There are everyday heroes in our commu- nity that have an enormous impact. Not for recognition or praise, but because they have decided in their heart it’s what they want to do. Rose Guepfer was one of those quiet heroes. Decades ago, Sacred Heart Hospital had a Sewing Room in the basement. Rose worked there as one of the seamstresses for 31 years – mending sheets, gowns and other linens. Deaf since birth, she was born in Plum City, Wisconsin and attended Eau Claire’s school for the deaf. Rose prided herself on using her sewing skills to make a living and be self-sufficient. She seemed to be happy all the time, and contributed this to “being able to support her own life.” Chris Tandberg, housekeeping team leader, worked with Rose for more than 10 years, and saw the joy she took in her work. “She could make that sewing machine fly,” Chris recalls fondly. Rose considered the Hospital “her home” and came back to visit often after she retired at age 86. Rose worked at Sacred Heart Hospital from 1958 to 1988. Her co-workers knew well of her frugality. She lived in a one- story home on the East Hill and took the bus to work each day. Instead of a refrigerator she used a cold room in the basement to store food. The other seamstresses offer to buy her a refrigerator, but she declined. In 1992, Rose surprised everyone by making a very generous gift to the hospital she loved, giving $20,000 so that the hospital could buy the first set of automatically opening doors for the Main Entrance. Rose felt a loyalty to Sacred Heart, and at some point during her employment she reached a quiet decision: Sacred Heart would receive all of her money once she died. When she died in 1997 Rose donated $150,000 to the hospital – one of the largest donations from an individual that Sacred Heart ever received. That money was used to build the Healing Place Endowment, the earnings of which continue to provide services to those who come to Sacred Heart in grief. Rose left a legacy of pride, joy and blessing to those who come after her. “The hospital was her life.” Tandberg said. There are everyday heroes in our commu-nity that have an enormous impact.

She seemed to be happy all the time, and contributed this to “being able to support her own life.”

Chris Tandberg, housekeeping team leader, worked with Rose for more than 10 years, and saw the joy she took in her work.

All of us at Sacred Heart are grateful to have someone as amazing as Rose pass through our doors.

Donations of all kinds make such a huge difference in providing the best healing ministry possible. We would like to thank all of the quiet heroes in our community that are making a difference each and every day!

From his home in Florida, Bob Bauer fondly remembered his sister’s

passion for helping others.

“This was her whole life,” he said of Annabel Bauer. “She was a single

woman who dedicated herself to everything she loved.”

Annabel earned a degree in nursing at the College of St. Scholastica in

1956 and traversed the globe – constantly making the world better than

she found it. She died in 2014 surrounded by family. The Mondovi native

was friends with the Sisters at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, and asked

that a portion of her life earnings be donated to the hospital to help

colleagues get the education they want and need.

Bob and his two siblings agreed that $100,000 would be given to

HSHS Sacred Heart Foundation to fund the Annabel Bauer Surgical

Nurse Education Endowment. To carry on her legacy, the endowment

will award an annual scholarship to further a colleague’s education in

surgical nursing.

Annabel had many interests, but her love of adventure took her to

war-torn Vietnam before coming back to the Eau Claire area. She

joined the service and utilized her nursing skills to supervise a major

hospital on the front line of the war. She saw the most severe casualties,

and then re-enlisted for a second term. “She said, ‘The need is so great.

I have to go back,’” Bob recalled.

After her service with the armed forces, she came back to the area and

served as the Dean of Health Occupations at Chippewa Valley Technical

College. During this time, she connected with Monsignor Edmund

Klimek and the Sisters of HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. “She felt very

close to Father Klimek,” Bob said. “He was very dear to her.”

Annabel also recognized that hospital colleagues never cease to learn.

“When you think of all of the changes in medical care today – it’s

difficult for nurses to stay on top of that,” Bob said. “Our parents gave

us the education we wanted and it led to successful careers. It’s best

to pass that on in a charitable way.”

Donor dollars have a direct impact on the high quality healthcare we

provide. From continuing education to updated equipment, you are

insuring the best care available in the Chippewa Valley!

Like Annabel, you may have thought about

making a gift to HSHS Sacred Heart Foundation

through your estate plans. Gifts such as these

provide for the Sisters’ ministry for decades to

come, without jeopardizing your current or

future financial resources. If you are interested in

receiving more information, contact Ann Kaiser

at 715.717.3996 or [email protected].

When a sudden and serious illness or injury happens, you want the very best emergency care available as fast as you can get it. Our highly skilled Emergency Department team uses some of the best technology in the business to provide excellent care. Recently, we redesigned and expanded our emergency and trauma center which allows us to offer an even higher level of patient care, thanks to generous gifts from donors like you!

Included in the remodeled space is a significant redesign of patient registration, waiting, triage and treatment rooms to meet the growing needs of patients and to provide for better privacy. Four additional patient rooms have been added and the waiting areas for the Emergency Department and Urgent Care are separated to further improve privacy and enhance the patient experience. The waiting areas also now offer free Wi-Fi charging stations for personal devices.

This project represented a $2.4 million investment in quality patient care, 40% of which was donated by our generous donors! The center was opened to treat patients on March 10, 2016 following a donor and community open house, blessing and ribbon cutting. We are grateful for the generosity of our donors, whose gifts allow Sacred Heart Hospital to continue enhancing patient care, positively impacting lives all over our community!
