Patient Story: Dave Palesano

After months of vertigo and not feeling like himself, Dave Palesano ended up in the Mercy Hospital Ardmore emergency room. At just 63, he was diagnosed with leukemia. A few weeks later, still reeling from his cancer diagnosis, Dave was again rushed to Mercy’s ER. He needed two stints immediately placed into his heart to help unblock the main cardiac arteries. Following the heart procedure, Dave spent time in Mercy’s ICU before the family once again turned their focus to defeating cancer.

“I have no doubt that donors like you helped save my dad’s life,” said his daughter Sara Cope. “My dad needed a high level of care to manage his cancer treatment and the multitude of other health issues that came with it. Your donations help Mercy purchase lifesaving equipment, fund new treatment technologies and employ exceptional staff.”

In 2015, Sara’s brother Ben ran the A2A half marathon in their father’s honor. When Ben crossed the finish line, his dad was there to put the medal around

his neck. One year later, at the 2016 A2A, Dave himself walked the 5k. “We kept seeing my dad’s Mercy nurses and caregivers on the sidelines cheering him on,” said Sara. “We’re forever grateful for the exceptional care we found at Mercy, but also for the love, hope and kindness that my dad encountered at every step along the way.”

“Since its founding nearly two hundred years ago, Mercy has always been

A New Award at the Gala

At the gala, Mercy Health Foundation executive director André Moore presented the first Kriet-Davidson Appreciation Award to Alison Smalley, creator of the Arbuckles to Ardmore Race for Mercy. From left: Curtis Davidson, Alison Smalley, André Moore and John Kriet.

Mercy Health Foundation Ardmore hosted its second annual gala on New Year’s Eve 2015. The event was a great success with over 200 seats sold, raising over $17,500. At the gala, the Foundation introduced the new Kriet-Davidson Appreciation Award. Given to the individual (or business) who has made the most substantial contribution to advancing Mercy Health Foundation Ardmore, the award was named after John Kriet and Curtis Davidson, who played vital roles in the fundraising efforts for the new Ardmore

Patient Tower. The first Kriet-Davidson Appreciation Award was presented to Alison Smalley, creator of the Arbuckles to Ardmore Race for Mercy. Instead of a plaque, a local artist was commissioned to paint a landscape scene incorporating A2A and Alison’s initials.

supported by the communities it serves,” said Mercy Health Foundation executive director André Moore. “We are so grateful for the dedication of families like the Palesanos who help Mercy extend our mission to even more people.”
