JULY 7, 2019 2 SAINT BERNARD

In today’s reading, which comes to us from Luke, we hear that Jesus sends a total of seventy two disciples on an important mission. They are sent forth in pairs, two by two, to go to every location that he was planning on visiting. We see Jesus using this tactic quite often. Having the disciples go out in pairs allows them to work together to do the work that Jesus wanted them to do. It also gave them the opportunity to search out the locations where he was heading to help in preparing the people there for Jesus’ arrival. Jesus was very deliberate in sending out his disciples in pairs. In doing so, they were amongst the few laborers being sent out by the master to work on the harvest. This is an image that would have been very familiar to his followers in their day. The disciples are sent out to diligently help the harvest come to full fruition. But along the way, they will certainly face some challenges; Jesus even goes so far as to say that they will be like lambs being sent among wolves. They are, most likely, eaten. At a minimum, the disciples were to face some steep challenges in their mission. These followers are to travel lightly, carrying essentially nothing that they would need for their travels. The only things that Jesus sends with them as they head out on their journey are words of advice. When they engage a new household, they are to offer peace to all who live there. Peace is at the bedrock of Jesus’ message that his disciples are to share. If a household receives it, it returns to the missioners and one can assume they moved on their way. When a peaceful household receives them, the disciples are to remain at this household, accepting hospitality, sharing the Good News, and healing the sick. In remaining at one house, they can set up a home base from which to focus their mission of working for the Kingdom. If they themselves can be at peace in remaining in one place, even after they rushed to get there, they can focus their efforts to fully harvesting the good in that place.

Operation Backpack

Think it’s too early to think about back-to-school? Not for Operation

Backpack! Thousands of school-age children in New York City are

homeless and one of the most devastating consequences of

homelessness is the impact it can have on a child's education.

Frequent school transfers and the stigma associated with living in a shelter add up to great

hardship for these children, but thanks to the overwhelming generosity of individuals like you, more than 19,400 of them began the last school year with brand new, filled backpacks!

They felt confident and fit in effortlessly with their classmates! Last year, Operation Backpack was a record-breaking success

and is now gearing up for September 2019. Saint Bernard Parish will be participating this year to help thousands of

homeless children on their first day of classes. We will have a collection box in the vestibule of the Church in the coming weeks. Won’t you please consider donating a new backpack and/or school supplies to help these children? Due to the huge turnover in the shelter system, the children who

received last year are more than likely not there now. We will be collecting through the end of July.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process by which a person

prepares to become a member of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is one of inquiry, evangelization, prayer, study and conversion, leading to one’s

entrance into the church through Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. RCIA welcomes the unbaptized as well as

those baptized in other Christian traditions. RCIA also welcomes those who have been baptized Catholic but

who have not completed their sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this program is asked to call the Rectory now and

speak to Deacon Frank.
