TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extreme-ly popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popu-lar or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that any-one can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious au-thority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God's very words filling our mouths. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018 Come, let us bow down in worship;let us kneel before the LORD who made us. -- Psalm 95:6

Volume 212

We will meet on Tuesday, February 13th at 10 a.m. in the Activity Center.

Our selection this month is The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware.

Join us to share your opinion of this suspenseful novel.

Listeners are always welcome.

Lent is just around the corner (Ash Wednesday is Feb-ruary 14). Often, we give up something for Lent; many give up chocolate, for example. This year, give some-thing instead. Give an hour to the Lord every week by signing up for time in the Adoration Room. Spend an hour in prayer with the Lord. You don’t want to do this by yourself? Ask another member of your family, or your Church family to join you. The Adoration Room is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am until 8:00 pm. Please contact the Church Office for more information.

GIVE AN HOUR TO THE LORD

Many improvements have been made to the Par-ish facilities over the past few years, but the kitch-en in the office building needs some attention. The kitchen is used by many groups who meet in the building or prepare for other Parish activities. The ítems we will be renovating are the stove, ov-en and counter tops. The ítems we need to re-place include the dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer. If you are interested in making a monetary dona-tion, please drop-off your donation in the church office (do not put in the collection basket, please). The office staff will ensure the donation is noted for the kitchen renovation. Thank you for your assistance.
