PAPERBOARD PACKAGING
Brands rely on packaging to represent their products within their market and represent the quality and desirability of their
products when displayed on store shelves. Since the package is typically the first interac=on a consumer has with a product or brand, packaging must be on-‐brand, func=onal, and beau=fully designed. The package is responsible for crea=ng a posi=ve and memorable customer experience. When it comes to the behind-‐the-‐scenes, the manufacturing of the package must be efficient and cost-‐effec=ve, and brands heavily rely on the exper=se of
packaging companies to provide what they need and to have the service and technology to facilitate this process.
With this in mind, there are always trends affec3ng the
industry and here are four BIG ones.

Paper and board packaging is the largest segment of the packaging industry. Smithers Pira projects it will be worth about $250 billion
globally in 2016, with the U.S. accoun=ng for beNer than one-‐quarter of the total volume. Smithers Pira reports that global folding carton produc=on has grown by about 2.5 percent each year since 2005,
and it expects this trend to con3nue.

Companies are becoming more crea=ve and looking to preserve
their brand in new ways. Because of shelf space and cost,
the Paperboard Packaging Council reports that there are new opportuni=es for carton packaging in the confec=onery and beauty industries. Although rigid boxes are s=ll associated with some luxury brands, there are plenty of brands looking at carton as rigid box alterna=ves.

It’s no longer just about the end product.
While the end product is s=ll
paramount, the process needs to become more consulta=ve because customers want and expect more. To stay compe==ve, companies must focus on the en=re process – from
concept to delivery – and ensure that service is way beyond just delivering
the end product.

Technology affects almost every aspect of how we do business – and packaging
is no excep=on.
New technologies are allowing companies to expand their product offerings, save energy, and produce
less waste – all boNom line considera=ons. These advantages will pass through to the company in the
forms of more compe==ve pricing and new design and material op=ons.
