SUMMER ADULT FORMATION – THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS The poll results are in from our winter session, and The Seven Sac-
raments won by a narrow margin, with Relationships & Boundaries in Scripture: Genesis, Mark, Timothy & Titus and Celtic Spirituality tied for second place. So, when we conclude next month’s sessions, I’ll take another vote to see what we should do in the winter, though Celtic Spirituality requires seven or eight sessions and that would be better left for summer 2018. Anyway, because of several Tuesday night conflicts, this summer’s sessions will be on seven consecutive Wednesdays at 7:00p.m. in the Burke Center, beginning on July 5 and concluding on August 16. The topics will be arranged in this way:
· July 5: Introduction & Sacraments of Vocation: Holy Orders
· July 12: Sacraments of Vocation, Pt. II: Matrimony
· July 19: Sacraments of Healing: Penance
· July 26: Sacraments of Healing Pt. II: Anointing of the Sick
· August 2: Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism
· August 9: Sacraments of Initiation Pt. II: Confirmation
· August 16: Sacraments of Initiation Pt. III: Eucharist
When I’ve done this topic in the past, I used four sessions, but the input and discussion stretched things out beyond a reasonable length. So since we have the time (at least I do!), I decided to stretch it to the logical number of seven, each of which should last from 60 to 90 minutes so that no one will go home tired, especially if we have a heat wave like last year. But unfortunately once again, I have to limit the number to a maxi-mum of 40 participants to avoid having anyone sitting on someone else’s lap, so please call the rectory office as soon as you can if you wish to attend. And even though this isn’t strictly Scripture Study, we will be looking at a considerable number of bible passages so you will need a Revised New American Bible. If you don’t have one and would like to purchase one for $10.00, just indicate that when you register. I’ll look forward once again to seven lively evenings of study, dis-cussion and sharing. Fr. Bob

The Bishops of the United States have called all the faithful to celebrate a Fort-night for Freedom from June 21 to July 4, 2017. The theme of this year's Fortnight is “Freedom for Mission”. We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by seeking the truth, serving others, and liv-
ing our faith in all that we do. Join others each day from June 21 - July 4 to pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad.
This is the sixth year the Parish of St. Joseph (17951 Dixie Highway, Home-
wood) will be celebrating the Fortnight with a nightly prayer vigil in church at
7:00 p.m. repeating each evening until July 4th. All parishioners, friends, fam-
ily, surrounding parishes and the community are invited to attend. The prayer
service will last approximately 20 minutes to be immediately followed by reci-
tation of the Rosary for those who choose to participate. Viva Cristo Rey!
ANNUAL MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN APPEAL
JUNE 24TH AND 25TH
A representative of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary, Sister Monica Devine, will be with us on the weekend of June 24th & 25th, 2017. The community was founded in Ire-land in 1924 to work with the women of Nige-ria, West Africa. The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary are now an international commu-nity working in nine countries of Africa and in Brazil. They are a strictly missionary group with no institutions in the United States or Canada, so therefore rely almost exclusively on funds provided through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the generosity of the people back home to support their sisters on mission. They are deeply grateful for your contribution. If you would like to see more about them, their website is: www.mshr.org.
BLESSING MASS
Next Sunday, June 25th, the Elizabeth Ministry is
sponsoring a Blessing Mass at 11:30am for expec-
tant mothers. This blessing is for pregnant women
and those women who are planning to adopt or fos-
ter a child. Please invite any family, friends or
neighbors who are expecting a baby.

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD
OF CHRIST - JUNE 18, 2017
GOSPEL READING John 6:51-58 Jesus says, “I am the living bread.”
FAMILY CONNECTION Our faith teaches us that when we gather to celebrate Mass, Jesus is present to us. The bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is what we mean by the word transubstantiation: Jesus makes himself present to all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
If there are children in your family who have already celebrated their First Holy Communion, invite them to share their memories of this special day. If there are family photos taken on this occasion, bring them out and share them together. Adults in the family may also share memories or photos that they have of their First Commun-ion. Then read together today’s Gos-pel, John 6:51–58. Reflect together on what Jesus means when he calls himself the “living bread.” Recall that every time we receive the Eucharist, Jesus keeps the promise he made in today’s Gospel—those who eat his flesh and drink his blood will remain forever connected to him. Perhaps family members can share what it means for them to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Together thank God for this gift of Holy Communion. Pray to-gether the Lord’s Prayer or today’s Psalm.

Summertime and the living is easy.....not necessarily true for every-one. School is out and the kids are hungry, no school lunch or break-fast to help satisfy their hunger, they are looking for food in their cabi-nets at home. The kids are not alone, there are many of every age group that are in need. The South Suburban Catholic Charities Food Pantry needs YOU. They greatly appreciate your donations of cereal, pasta & sauce, tuna, canned chicken or meat, all canned goods---all non-perishable food items. Please bring your donations to our quar-
terly Food Drive before all masses on June 24—25.
If you prefer, cash or checks can be given to the volunteers collecting
food at church, they will give it to the Pantry
The people of our parish have always been generous. Thanks for mak-ing this event a success.

Celebrating St. Joseph School
ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL MEMORIES
My favorite memories were End of the Quarter activities, the awards and games. The whole school really got together. Also, the end of the year Fun Fair, when we’d go to the park and come back and play games.
My favorite teachers were Miss Galvan in third grade, Mrs. Armbruster, eighth grade English and literature, and Mrs. Karvoski for science. Kevin Thomas Class of 2008
I have too many memories to count. Chris Leppellere Class of 2002
I remember the box lunches to raise money for the missions. It was a competition and they’d announce the boys were ahead and then the girls would find a few pennies or a nickel to put them ahead. If you got a box lunch with a can of pop, that was really a winner. Tom Memmesheimer Class of 1967
One of my best memories was the eighth grade dinner-dance, and I won the American Legion Award on a stu-dent vote. Kathy Hallman Class of 1987
One of my favorite things was being the eighth grade lunch room monitor for the younger kids. Brianna Taylor Class of 2004
Sister Suniva taking us out on the blacktop to do military drills for exercise. She would line us up and we'd have to count off snapping our heads as we shouted out our numbers and then run double time back to class. Nancy Cary White Class of 1967
Sister Armella was my fourth grade teacher and the consummate taskmaster. I didn’t appreciate it then but her passion for teaching helped instill a life-long passion for learning. Even though Sister Armella could have lightened up on the corporal punishment (imagine the static a teacher would get today if she or he used the same smash mouth tactics Sister Amella employed), I learned a lot from her. Moreover, I was rather proud that I was one out of maybe three students (of about 43 in class) she didn’t make cry during the entire 1962-63 school year. Denny Bruno Class of 1967

Celebrating St. Joseph School
ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL MEMORIES St. Joseph School has been an extension of my family for the past 40 years. It all started when my oldest child started first grade and continued for the next consecutive 20 years when at least one of my children was at the school.
During those years I volunteered in many capaci-ties including: room mom, picture lady, classroom lunch monitor, field trip chaperone, office aide, assisted with Student Council, Parents' Club and three terms on the School Board. One of my chil-dren was in the first kindergarten class.
It was at the end of my last term on the School Board when Sister Nancy approached me regard-ing an upcoming open position in the school li-brary. With one child in college, two in Catholic high schools and one still at St. Joseph's, I gave her offer serious thought and did accept. It's a decision I've never regretted.
Over the past 26 years, I've been associated with supportive colleagues and hundreds of wonderful students. My greatest joy has been witnessing reluctant readers become reading enthusiasts. As librarian, I introduced the Accelerated Reading program to our school which, with the support of our teachers, has proven to consistently demonstrate growth in our students. One of the greatest rewards was having former students drop in for an unexpected visit to share their memories and achievements.
I'm sad to see the school closing its doors, but also realize there is a season for everything. We've had many decades of reaping a bountiful harvest and graduating outstanding leaders in all walks of life; and now it's the season to celebrate the 91-year history of St. Joseph School. It has been a pillar of respect and strength in the Homewood community and I'm grateful that my children are part of its history. I'm honored and grate-ful to have served. Carol Zakaras Librarian
Fred Knoll, Class of 1949, came to the May 20 celebration with his daughter, Maria Knoll Benner, Class of 1980. Fred remembered the nuns being very tough with him and his three brothers. “Sister Mara Stella, set me back two grades one year for talking back,” he said. Still, he loved St. Joseph’s and sent his four children through his alma mater. His son, Joseph, today is Rev. Joseph Knoll serving in Phoenix.
Maria recalled the wonderful teachers who “even then you knew when you were complaining that they could make more money teaching somewhere else. St. Joe’s was a nice safe place; you knew all the kids and the families.”
Going through the school for the last time is bittersweet. I was here first grade through when I graduated. My favorites were Sister Suniva, seventh grade, and Sister Joe Henry, fifth grade. Peggy Bojanowski Class of 1967

SWADDLE
SWADDLE, the Southwest Area Diaper Depository for Little Ends, is a diaper bank agency providing diapers to needy families in Chicago’s Southland. SWADDLE does not distribute diapers to individuals. The diapers SWADDLE collects are given to local social service agencies in Chicago’s Southwest side and suburbs. So, when we donate to SWADDLE we are helping needy families throughout Chicago’s Southland.
This Sunday, the Respect Life Ministry initiated the on-going collection for Dis-posable Diapers. The crib is placed in the Northwest corner of St. Joseph Church, and it will be a repository for an on-going collection of Disposable Dia-pers. However often you can afford to buy a package of disposable diapers, please bring it with you to Church and put it in the Crib. The Respect Life Min-istry will do the rest.
Thank you. Respect Life Ministry

EAT WELL, BE WELL The percentage of Americans with diabetes has nearly doubled in the past two decades, according to a new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine. While genetics often plays a role in whether or not you have diabetes, lifestyle also makes a big difference, both in preventing diabetes and in managing it once you are diagnosed. Eating well is especially important. Follow these simple, healthy eating tips:
· Do not skip meals. Eat at least three well-balanced meals each day. · Eat at consistent times every day and space meals to no more than five
hours to six hours apart. · Avoid concentrated sweets: regular syrups, sugar, honey, jam, jelly, hard
candy, cake, pie, cookies, chewing gum, soft drinks and fruit drinks. · Include fiber-rich foods in a daily meal plan by choosing whole grain
breads, cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables and dried beans. · Use fresh fruits or canned fruits packed in water or natural juices. Avoid
fruit canned in “heavy” or “lite” syrups. All juices should be 100 percent fruit juice, unsweetened or “no added sugar.”
· Remember that “sugar-free” labels on foods, such as cakes, cookies and candies, does not mean the foods can be eaten freely and are completely sugar-free. Check labels for grams of total carbohydrates.
· Bake, broil or roast meats. Avoid frying or breading meats. Avoid adding extra servings of butter, margarine or cream sauces to vegetables.
In our faith communities, we can recognize how diabetes impacts our mem-bers and be intentional about how we share meals together. Start a “Healthy Potluck” policy that asks people to bring dishes that follow the tips above. Don’t serve beverages that are loaded with sugar. Be aware of people for whom eating well may be difficult—isolated seniors, people with disabilities, those with limited resources—and talk with them about what they would find helpful. How we live together in community can literally change someone’s life!
Wishing you joy and good health,
Mary Bohlen RN [email protected]
