The project has been thought as a new geography to the interior of the elongated Aburrá Valley, midway between Cerro Nutibara and Cerro El Volador. t is a building that seems to be anothermountain in the city! from the remote or from the top has an abstract image geographic andfesti"e! from the inside, the mo"ement of the steel structure, allows the filtered sunlight to getinside the space, which is the suitable condition for the conduct of sporting e"ents.

;ur project tooH the interior and e#terior in a unified way. The outdoor public space and sporting"enues are in a continuous space, thanHs to a large decH built through e#tensi"e stripes out, perpendicular to the direction of the positioning of the main buildings. Each of the four sporting"enues operates independently, but in terms of urban space and beha"e as one large continentbuilt with public open spaces, semi7co"ered public spaces, and indoor sports.

;ur project has three possible groupsI

Each of the four scenarios can be understood as a separate building, connected with another on anurban scale. The three new scenarios can also be understood as a single large building, related tothe e#isting "an de =edout Coliseum. The four coliseums can be understood as a great place toset both the buildings and public space.

J. The sHeleton of the project is the pattern.

9ere the structure is an organi&ation system or the understanding of "itality. t means that therelation the project proposes is its sHeleton.

2. The sHeleton of the project is made of the symmetry of the structure and the muscles.

9ere the structure is the way in which the limit or physiognomy of the project are e?ui"alent to thesHeleton. The sHeleton is on the outside or the epidermis and "ice "ersa, it is an e#pression of architecture. Architecture is ?ualified by the structure.

The intellectual structure of this project matches the supporting structure. ;n the architecture of this project the intentions that support worH, the final networH that will e"entually use the subject

and the structure or sHeleton of the building all coincide. The contraryI a containing architecture,of supposed fle#ible interior that hides the structure on the perimeter. This doesnKt ha"e anythingto do with the sHeleton because it would not be occupied as a sHeleton but as a "oid. The sHeletonthat we ha"e analy&ed doesnKt construct empty spaces.

The mi#ture of these three orders or ways of understanding the sHeleton propose a pattern forgrowth and "ariation of the project that e#pand its status. They maHe it more as a "ital and

beating form than a stable form.n the interior of the sceneries the image of the sHeleton seems raw when the trusses are e#posed, they are not longer melted down with the sHin but directly with the structure. The force lines loosea little of "igor due to its swelling and the perception of a hat becomes more e"ident. E"en theindustrial image. The project melts public space with the interior acti"ities because the structurea"oids finishing DstoppingF at the swelling. The sHeleton of this project is a real structureL

COLISEUMS

Urban permeability + built continent

This competition asked participants to design 4 independents sports units, all of them have to be in

the same area and very close to each other. Our proposal understood a group of buildings as a single

one, like a built continent that could participate in the same technical and spatial strategies, adapting

Page 18: Four Sport Scenario

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/four-sport-scenario 18/21

to the timeframe of the construction program. In this way we proposed mixing a semi-covered public

space with the sports areas and gardens.

Basketball

Coliseum: Third Floor

Urban situation

The solar position and the Aburrá valley winds, linked to the existing planning of the site allows, define

the buildings localization. The north and south façades are open to the let the major winds pass and

the east and west façades have the tribunes and eaves that control the morning and the afternoon

sun. In this way we are inside of a single and perpendicular bioclimatic diagram.

Stripes

We proposed a geometrical roofing system of parallel strips, aligned with the sun path to control it.

These parallel bars act again as technical, spatial and bioclimatic patterns. They can stretch in the

east-west direction, and they can be added or repeated in the north-south direction. They can also

gain height to fit the different sports requirements (basketball, gymnastics, fight and volleyball), or go

down to make a cover from the sun.

Coliseum: West Elevation

Relationship with the mountains, structure and details

These stripes are really a 7 parallel metallic trusses system which geometry changes and relates

directly with the city mountainous or topographic context. A metallic columns system, made by three

assembled columns, supports the roof system and acts as a rain gutters, conducting water to the city

drainage system. With a unique constructive detail, perforated façades, projecting stripes, we are able

to solve, in reiterative ways, bioclimatic, spatial and relational aspects.

Transparency

We proposed sports scenarios that do not require mechanical acclimatization, using the perforated

façades that decrease wind speed. yet allow it to go across the inside of the building. This façades

also allows the people to see the activities inside the building and merge the public exterior life with

the recreational and sportive activities.
