemplation," Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called "my "Divine Spouse," she died at thirty-three! FEAST OF FAITH The Gospel Reading

The climax of the Liturgy of the Word comes with the proclamation of the Gospel. Everything tells us that something important is happening. We stand. We sing special acclamations. Servers with candles and sometimes incense lead the deacon or priest to the ambo, where the reading is proclaimed from a special book. All of the readings are important, but the liturgy directs special attention to the Gospel for a reason. “[A]mong all the inspired writings, even among those of the New Testament, the Gospels have a special place, and rightly so, because they are our principal source for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Saviour” (Dei Verbum, the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation of the Second Vatican Council, 18). In the Gospels, the narrative of Christ’s saving life, death, and resurrection continues to be proclaimed in our midst. Our Sunday Lectionary is structured so as to allow us to hear as much of the Gospels as possible. The readings are arranged in a three-year cycle. In Year A, the Gospel readings are taken mainly from Matthew; in Year B, from Mark and John; and in Year C, from Luke. In this way, over the course of three years, we hear a substantial portion of all four Gospels. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Father John Paul

I AM THE GOOD

SHEPHERD

Ever since the days when the early Christians painted the picture of Christ as the Good Shepherd tending his sheep on the walls of the catacombs in Rome, the image of the Good Shepherd has been a favorite in Christian circles. Generations of Christ’s followers have been comforted and consoled by the picture of Christ the Good Shepherd anxiously seeking out the lost sheep and carrying it home on his shoulder. The image provides inspiration as it expresses the type of care, compassion and guidance that Christ offers to all of us. It gives us a permanent assurance that each one of us is loved as if we were the only one. Jesus is telling us that He knows us individually and thinks so much of us that He cannot let us out of His sight. The fact that we have a special place in His heart should instill hope in us and increase our confidence. Even when sin causes us to wander and stray, the Good Shepherd is there to come to our rescue. He brings us back carrying us shoulder high into the safety and companionship of the fold. Trusting in our Divine Shepherd let us pray: “Shepherd me O Lord! Beyond my wants, Beyond my fears, From death into life”. This Sunday also coincides with the World Day of Prayer for Vocations affirming the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day of vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership and to the missionary life.

Action Needed to Stop Infanticide The USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities has announced another urgent action is needed to stop infanticide. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 619) has again been introduced in Congress to protect babies from infanticide. But efforts to bring the bill to a vote in the House are being blocked. Your action is needed to urge your Representative to sign a discharge petition that would allow this vote to occur. Some states have passed laws to expand abortion and to repeal laws providing specific protections for babies born alive after surviving an attempted abortion. The Born-Alive Act would provide these specific protections nationwide to help prevent newborns from being killed or left alone to die. We must continue to push Congress to pass the Born-Alive Act, so babies born alive following an abortion attempt are treated the same as any other newborn baby. PLEASE ACT TODAY!!! Inform your representative here: www.usccb.org/prolife/born-alive-abortion-survivors-protection-act

HELPING HANDS: While Arnold is temporarily closed at this time due to COVID, Angels Camp is open and taking safety precautions for our volunteers and clients.
