What is Islam? Islam means: “submission to the will of God.”

Who was Muhammad?
Born 570 C.E. in Mecca (a great trading city)
Came for a poor family
Became a skilled trader and manager
The Qur’an Muslims accept the Qur’an as the word of God
Cannot be changed
Includes commandments and parables
Religious beliefs, religious duties, and good works are important elements of Islam
Other literature: hadith based on what Muhammad said and did
Shows Muslims how a Muslim should live and behave
Sharia Islamic law
Five Pillars Pillars of faith: duties that a Muslim must
follow
First- a person openly declare his or her faith
Second- Muslims pray often to Allah (custom is 5 times a day)
Third- charity
Fourth- fasting (during daylight hours during month of Ramadan)
Fifth- pilgrimage to Mecca hadj at least once
Muslims consider the five pillars important for the soul, but also serve other purposes
