NAMING OF THE HANK AND LAUREL GREER COLORECTAL CANCER PROGRAMThe Roper St. Francis Foundation is excited to announce the new Hank and Laurel Greer
Colorectal Cancer Program at Roper St. Francis Cancer Care. Hank and Laurel Greer’s generous
$250,000 investment in the Creating More Tomorrows Campaign will enable us to substantially
grow our internationally-recognized colorectal cancer program.
“This gift is very meaningful to us because my mother
passed away from colon cancer,” said Hank. “Laurel
and I want to increase awareness and provide education
on the importance of getting screened because colon
cancer can touch someone at any age. We are excited to
be partnering with Roper St. Francis Cancer Care to
expand their colorectal cancer program so perhaps no
one else will have to lose a loved one.”
Excluding skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among men and
women. However, with early detection, colorectal cancer can often be prevented by appropriate
screening.
The Hank and Laurel Greer Colorectal Cancer Program will focus on improving colorectal
cancer screening in the Tri-county area and offering state-of-the-art treatment to patients
afflicted with colorectal cancer. The program will bring together all of the specialists involved
in a patient’s care to develop a customized treatment plan for each patient’s individual needs. In
addition, their gift will enhance wellness opportunities for colorectal cancer survivors.
“By supporting our colorectal cancer program that is focused on screening and early detection,
Hank and Laurel’s gift will save lives in our community. For that, all of us at Roper St Francis
are grateful for their vision and their generosity,” said Dr. Steve Akman, Medical Director of
Roper St. Francis Cancer Care.
It is only through the support of the Greers and our community that we are able to continue
to be a leader in cancer care in the Lowcountry. To learn more about the Creating More
Tomorrows Campaign visit www.rsfhfoundation.org or call (843) 720-1205.

welcome the members of the 2016 Fellows

“As a member of the 2015 Fellows class, I
enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look at
the hospital and learning about the valuable
role philanthropy plays in allowing Roper St. Francis to provide exceptional
care to our community. I am honored to return as Chair of the 2016 class and
look forward to working with the dedicated Foundation team to help educate

A GIVING SPIRIT While witnessing her own mother
progressively become wheelchair bound and
then bedridden, Walker Buxton learned the
importance of treating both the patient and
their caregivers with respect.
“My stepdad set an incredible example
of this for me. He felt strongly that if an
individual is valued and treated with dignity,
it actually improves and promotes a better
quality of life for them,” said Walker.
After her experience with her mother, Walker knew she wanted to apply what she had learned
and help others. “I needed to find a purpose and volunteering at the Center for Spinal Cord Injury
allows me to express my belief of care with dignity,” said Walker.
“On the days I volunteer, I hope I can just touch one person with a smile, a hug, an offer of
assistance, an ear to listen to, a laugh and even a cry,” said Walker. “Every minute of my time at the
Center for Spinal Cord Injury has enriched me as a person. I am truly blessed with my new family,
which consists of my patients, their families and support systems and the absolutely incredible
team led by Dr. David Powell and Lori Wattay. They have given me a gift greater than they will ever
know and for that I am truly blessed.”
Since 2011, through the generosity of our community, the Center for Spinal Cord Injury has been
able to serve more than 678 men and women with debilitating injuries throughout the state of
South Carolina. In 2015 alone, 209 patients were given life-changing moments through the clinic
which now offers services twice a month due to the demand from patients across the state.
“Walker is a godsend at the Center for Spinal Cord Injury volunteering twice a month,” said
Lori Wattay, Center for Spinal Cord Injury Coordinator. “She infuses her vibrant personality
into the patients, caregivers and staff with a compassionate caring heart evident in every
task she addresses. We are grateful for all of our volunteers such as Walker, who are essential to
helping us offer the best chance of recovery for every patient, every time.”

STAFF HIGHLIGHT: LINDSAY TAYLOR Job title: Director of Major Gifts
How long I’ve been at the Roper St. Francis Foundation: 6 years
What I like most about my job: Getting to know our amazing donors! It is an honor to be able to
help our donors – many of whom have powerful stories as grateful patients and families – connect
their generosity with the needs of our doctors and teammates.
I’m originally from: Kettering, Ohio, although I’ve lived in
Charleston since I was 14 so it feels like home to me.
My hobbies include: When we’re not catching up with family
and friends, my husband Zak and I are enjoying our first year of
marriage and spending time in our new home.
Best thing about living in Charleston: So many things, but I
especially love driving over water every morning on my way to work!
U.S. ASTRONAUT TO HEADLINE RX SOCIETY DONOR APPRECIATION GALAThe Roper St. Francis Foundation is excited to announce that Captain Scott
Kelly, U.S. Astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain, will be the featured speaker
at our upcoming Donor Appreciation Gala on February 4, 2017.
An astronaut since 1996, Kelly’s achievements over his illustrious 20-year career
with NASA earned him the coveted position as America’s first year-round
astronaut. His historic mission also included NASA’s groundbreaking Twins
Study, where Kelly’s identical twin brother, retired NASA astronaut Captain
Mark Kelly served on the ground as a control model in an unprecedented
experiment to understand how space affects the human body. Prior to his career
with NASA, Kelly served 25 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as an experienced
aviator and decorated Captain.
“We are excited to have astronaut Captain Scott Kelly join us for the 2016 Gala,” said Kathy
Thomas, Chair of the Gala Committee. “It promises to be an out of this world experience. It has
been an honor to serve as chair of the Gala Committee. I get to work with an incredibly creative
group of women who find new and innovative ways to thank the donors who give so much to
Roper St. Francis.”
