The Rotary Club of Bendigo held it’s Annual General Meeting before

Tuesday’s regular meeting.

With President Brian looking after wife

Bev after her recent operation it was up to immediate Past President Wayne Smith to preside over the AGM and present the financial report for the year ended 30th June, 2012.

All was looking good for a record meeting until someone noticed the report reported a net deficit for the year and PP Wayne had to explain that some of the

distributions from previous years had not been paid out until this

year. There was some discourse that this should have been better explained within the report and I’ll hand pass that one back to the board deal with.

We welcomed Terry Dalwood from RC of Bendigo South who has taken over the mantle of Christmas Cake sales coordinator and I have included the options and contacts within the Fossicker.

Libby Hughes addressed the meeting to thank members for their support of the weekends Swap Meet rosters. Libby put a lot of work into getting the roster staffed and I think on behalf of the club she is to be congratulated on her persistence and commitment in not only getting names into the roster but also manning the staffing tent and allocating people to their appropriate roles over the weekend. Well done Libby. Please note that the volunteer passes, see pic, that Libby supplied to members need to be handed back to Libby at your earliest convenience.

Most of you will have received requests from PP Wayne about this weekends parking duties at the RV Leisurefest out at the Epsom Jockey Club. This

is the last of these major efforts for the silly season that this time of year has become but a big final effort is required from everyone to get us over the line. At the time of going to ‘press’ Wayne was till missing 3 more for the Friday, 3 for the Saturday and 5 for the Sunday roster.

Joy Bruce and Val Barker presented a letter and postcard from last year’s exchange student Anna Isotalo of Finland. Anna had spotted the post card in a shop and recognised her house in the background so couldn’t miss the opportunity to share it with us. They are included.

Ian Monotti gave us some notice of changes afoot with Government legislation that will impact on our club structure. Something about us ending up with two secretaries and not needing an auditor, under the legislation. Ian commented that it was probably a good idea for us to continue the practice of appointing an auditor and a public officer, no matter what the legislation says, and he will give further explanation once everything becomes final.

GUESTSPEAKERThis week’s guest speaker was Jeff Rigby, CEO of Coliban Water.

There was some attempt to hi-jack Jeff’s attendance at the meeting by the combatants in next week’s great debate, about recycled water, but Jeff was avoiding any kind of comment on the issues, less he be quoted. I think you can see PP Jack Gallagher trying to garner favour in the picture at right.

Having evaded the debate issues Jeff went on to tell us a bit about himself, born and bred country boy from

Colerain, educated in Ballarat and with an engineering degree from Ballarat University he started his working life with the Ballarat Water Board.

Jeff was the MD of the Grampians-Wimmera-Mallee Water during the replacement of the open channels system with the Wimmera Mallee pipeline that reshaped the lives of many people in the region with a reliable water source for the first time in their history.

On his horizon in the short term is next week’s public forum to present/discuss the proposed Coliban water pricing plan for the next 5 years. Good luck with that one Jeff.

Interestingly Jeff was a GSE team member 20 years ago from District 9780, which covers most of western Victoria and some of SA.

The five member team included a primary school teacher, an undertaker, a dentist, a water engineer (Jeff) and a fifth member that I failed to right down. They were hosted by District 6740 which covers some of Kentucky and Ohio in the USA.

A Notice for Chairman - To assist the President and as a courtesy to guest speakers, when the president calls for visiting Rotarians and guests to be introduced, the Chairman for the day is asked, please, to stand and introduce the guest speaker by name with the comment that he/she will be more formally introduced later in the meeting.

Members are reminded that if for any reason you are unable to fulfil the duty for which you are rostered it is your responsibility to arrange a replacement

Jeff spoke very warmly of his experience on the exchange and still has contact with friends he made on the trip. They covered 15 city and town stopovers, billeted into the local Rotary communities and Jeff remembers that Australia’s Andrew Gaze was big news as a college basketballer, throughout Kentucky.

Jeff still had a couple of the banners he received during his trip and he present one to our club after his presentation.

NEXTWEEKNext week we will hold the ‘Great Debate’ where the teams of Glenn Reilly, Jack Gallagher and Wayne ‘Professor’ Smith against Ted Rankins, Val Barker and Peter Reading will debate the topic ‘Bendigo should be drinking recycled water’. This is an evening meeting and partners and guests are most welcome. See ya’ll there.

To finish of the meeting PP Wayne organised the drawing of the raffle and the winning ticket Orange F51 was being held aloft by Arthur Glazebrook.

Until next week,

Thanks, Editor Noel

Seinajoki - Wednesday 19/09 - Hello!!I wanted to address this letter to the whole club, so I sent it this Bendigo Club where you gather. Hopefully it will eventually find its way to your meetings. So on Monday I finally got to meet the club that sent me over there. They had a lunch meeting, and it was their 30th anniversary. In Finland 50 is often the magical age with everything, and before that there’s no big celebration, so the meeting was just half an hour longer than a usual one. Instead of guest speaker, the funding members of the club were telling the story of the club, I had a speech about my year, and almost the whole Rotary Club of IImajoki (neighbour town) mad a visit and brought five red roses. The visiting club also sang the birthday song (you hear that song often here, since it seems to suit every situation, since our birthday song just says: “Lot’s of congratulations”...).Oh, and there was cake, good reason to join the meeting! (PS. Alida, Joy and Val, some of the kilos really are gone already!).But after that long introduction let’s get to the point: I gave your banner there, which they thought to be beautifully detailed, and I received their banner to be sent to you guys over there. Good excuse to send you also a letter full of greetings and nonsense.Soon I’ll take again some old stuff to the Oppshops, one of the most concrete ways to notice you’ve changed during that year is probably growing out of your old things. I’ve got to know pretty well the both Aussie exchange-students in our school, and in two weeks

we’ll be a host family for Kaitlyn from KooWeerup. This is in many ways very much of a Rotary week, since today we’ll also hear some brainwash speeches to join Rotex (the just returned exchange students). It’s been really nice here in Finland, great to be with old friends, and because of my changes make many new ones, but I also miss Australia often. So don’t forget about me, ‘cause I’ll be back!! (As soon as possible)Be well, catch you later!Miss you - Anna Isotalo. XXXXX

Hello from Anna in Finland

I found this post-card of my home town where you can see our house (I think I’ve at some point shown it already to someone...) Anyway I circled the window of my room, since circling the whole house would’ve been messy. It’s spring in the card, ‘cause the snow has melted from the road and the yards of the houses, but there’s still some left on the hill they sit in.So greetings!!

INTERNATIONAL SERVICEPlease find attached some information about the Mandala Foundation’s upcoming Vocations in Aid (ViA) conference, which may be of interest to some of your members and youth networks who are involved or are interested in working or volunteering on international aid and development projects.

The conference will be held in Melbourne on Friday 7th December, 2012. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Pathways in Humanitarian Aid and International Development’, and it is suitable for prospective aid workers and volunteers of all ages and vocational backgrounds, from school and tertiary students to professionals and retirees. Returned aid workers and volunteers will share their experiences of working and building a career in the aid sector, from short-term field deployments right through to managerial and headquarter-based roles. Representatives from a range of organisations will also talk about their recruitment processes and policies for supporting staff and volunteers across the cycle of deployment, and Mandala Foundation psychologists will offer insight into effective psychosocial support strategies to support more psychologically resilient, prepared and responsible aid workers and volunteers.

It would be much appreciated if you would consider sharing information about the conference with members at your next meeting, or include it on your club’s website/newsletter. Alternatively, please feel free to forward this email and the attached flyer to your members and affiliated community networks.

More information about the conference is available at: http://www.mandalafoundation.org.au/index.php?page=via2012

Kind Regards, Alanna Myers Communications Officer Mandala Foundation Inc.

INNER WHEEL THANKSThe Bendigo Inner Wheel ladies would love to give our Rotarians a hug and a big vote of thanks for supporting our fundraiser at the Bendigo Stadium last Tuesday night.

The evening was very successful – socially and financially – and our National Project of Cord Blood Stem Cell Research will benefit immensely.

Thank you sincerely, Rotarians.
