Fossil Fuels By: Glizyl Luna
What are Fossil Fuels?
They are natural substances made deep within the earth from the re-mains of ancient plants and animals. Over quite some time the heat turned these into fuels and when its burned it releases energy.
The Three Types of Fossil Fuels The three main types
of fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas.
They all come from the underground in similar ways.
The fossil fuels sup-ply about 90 percent of the world's energy
How is coal formed? Coal started out as a large
fern and tree like plants that grew in swamps.
Plants died and then piled up at the bottom of the wa-ter.
They were buried under wa-ter and composed on by bacteria and the plants de-cayed into brown stuff called peat.
The peat was covered with mud and sand which was smashed together to heat it up which squeezed out wa-ter and carbon.
Stages of Coal The layers of coal are
formed called seams. Coal then will be
mined out of the ground.
Coal is estimated to last another 200 years.
It is also provides 27 percent of the world's energy.
What is coal used for Coal is used for 40
percent of the world's electricity.
Electricity is made from plants when coal is burned to change water into steam and steam turns into turbine.
Coal produces car-bon dioxide.
How is oil formed Oil was formed by tiny plants and animals that were called plankton
The plankton then died and sank to the bottom of the lakes and seas.
They also were buried under layers of sand and mud.
They were then squeezed together to turn into a hard rock.
The bacteria then munched the plankton which changed into dark ooze.

How is natural gas formed Natural gas is formed
just like oil The planktons died
and sank in the lakes and seas.
The gas would be drilled out of the ground too.
It is made up of methane, butane, propane, and ethane.
How is natural gas used as a fossil fuel
Electricity steel gas
What are refineries and why are they important to production of fossil fuels
Refineries are indus-trial process plant where crude oil is processed into more useful petroleum products.
It is important to the production of fossil fuels because it helps make plastic and gasoline which are necessities to our life.
Exxon Valdez It was an oil spill in
Prince William Sound, Alaska
On March 24,1989 It was spilled there
about an estimate of 10.8 million US gal-lons.
It was the largest oil spills in US waters
Deep Water Horizon oil catastrophe The spill was on April
20,2010. It was from the sea
floor of the Gulf of Mexico.
This caused an ex-plosion in the south-east of Louisiana coast.
