FOUR SHAKESPEARE SONGSIN MADRIGAL STYLE

by Richard D. Russell

PERFORMANCE NOTE The order of these songs may be changed to suit the performers’s sense of Shakespeare!

TAKE, O take those lips away,That so sweetly were forsworn; And those eyes, the break of day,Lights that do mislead the morn! But my kisses bring again,! Bring again;Seals of love, but seal'd in vain,! Seal'd in vain!

TIRED with all these, for restful death I cry,As, to behold desert a beggar born,And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,And purest faith unhappily forsworn,And guilded honour shamefully misplaced,And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,And strength by limping sway disabled,And art made tongue-tied by authority,And folly doctor-like controlling skill,And simple truth miscall'd simplicity,And captive good attending captain ill:! Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,! Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

IF MUSIC be the food of love, play on,Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,The appetite may sicken, and so die.

TELL me where is Fancy bred, Or in the heart or in the head? How begot, how nourishèd? ! Reply, reply. It is engender'd in the eyes, With gazing fed; and Fancy dies In the cradle where it lies. ! Let us all ring Fancy's knell: ! I'll begin it, —Ding, dong, bell.! Ding, dong, bell.
