BEYOND BROCHURES To date, most programs to promote sustainable behaviours have relied upon disseminating information. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little or no effect on what individuals or businesses do. But if not ads, brochures or booklets, then what? A new approach, community-based social marketing, has emerged as an effec- tive alternative for promoting water and energy efficiency, waste reduc- tion, alternative transportation, and many other sustainable actions. In March and April of 2016, the founder of community-based social mar- keting, Dr Doug McKenzie-Mohr, will be in Australia and New Zealand delivering a series of introductory, advanced and masters community- based social marketing workshops. ABOUT THE PRESENTER For over two decades Dr McKenzie-Mohr, an environmental psycholo- gist, has been incorporating scientific knowledge of behaviour change into the design and delivery of community environmental programs. His best-selling book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior, has been recommended by Time magazine and his work featured in the New York Times. Dr McKenzie-Mohr has delivered community-based social marketing work- shops internationally for over 60,000 environmental program managers. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? These workshops will be of interest to those working to promote waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, conservation, modal transporta- tion changes, catchment protection, and other sustainable behaviour changes. Those who work to promote behavioural changes that pro- mote health, such as active lifestyles, will also benefit from attending. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Introduction: The two-day introductory workshop provides a compre- hensive introduction to community-based social marketing and how it is being applied throughout the world to foster sustainable behaviours. Those who attend the workshop will learn the five steps of community- based social marketing (selecting behaviours, identifying barriers, devel- oping strategies, conducting pilots, and broad scale implementation) and be exposed to numerous case studies illustrating its use. Advanced: The two-day advanced workshop provides an in-depth exploration of how community-based social marketing can be used to foster sustainable behaviour. This workshop introduces new research on selecting behaviours, identifying barriers and benefits (including market segmentation, survey sampling and survey creation), applying behaviour change tools (including some exciting new developments regarding the use of commitments, norms, prompts, goal setting, and social diffusion), and piloting programs. The workshop also addresses the effective use of social media and websites in the fostering of sustainable behaviour. Further, participants will also be coached in making community-based social marketing presentations to their agency or community and will receive PowerPoint and Keynote presentations for this purpose. To ensure a high level of learning and exchange of ideas, this workshop is restricted to individuals who have previously attended Dr. McKenzie-Mohr’s introductory workshop. Masters: This unique workshop builds upon the introductory and advanced community-based social marketing workshops offered by Dr McKenzie-Mohr (having attended both the introductory and ad- vanced workshops are mandatory prerequisites). Unlike conventional workshops, a significant portion of the learning in the Masters work- shop occurs before and aſter the session. This comprehensive learning experience is comprised of four components (three one-on-one video conference calls and a two-day workshop). This structure was created to provide attendees with the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills through a carefully craſted process in which each partici- pant is individually coached as they develop their own unique CBSM program. BEYOND BROCHURESTo date, most programs to promote sustainable behaviours have relied upon disseminating information. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little or no effect on what individuals or businesses do. But if not ads, brochures or booklets, then what? A new approach, community-based social marketing, has emerged as an effec-tive alternative for promoting water and energy efficiency, waste reduc-tion, alternative transportation, and many other sustainable actions.

In March and April of 2016, the founder of community-based social mar-keting, Dr Doug McKenzie-Mohr, will be in Australia and New Zealand delivering a series of introductory, advanced and masters community-based social marketing workshops.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERFor over two decades Dr McKenzie-Mohr, an environmental psycholo-gist, has been incorporating scientific knowledge of behaviour change into the design and delivery of community environmental programs. His best-selling book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior, has been recommended by Time magazine and his work featured in the New York Times.
