MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

It is both pleasur and a privilege to welcome new comers, in this remarkable institution. New faces that we don’t know till now but would wish to know. The same new faces that, over a short period of time, will no more be, ‘NEW’ faces.

Well, once again I welcome all of you on behalf of whole faculty and administration. Just a few lines of how we all feel at this juncture. Here I go.

Azad Jammu & Kashmir Medical College (AJKMC) has adopted a latest teaching methodology which is being recommended by Medical Education Regulatory Authority and Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. The Integrated Curriculum is becoming an increasingly popular concept internationally. The goal of integration is to break down barriers between the basic, pre-clinical and clinical sciences currently in place as a result of traditional curricular structures. Integration should promote retention of knowledge and acquisition of skills through repetitive and progressive development of concepts and their applications. We suggest three areas in need of improvement and clarification for successful integration: ensuring synchronous presentation of material, avoiding the tendency to diminish the importance of the basic sciences, and using unified definitions. This is integrated system for medical graduate training in which basic medical sciences has been integrated with Clinical Sciences right from beginning (1st Year MBBS). I would like to advise all of you to follow rules & regulations of this institute positively as first and foremost point is to keep in your mind i.e 80% attendance is mandatory to appear in all professional university examinations including Modular, Block Assessment & Clinical rotations. Be moderate, we are all Muslims, keep focus on your education and abstain to participate in political activities. Newness or novelty has been intriguing and fascinating to man since its inception. Novelty for us is excitement and exuberance, surprise and science, cheerfulness and joy, hope and happiness, boldness and buoyancy, positive-ness and passion.

What I wish to express using all the ‘adjectives’ that I used is that these new faces in here, our newcomers, represent to us the same hope and challenge as new players in a cricket team or new twists in a good story. And we, as seniors, should ideally be the matured bunch, a bunch of guys and girls they could trust and depend upon.

Together, we can make a terrific team. So, I, on behalf of all the ‘old’ faces here, welcome the new faces with open hands, open minds and above all, OPEN HEARTS!

Caution Ragging is strongly prohibited in AJK Medical College and there is zero tolerance for such kind of activities. Strict disciplinary action would be taken against any student involved in such activity.

Eighty percent (80%) is mandatory attendance to appear in Modular / Professional / University Examination as per Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) regulations. Take every care about your attendance so that it does not fall below the minimum required to be eligible to sit in the examination. Your Internal Assessment is a continuous process. Your progress is recorded permanently. Besides your academic records, disciplinary, behavioral and co-curricular record will also be maintained and awarded accordingly. Take care to make high records as they are made for once and for ever!

Rationale AJK Medical College is the first public sector medical institution

in Pakistan which has adopted integrated undergraduate medical curriculum, right from its inception. Integrated medical curriculum is based on philosophy of holistic patient care, integrated health care teams and active learning principals. Considering the diverse background of the new first year medical students coming from each nook and corner of Pakistan as well as from aboard; the orientation to new systems is mandatory. Most of the fresh students coming from traditional teaching system need to adapt quickly from passive to active learning system.

Foundation module would provide a road map to the teaching & learning strategies, assessment practices and professional behaviors to be adopted in a medical college. During Foundation Module you will be introduced to the AJK Medical College, Faculty, college facilities and Allied teaching hospitals. Moreover, the introduction to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), inter personal Communication skills, Medical terminology, contemporary bio-medical ethics, history of medicine, professionalism and community interaction will be integral components of this module. The Foundation Module will also sensitize the students regarding the importance of medical education in the light of Qur’an and Sunna.

Outcomes of Module Foundation module would provide a road map to students and faculty regarding implementation assessment and evaluation of five year integrated curriculum of AJK Medical College Muzaffarabad. By the end of this module, students of class of 2020 should be fully conversant with the Academic calendar, teaching and learning strategies, role of ICT in medical education, assessment practices at AJKMC and desirable professional behavior.

Task Seharish Khan, a 20-year-old FSc student, resident of Islamabad is planning to appear in premedical entry test in Muzaffarabad. Exam is supposed to be held at 10:00 AM in AJK Medical College on 20th November, 2016. She left Islamabad at 5:00 AM along with her elder brother to reach Muzaffarabad. On her way in Murree the road was blocked due to heavy rains, and Abbottabad road is also blocked due to land sliding. How is she going to reach Muzaffarabad in time for her Examination?
