Foundation House Times November 2019

In honor of our trip to the Seattle Times printing facility in Bothell this month, I thought it might be inter-esting to look to the media to reveal perspective around Russian immigration to the United States of Ameri-ca. Newspapers serve to inform, but also to reflect back to us the ideas and atmosphere of local culture and people. The political history between Russia and the United States throughout the 20th century has been chilly to say the least—World Wars I and II, the red scares and “McCarthyism”, and the Cold War. Newspa-pers played a huge role in disseminating fear and distrust towards Russian people, impacting the lives of Rus-sian immigrants living and working in the United States. Recent investigation of Russian tampering in the 2016 presidential election has again affected the self-identity of many Russian immigrants today.

These excerpts are pulled from an article featured in The Washington Post on October 20, 2017 called “‘I am American right now’: Russian immigrants split over rising hostilities with their native country”.

What a glorious fall we have had! I secretly rode on the van trip and enjoyed the foliage colors. When we returned I realized that all that glory was around us here too.

The leaves have fallen and winter is impending. What a great prospect for reading time. I, Anony, will fill my folder with information about new books to explore. Re-member the Amendment I of our Bill of Rights says there is “no abridging of the freedom of speech or of the press.”

Remember to vote by November 5th!

Dima Malanitchev, 54 An Emmy-winning art director for “The Simpsons,” Mala-nitchev immigrated from Moscow in 1994 for a work op-portunity.

“When Barack Obama was elected and I cast my vote, I didn’t consider myself as a Russian-American. That was an American thing for me, and I was really proud of that. . . . Now, with the results of the last election, it pushes you back to your origins. It made me pull back from the gov-ernment and establishment be-cause I have nothing in common with the way those people see the world or think.”

Raisa Aguf A Russian Jew, Aguf escaped persecution in Latvia and came to America in 1980.

“I watch Russian TV from Moscow, but I don’t know what’s right, what’s wrong. I love America very much — I am Ameri-can right now, I am not Russian. I re-member my culture, but I like America. [Russia] blames America for every-thing. The Ameri-cans, the actual peo-ple, have nothing to do with Russia.”

MEET THE NEW RESIDENT: FRIEDA K.

Written by: Frieda K.

Who Am I? I guess that’s what I’m here to find out living among you all. This is perhaps the greatest challenge of my life as I think it may be or may have been for many of you. Currently I liken it to moving into the dorm my fresh-man year in college. All is new; nothing is as expected. Why do I find this time more challenging than then? I think because my reserves are less and dwin-dling as the days go by. And the biggest one of all - I can’t go home if things don’t work out. There’s no home any more. In the early days I can’t say there was ever a time when I made use of that op-tion but there was just something bracing about the fact that it was there. So I go through the days here, glad I found this place with such a variety of caring people. HELLO! A bit about myself - I’m a member of the Klamath tribe in Oregon. I came to Seattle for the ‘62 World’s Fair and stayed in Washington. Professionally, I am an edu-cator: teacher, principal, student teacher supervisor, Head Start program director, Seattle Public Schools Indian Heritage Pro-gram Director K-12. I lived and studied in Paris, France for a year. I came home with an M. A. from the Sorbonne in French Lan-guage and Civilization. It was a pivotal year in my life. My first paid position was as a deputy sheriff, my “funnest” two years was as a professional actor touring with Red Earth Performing Arts, a Native American theater group. My husband of 23 years had his degree in theater arts and sang locally with the Seattle Opera Chorus. Our son lives in North Dakota; our daughter lives here in Seattle. They are glad I am in a place where people will watch out for me. Frieda K., Singer, Story Teller, Fledgling Poet. Looking forward to sunny days ahead. Welcome to Foundation House at Northgate, Frieda!
