We have a favorite quote that we like to include in our materials to donors. I think its appeal is that it invites the reader to dream and think big – without limits. And then encourages one to go make it happen.

“If you have built castles in the air,your work need not be lost;

that is where they should be.Now put the foundations

under them.” - Henry David Thoreau

There is something wonderfully freeing about having permission to think big without worrying about whether it is logical. There is also something energizing about working to make a dream become reality. After all, as we look back through our almost century-long

history at Orlando Health, many of our greatest achievements began with someone asking, “What if?”

This question led to the building of Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, bringing a new level of pediatric care to Central Florida. It also led to the creation of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – one of the first in the country and today, one of the largest and most successful. And it is garnering worldwide recognition for many of our programs including orthopedics, oncology, cardiology and acute care including trauma services.

Yet, to successfully attain these lofty goals, each one of these achievements began with a strong foundation. After all, without it, the very things that stand upon them – whether dreams, buildings or relationships – crumble with the passage of time. However, when foundations are solid, what rises up can reach far beyond the original vision.

In this spring issue, we once again celebrate the annual tradition of the Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard®. Our friendship with Arnold Palmer began in the 1980s and has only continued to deepen and grow. Many of Mr. Palmer’s friends and business partners have joined him in supporting our work at Arnold Palmer Medical Center. And we are honored to have his daughter, Amy Saunders, actively serving on two of our Foundation boards.

Last April, we welcomed Health Central to Orlando Health’s family of hospitals. It is my pleasure to share with you the expansion of this relationship with the

introduction of our new Southwest Community Board, comprised of some old friends and many new. All bring note-worthy abilities and experience. Their charge is to expand the circle of friends and supporters, with the long-range objective of philanthropically supporting new programs and facilities.

We also welcomed our newest corporate donor, Land Rover Orlando, proud member of Fields Automotive Group, as presenting sponsor of our upcoming Tiny Baby Ball gala in September.

These are the friendships for which we are so thankful. And there are so many more that grace the pages of this issue: CMAA (17th annual golf tournament) and PNC Bank, whose annual golf tournaments have collectively raised $500,000, the Mall at Millenia’s extensive partnership, the Women’s Advisory Council at South Seminole Hospital….Our future rests on a foundation of investing in relationships, wisely stewarding our resources and solidly planning for tomorrow.

I’ll leave you with another quote….“Dream big. Pray Hard. Think Long.” For those of you who are familiar with Mark Batterson’s book, The Circle Maker, you know this well.

Sincerely,

19

Tim and Tracey Sullivan1918 Society members

Introducing 1918 Society Members, tim and tracey Sullivan Why did you choose to give through the 1918 Society?

We joined the 1918 Society because Orlando Health serves every segment of our community with medical excellence. We are happy to be able to support Orlando Health’s efforts to care for others in their time of need.

Why do you believe it is important to support MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando?

Thousands of patients each year trust their lives to the medical and support staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando and receive the very best in medical and personal care. With many research-based programs open to patients, they can benefit from some of the very latest treatment protocols right here in Orlando. We personally know of the world-class medical programs and care as Tracey recently completed five years of treatment and monitoring for head and neck cancer and three for breast cancer.

What does being a member of the 1918 Society mean to you?

Being a member of the 1918 Society means that we are able to support Orlando Health’s efforts to care for everyone in our community. We believe it is important to help ensure that Orlando Health has the necessary resources to do so.

In keeping with the Orlando Health Foundation’s commitment to provide philanthropic funds in support of Orlando Health’s mission, a Southwest Community Board was recently created to address the unique needs of Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Health Central Hospital. As Orlando Health transitions to a clinically-integrated, Patient-First model of care, investment in leading-edge technologies as well as facilities to support expanded outpatient services will be vital. The new Southwest Community Board is comprised of business and community leaders who live and work within these communities and will be able to represent them well.

Introducing Ken Smith, ChairOrlando Health Foundation – Southwest Community Board

Ken has served on the Foundation’s board of directors for 12 years in addition to its Executive Committee, Finance Committee and ONE NIGHTSM Committee. Ken and his wife, Trish, are members of the Foundation’s honorary donor societies, the Heritage Circle and the 1918 Society. Ken also serves on the SunTrust Bank Community Advisory Board and atttends Harvest Bible Chapel.

“Having served on the Orlando Health Foundation board of directors for many years, I believe strongly in Orlando Health’s mission and the medical excellence with which it cares for our community. I am excited to

share with residents in southwest Orlando how Health Central Hospital and Dr. P. Phillips Hospital are bringing this high level of care close to home – and that philanthropic support is vital to continued development of programs and services. Our new board is comprised of dedicated volunteers who possess the philanthropic vision required to have a long-range impact on the southwest community. I look forward to working with each of them as we realize the vision for these hospitals.”

Introducing Bill Perry, Vice ChairOrlando Health Foundation – Southwest Community Board

Bill Perry is the retired executive director and founder with his wife,

Cynthia, of the Quality Assurance Institute, an international association of over 1,000 large corporations dedicated to improving quality within the information technology sector. Bill was a member of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners and is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Quality Analyst.

Bill and Cindy have been major supporters of Orlando Health for nearly 25 years. They served as co-chairs of the Hospitality House Community Advisory Committee and led the campaign to build the Cynthia C. & William E. Perry Pavilion. Their generous support also helped to build the Perry Chapel at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and the Cynthia C. & William E. Perry Chapel at MD Anderson – Orlando. Cindy has also been a member of the Orlando Health Foundation board since 1994 and both are members of the Orlando Health Foundation’s honorary donor societies, the Heritage Circle and the 1918 Society.

More than 400 of the community’s most influential women were on hand at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies to celebrate women and join the conversation about the vision for the future of women’s healthcare.

“Women are the heart of families throughout this community and, more than ever, women are making healthcare decisions for themselves and others they care for,” says Kathy Swanson, president of Winnie Palmer Hospital. “Our event tonight is a starting point for the conversations that will continue to advance us into a healthcare future that is about women, for women.”

The event featured a formal introduction to AccordingtoWinnie.com, a recently launched online community, which includes a healthcare management tool, customizable e-newsletter, and physician blogs where live communication between women and physicians can continue to grow.

The evening’s event coincided with the ninth anniversary of the groundbreaking for Winnie Palmer Hospital. Special guests included Amy Saunders, daughter of golf legend, Arnold Palmer, and his late wife, Winnie.

“It is an honor to be here tonight to share this vision with so many women in our community. My family is humbled by the miracles made possible every day

by the people who represent these wonderful facilities,” says Amy. “This event and this new vision for women’s health ensure that my father’s and mother’s legacy of helping others continues to grow in this community.”

The event concluded with guests symbolically releasing lanterns containing a personal health wish onto the pond next to the Kobrin Family Terrace outside Winnie Palmer Hospital.

We would like to thank event donors including our Presenting Sponsor, SunTrust, Catering Partner AVI Food Systems along with Freeman, KTH Architects and The Mall at Millenia for helping make the event possible.

In September 2013 Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation will host the Tiny Baby Ball in support of the Alexander Center for Neonatology at Winnie Palmer Hospital. This past December, Tiny Baby Ball presenting sponsor, Land Rover Orlando, proud member of Fields Auto Group, held an evening reception to kick off and promote this new event.

The evening was a festive social, which included delicious food and beverages courtesy of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Winter Park. Within the beautiful Land Rover showroom, Sean Roberts, father of two Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) patients and Tiny Baby Ball Committee member, shared with guests how life-saving work is happening each day in the NICU.

The NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital provides the highest level of care for more than 1,600 premature babies each year. At 112 beds, the Alexander Center for Neonatology is one of the largest NICUs in the country and one of the busiest, and one of the only NICUs in Central Florida to offer technologically advanced care such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

5K Run and Kids’ Fun Run Raises Awareness for Children’s Health, Education, and Safety.

On January 19, a record breaking 2,170 runners and walkers gathered at Universal Orlando® Resort for the 32nd Annual Dick Batchelor Run for the Children.

The 5K (3.1 mile) race benefits The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families and raises awareness for children’s health, education, and safety. This year, the event raised more than $22,000 in online donations alone.

“For many years, this race has helped The Howard Phillips Center prevent and treat child abuse, provide services for kids with disabilities and much more,” states Dick Batchelor. “It’s become

a fun and unique way for everyone to have a real impact on the lives of children throughout the community.”

The Dick Batchelor Run is The Howard Phillips Center’s largest fundraising event. In its 32-year history, the race has generated more than $1 million for the six core programs housed within the center: the Developmental Center for Infants & Children/Early Steps, Healthy Families Orange, the Orange County Children’s Advocacy Center, the Child Protection Team, the Healing Tree, and Teen Xpress. From 2011-2012, The Howard Phillips Center provided medical and therapeutic treatment to more than 13,000 children and their caretakers.

On Friday, October 12, 2012, Orlando Health Foundation celebrated the growth of The Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Arnold Palmer Hospital. One year ago, the Center opened the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program, and in recent months, the team added a sixth physician.

To commemorate all that has been achieved, philanthropic supporters of the Center and their friends were invited for a tour of the Center. An evening celebration followed at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge for supporters, friends, physicians and grateful patients to highlight the progress of the unit, the ability to serve more pediatric patients and the tremendous impact that philanthropy has made in the healing environment and quality of services delivered to our children and families affected by cancer.

South Seminole Hospital Women’s Advisory Council hosts fashion show to benefit Breast Care Program

More than 300 guests gathered at the Longwood home of Bob and Diane Dello Russo for an evening fashion show celebrating Pink October. The event also honored one very special breast cancer survivor, Elizabeth Gaussart, who joyfully “walked the runway” in an outfit from fashion partner, SteinMart.

The event raised $35,000, which enabled the purchase of a new neoprobe for the Breast Care Program at South Seminole Hospital. This new technology will greatly improve patient care for women undergoing radiation/breast surgery in Seminole County.

“The Women’s Advisory Council has a long history of strong advocacy and support for women’s services at South Seminole Hospital. We value their dedication, vision and energy and I am so excited to work with them in expanding the scope of this program,” says Karen Frenier, who was recently promoted to president of South Seminole Hospital.1. Congress Reinstates Charitable IRa Giving option

Janet Morrow Vice President Planned [email protected]

Matt LillyDirector Planned [email protected]

Congress recently passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 to prevent the U.S. from going over the “fiscal cliff”. One part of the law permits individuals over age 70½ to make tax-free charitable gifts from traditional or Roth IRAs, up to a maximum amount of $100,000. The legislation allows many individuals to tap into their best resource for giving - an IRA.

“Charitable IRA gifts are an excellent way to give,” says Janet Morrow, vice president, Orlando Health Foundation. “By giving through a charitable IRA gift, you can make a significant difference in the lives of our patients and families, while at the same time receiving considerable tax savings.”

Charitable IRA gifts can also replace required minimum distributions, reducing taxable income for 2013. Donors save taxes by reducing the amount of income subject to income tax even though no charitable deduction is available.

Making a charitable IRA gift is a simple way to generously support Orlando Health Foundation. To make an IRA gift,

contact the custodian or trustee of your account as well as the Planned Giving office to ensure proper transfer and receipting of your contribution.

For a free brochure about IRA gifts, please visit our website at www.orlandohealth.com/plannedgiving.

orlando Health’s Nursing alumni ReunionWith great pride and dedication to service, graduates and instructors from Orlando Regional Medical Center’s former nursing school return each year for an alumni reunion. The special weekend brings together nurses from the many graduating classes of the School of Nursing that operated at ORMC from 1921 – 1973.

As graduates of our former nursing school, these individuals are an extension of our family and an important part of our history. Their dedication, training and service laid the groundwork for the excellence in nursing for which Orlando Health is well known.

CoRPoRate PaRtNeR SPotlIGHtIn 2004, Orlando Health Foundation began searching for a premiere location for a new event to benefit Orlando Health’s Level One Trauma Center. The location needed to be unique, as well as have the ability to convey the critical message of trauma care on a variety of platforms. The Mall at Millenia fit the description perfectly and the first ONE NIGHTSM to Celebrate Excellence in Trauma Care event took place in April 2006 with a sold out attendance of 600 guests. What started out as an event venue nearly eight years ago has turned into a true multi-level partnership benefiting many programs and facilities within the Orlando Health family of hospitals.

“The Mall at Millenia is proud to be a member of the Central Florida community and we feel it is our responsibility to give back to a variety of charities that are making our city a better place to live, work and shop,” states Steven Jamieson, CSM, general manager, The Mall at Millenia.

Beyond hosting the annual ONE NIGHT event, The Mall at Millenia has generously sponsored the event and has continued to increase their level of support in a variety of ways. They have donated one of their colossal Christmas trees to Winnie Palmer Hospital accompanied by an annual tree lighting ceremony and Santa visit. In addition, Santa’s Magical Arrival, which kicks off the holiday season, along with the one of their Santa photo packages benefits Arnold Palmer Hospital. The mall has also continuously made strategic introductions and encouraged other partners and mall tenants to philanthropically support Orlando Health through independent fundraising events, provision for auction items to generate funds and more.

“We are so grateful for the relationship we have built over the years with The Mall at Millenia,” says Cheryl Collins, Foundation vice president. “They have been so generous to us as hosts of our most widely recognized event and have also consistently worked on our behalf to further our mission in the community. In my mind – that is true partnership.”

Below is a summary of upcoming events and initiatives supporting Orlando Health. Events included represent a wide variety of event format, price levels and areas of support throughout Orlando Health. We encourage you to consider these opportunities to get involved!
