• Founded in 1961 as the Local Centre of the Chartered Institute of Bankers
• In 1979 started organising courses leading to recognised qualifications locally within the Banking Sector – Pioneer in VET
• In 1988 granted Licence from the Ministry of Education to run a Banking School locally
Historical Developments
• In 1989 started the first vocational course within Malta’s education system leading to the Certificate in Banking which was delivered at the then Paolino Vassallo Upper Lyceum – Pioneer in VET
• In 1990 changed the name to Institute of Financial Services
• 1996 the Certificate was approved by the University of Malta Senate to be an entry into University

The Institute Today
•IFS Malta is an independent Institute however has close relationship with the IFS School of Finance in the UK
•Locally the Institute is run by a committee made up of practitioners in the field of financial services
•IFS Malta runs the Institute’s education programme locally. This ranges from Degree to Diploma and Certificate courses
•IFS Malta adds local content to tailor-make the qualification ready for our needs.
Vocational Qualifications
•BSc (Hons) Financial Services – University of Manchester•Foundation Degree – to be introduced•Diploma in Banking and Financial Services – requirement for entry into degree programme•Certificate programmes according to industry needs
Relationship with MCAST
•This dates back to 1989 when the Certificate course was offered for the first time at Paolino Vassallo
•Today the IFS Diploma is a stand-alone programme and qualification offered by the Institute of Business and Commerce at MCAST

•Entry into the Manchester degree programme
•Entry into the B Com degree programme at the UoM
The Future
•Increase the awareness of financial literacy in Malta.
•The IFS School of Finance has introduced in the UK a schools’ programme ranging from a Foundation Certificate in Personal Finance to a Diploma in Financial Studies.
