Foundation Funding Guide Guide to Foundation Funding Sources for the Top 20 States

Introduction

This guide provides detailed information on foundations that provide grants for program development in primary/secondary schools. These foundations include local community foundations, regionally focused family foundations, and corporate foundations. There are approximately 70,000 foundations in the US with over $300 billion in assets. Foundations are a good source of funding as they distribute in excess of $14B in grants each year.

Types of Foundations

Private Foundations: Non-profit organizations with an endowment usually donated from a single source, such as an individual or family. Best known examples include Rockefeller Foundation, Gates Foundation, and the Doris Duke Foundation, but there are many smaller foundations. There are over 20,000 foundations in the US with over $300 billion in assets and they will be distributing $14 billion in funds this year. Corporate Foundations: Many corporations such as AT&T, Bank of America, Barnes & Noble, NEC, etc. provide grants from their corporate foundations. Corporations have widely varying corporate philanthropy programs and they can be a great source of funding for educational purposes. Community Foundations: Community foundations are 501(c)(3) organizations that make grants for charitable purposes in a specific community or region. These foundations accept donations from a wide group of contributors and are an excellent source of funding for small community-based projects. Examples include the Boston Foundation, Maine Community Foundation, etc. Just about every state and major city has several community foundations.

Successful Foundation Grant Strategies

Foundation Research: Before you prepare and submit a grant proposal, research the foundations that you are targeting to make sure that your project is in an area they are interested in funding. Additionally, many foundations limit their grant making to certain geographical locations, so you’ll need to make sure that your organization is located in a region that they support. Application Guidelines: Most foundations have an application process and specify deadlines that must be met to successfully obtain a grant. First check their Web site, if they have one, for guidelines on the application process. Some foundations request a letter of inquiry before the submission of a proposal. Many foundations request that you use the Common Grant Proposal Form from the Associated Grant Makers http://www.agmconnect.org when submitting a grant proposal. You can copy and paste a copy of the form into your word processing program from the link below. http://www.agmconnect.org/agmwebmanager.nsf/hf/AGM-Serv-CPFtext
