About the artist

David Mendoza (b. 1979) writes various styles of contemporary music. His works juxtapose the traditionalwith the contemporary, the ancient with the avant-garde, and the accessible with the abstract. Soundsources often include silences, electronic sounds, non-western instruments, and improvisation to producesomething that has been described as ethereal and evocative. Since 2007, his works have been performedat festivals and conferences around the country including SEAMUS, NYCEMF, and SCI local, regional andnational conferences. Recent achievements include performing his work at the Teatro Colón in BuenosAires, Argentina, the premiere of his orchestral work Awakening by the Cleveland Orchestra, and winning histhird ASCAP Plus award. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Florida International University, and iscurrently a Doctoral student at the University of Miami. David is based in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Extended Techniques

Slap tonguing – Violent release of the tongue, creating a “slap” as the vacuum is opened. To create this

effect use a heavy tongue when articulating. A “pop” sound should result. This in indicated by a + over or

below the notehead.

Vibrato Speeds – Player should vary the speed of “jaw vibrato”

Gl issandos – Slow glissando are used and player should take time bending from note to

note

Air Notes - Blowing air into the instrument while fingering pitch. Indicated by x–shaped

noteheads. Inhale and exhale instructions are given.

Sub-tone – A quiet mellow tone

Quarter Tones - Pendereki notation is used. See chart below. Fingering is given in score.

Although tempo is important, the performer should take their time playing this piece. The performer should never feel rushed. If sub-tone cannot be played, the vibrato variation should be played in measures 6-7 and 32-33.
