Fostering Faith Catechist Certification (FFCC)
What is Fostering Faith Catechist Certification? Fostering Faith Catechist Certification (FFCC) is a formation
process leading to Archdiocesan Catechist Certification. This process offers catechists, who work with children,
teens or adults, the knowledge and skills needed for the catechetical ministry through five courses.
What is a Course? A Fostering Faith Certification Course consists of ten clock hours in a particular area of study.
There are five courses in Fostering Faith. Most sites offer the ten hours spread out over four weeks (2.5 hours
each night). You will notice that some sites, however, are offering the option of completing the course in two
weeks (5 hours each day).
Who participates in Fostering Faith Catechist Certification? FFCC is primarily for catechists who work with
children, teens or adults in parish or school settings, but FFCC courses are also open to any adults who wish to
deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith or are involved in other parish ministries.
How does FFCC serve the diverse ethnic communities of Chicago? In addition to providing quality
presentations at many convenient locations, FFCC also offers courses in three languages (English, Polish and
Spanish) as well as sites that are open to all but serve from a unique cultural perspective such as the Catching the
Spirit sites (Afrocentric perspective). Presenters at these sites represent the gifted catechetical expertise of the
particular ethnic community while participants bring with them the rich experience and traditions of their
culture.
What is Fostering Faith/Catching the Spirit? Fostering Faith/Catching the Spirit addresses the vision of
catechesis for the Black Catholic community.
hispana.
What is Catechesis within Youth Ministry? Catechesis within Youth Ministry is the fifth course required to be
certified as a youth ministry/catechist. This course is designed to promote the mission and vision of catechesis
within the context of Youth Ministry.
What is a Youth Ministry Catechist? An adult volunteer (over 18 years old) who, under the direction/
supervision of the Coordinator of Youth Ministry, assists in the implementation of a comprehensive Youth
Ministry for early, middle, and late adolescents.
Who are the presenters? The faculty for FFCC includes Coordinators from the Office for Catechesis and Youth
Ministry, Parish Directors of Religious Education, and Parish Pastoral Ministers with expertise in the various
curriculum areas.
Do I have to bring anything? Catechists are required to bring a Bible, the US Catechism for Adults, notebook/
paper and pen for taking notes. The USCCA will be available for purchase to be used throughout your studies.
Who submits the Records of Formation for Certification? The Catechetical Leader must submit to OFCYM the
following required documentation for Catechist Certification for each catechist: Application for Certification,
Record Card and a $10 Certification fee. The individual students keep attendance records on the Record of
Formation Form (available on the OFCYM website). Students notify the parish catechetical leader (DRE, CRE or
CYM) when the five FFCC courses (ten hours each) have been completed.
What is the catechist Certification Renewal Process? All catechists are required to renew their certification every
five years following initial certification. Catechists are required to complete fifty hours of ongoing formation over
a period of five years (ten hours in each curriculum area). The individual students keep attendance records of
ongoing formation on the record of ongoing formation form (available on the OFCYM website) At the time of
renewal, the Catechetical Leader is required to send the appropriate records of ongoing formation, application for
renewal of certification with a $10 certification renewal fee.
Our prayer is that you may be inspired to enthusiastically proclaim the Word of God!

Fostering Faith: A Catechist Certification Process for the Archdiocese of Chicago
Catechists are entrusted with the task of opening hearts and minds to the message of Jesus alive in the Church and
must have a solid understanding of the faith and skills necessary to proclaim that message to others. For this reason,
Archdiocesan policy requires all catechists to “participate in ongoing formation in faith, catechetical training and
education,” leading to Archdiocesan catechist certification (Book II, Policy 1401.1). Catechist Certification is granted
upon completion of 50 hours of formation in the following areas:
I. Revelation through Scripture and Tradition
This course will present a Catholic understanding of God’s self-revelation through Scripture
and Tradition. It will examine the structure and content of the Old and New Testaments and the
importance of each in Christian life and catechesis.
II. Church and the Profession of Faith: Creed
This course will lead the learner to an understanding of the Creed as the core theological
source of catechesis. It will examine the development and the Church’s understanding of the
nature of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the role of the Church in continuity with the
mission of Jesus as well as other important concepts of our Christian Catholic Faith.
III. The Liturgy of the Church: Sacraments and Prayer
This course invites the participant to examine, understand and appreciate the liturgy of the
Church as it is celebrated through the Sacraments and prayer. Special attention will be given to
the Sacraments as sources of God’s grace and as a response to God’s call to a rich life in the
Catholic community.
IV. Life in Christ: Catholic Morality
This course invites the Catechist into a loving relationship with God in Christ. It will present the
dignity of the person, the moral responsibility conferred on us by God’s gift of freedom, the
process of conscience formation, the social teaching of the church and the personal and social
responsibility to live in justice as members of the Catholic Christian community and stewards of
God’s creation.
V. Ministry of Catechesis
This course is designed to promote the mission and vision of Catechesis. It will examine the
vocation of Catechist and the qualities and skills needed to be a Catechist. The Catechists will be
introduced to psychological elements of human and faith development, and the methods of
catechizing according to the stages of faith development.
VI. Catechesis within Youth Ministry (Alternative Course V for Catechists of Youth / Youth Minister)
This course is designed to promote the mission and vision of catechesis within youth ministry.
It will examine the vocation of the Youth Minister as Catechist and the qualities and skills
needed to apply catechesis within the context of youth Ministry. Youth Ministers will be
introduced to psychological elements of human and faith development, methods of catechizing
according to the stages of faith development, planning within a catechetical framework,
suggest effective ways to empower youth as volunteers and provide service and other value-centered opportunities.
