N/A None

18. Theoretical Topics: Lecturer's Name

Week Subject Shvan A. Taher (6 hrs/Week)

1

Introduction of Foundation Engineering - The soil beneath structures responsible for carrying the

loads is the foundation. But, in general, it is the lowest part of a structure or building that transmits its weight safely to the underlying soil or rock.

2

Types of Foundation - Foundation might be: shallow, or deep. - What type of foundation you choose will depend upon

many factors: Structure, Ground and Cost.

3

Site Investigation and Soil Exploration - All office, laboratory and field works are done in order to

explore the subsurface of soil or rock conditions at any given site to obtain the necessary information required in design and construction. Subsoil exploration is the first step in the design of a foundation system. Soil exploration consists essentially of boring, sampling and testing.

5

Bearing Capacity - In geotechnical engineering, bearing capacity is the

capacity of soil to support the loads applied to the ground. The bearing capacity of soil is the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil. - Inclined load

- Eccentric load - Footings on layered soils - Foundation on rock

6 Bearing Capacity

7 Bearing Capacity

8

Settlement of Foundations - Settlement is a term that describes the vertical

displacement of a structure, footing, road or embankment due to the downward movement of a point. - Immediate settlement - Consolidation settlement - Secondary consolidation settlement

- Degree or rate of settlement

9 Settlement of Foundations

10 Settlement of Foundations

11 Shallow Foundations Design

- Structural design of footings

12 Shallow Foundations Design

13

Pile Foundation - Pile is a structural member made of wood, steel or concrete

used to transmit the load from superstructure to underlying soil stratum in the following cases:

- When the soil profile consists of weak compressible soils, - If qapplied > qall

- Driven piles - Bored piles

Earth Retaining Structures (Retaining Walls) - There are three categories of lateral earth pressure. The

magnitude of each type depends upon the retaining wall movement relative to the backfill. (At rest earth pressure, Active earth pressure and Passive earth pressure).

- Retaining walls are structures used to provide stability for earth or other materials at their natural slopes. In general, they are used to hold back or support soil banks and water or to maintain difference in the elevation of the ground surface on each of wall sides. Also, retaining walls are often used; in the construction of buildings having basements, roads, or bridges when it is necessary to retain embankments or earth in a relatively vertical position.
