Readers Workshop
This month, students are reading literature. During this unit, students will make in-
ferences. In addition, students will explore possible themes and support their thinking
with text evidence.
The priority standards for this unit are:
Analyzing perspective
Inferring about characters and other story elements
Analyzing parts of a story in relation to the whole
Determining themes/cohesion
Writers Workshop
In Writing, students will write literary essays about texts they have read. Through-
out the unit, students will be taught the value of close reading of complex texts. Students
will learn how to read literature closely and write about the literature they are reading.
Students will learn to write structured essays in which they make and support claims and
analyze, and incorporate evidence. Students will also learn how to compare and contrast
themes and topics in literature. Thus, students will be taught how to cite evidence from
two texts in a purposeful way. The following standards will be addressed:
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and infor-
mation
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational
structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose
Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details
Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in
addition)
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented
Test Preparation
Everything your child has been learning this year will prepare him/her for the New York
State Exams. In addition, students will begin a formal test prep unit this month. They will
be using Ready books and they should also use i-Ready.

Fourth Grade February 2017
In February, students will begin working on Chapter 7, Add and Subtract Fractions. During
this month, the students will continue to build their understanding of fraction equivalence by
focusing on addition and subtraction of fractions. By the end of the chapter, students will be
able to:
Understand that to add and subtract fractions they must refer to parts of the same whole
Decompose a fraction by writing it as a sum of fractions with the same denominators
Use models to represent and find sums involving fractions
Use models to represent and find differences involving fractions
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction with fractions
Write fractions greater than 1 as mixed numbers and write mixed numbers as fractions
greater than 1
Add and subtract mixed numbers
Rename mixed numbers to subtract
Use the properties of addition to add fractions
Use the strategy act it out to solve multistep fraction problems
i-Ready
Students are currently using i-Ready. This online program provides rigorous individualized in-
struction in Reading and Mathematics. It pinpoints student needs down to the sub-skill level
and provides ongoing progress monitoring. Students can use i-Ready at home. Visit the web-
site to see what your child has been learning!
