    All Saints (Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12a)

    Capuchin Franciscan Sacred Heart Sisters

    Today

    The earliest certain

    observance of a

    feast in honor of all

    the saints is an early

    fourth-century com-

    memoration of "all

    the martyrs." In the

    early seventh centu-

    ry, after successive

    waves of invaders plundered the

    catacombs, Pope Boniface IV

    gathered up some 28 wagonloads

of bones and reinterred them be-

    neath the Pantheon, a Roman

temple dedicated to all the gods.

    The pope rededicated the shrine

    as a Christian church. According

to St. Bede the Venerable, the

    pope intended "that the memory

of all the saints might in the fu-

ture be honored in the place

    which had formerly been dedi-

cated to the worship not of gods

but of demons" (On the Calcula-

    tion of Time).

    But the rededication

    of the Pantheon,

    like the earlier com-

    memoration of all

    the martyrs, oc-

    curred in May.

    Many Eastern

    Churches still honor

all the saints in the spring, either

during the Easter season or im-

    mediately after Pentecost.

    How the Western Church came

to celebrate this feast, now rec-

ognized as a solemnity, in No-

vember is a puzzle to historians.

    The Anglo-Saxon theologian

Alcuin observed the feast on No-

vember 1 in 800, as did his friend

    Arno, Bishop of Salzburg. Rome

finally adopted that date in the

    ninth century.

    WE GIVE THANKS!

Thanking Marie Tevis for her years

of service to the Old Mission Santa

    Ines and our community.

    The Hospitality and Caring Ministry

of OMSI would like to honor “Marie

Tevis” for the years she has devoted

to the “Meals on Wheels Program.”

Marie has been the delivery coordina-

tor for volunteer drivers for over 40

    years. Through illness, tragedy, and

many of life’s ups and downs, she has

    faithfully scheduled drivers. Many of

our own parishioners have been regu-

    lar drivers (Angels on Wheels).

All of us at the Old Mission and the

    members of the Hospitality Ministry

wish Marie blessings and extend our

sincere gratitude for a “job well

done”. Marie is a ‘Good and Faithful

    Servant’. Parishioners are invited to

join us in our special celebration at

    our next meeting on Wednesday,

November 4, 9:00 AM, in the lower

    conference room.

    IX.
