WADDUP KIWIN’S! It is with my honor to present to you the first FOS newsletter of the 2013-2014 year! With spring coming to an end and summer just around the corner, the spirit of service is still definitely high. I had the opportunity to see that spirit of service by reading through your articles and I truly believe that we can “splash back into service” with a bigger heart for KIWIN’S. It is through your service that our Ohana continues to build so keep it up KIWIN’S!

• Increasing the numbers of District wide activities• Establishing a stable and fair recognition system• Focusing on a strong and reliable promotion cycle• Having an intimate relationship between members and District Board• Making sure all of you have the best KIWIN’S year you could imagine! QuiteQuite honestly the list goes on and on, but I am positive with the hard work of our entire District and with the lead from our District Board - the positive and successful results will be on our side. I cannot wait to build on the wonderful year that is coming up ahead and more than anything, I am ready to fall in love with KIWIN’S once again. No matter what, the count-less hours of service as well as the up’s and down’s will be allall worth it in the end. Always remember that we are all in this together and that KIWIN’S is an ohana. Use each as a sup-port team and of course, I will always be here for all of you. Get ready and let’s make the world proud for what KIWIN’S can offer. With love always, Your GovernorErika Goto

• Raising awareness and reaching a total of $10,000 raised for Project Eliminate

To the passionate & loving souls of KIWIN’S,WWelcome to what promises to be a year full of unforgettable bonds and everlasting service. As cheesy as it sounds, I’m sure each and every one will experience that in some way, shape or form throughout the year. With that said, I am ec-static to officially introduce myself to all of you. My name is Erika Goto and I am your 2013-2014 District Governor. Some of you may remember who I am from when I served as your DistrictDistrict Awards Chair this past year. I can’t believe that I stand here today ready to begin my exciting term to serve all of you. To keep this sweet and short for all of you, here are the main focuses for this year. • Increasing the knowledge of Key Club International and K-Family throught the district

Dear KIWIN’S, Thank you for such an incredible year as your International Trustee! Even if we did not have a chance to get to know each other on a personal level, I can honestly say that I have appreciated you all as a district for being so welcoming, enthusiastic about service, and embodying the character traits of a true servant leader. At first I thought that the KIWIN’S Ohana would be like any other Key Club district family (not that that should be underestimated), but this district absolutely took family to a whole new level. I will always remember walking into the San Diego Town and Country Hotel for District Convention and being blown away by your undying club spirit—not Hotel for District Convention and being blown away by your undying club spirit—not only were you cheering for your own members, you cheered for other clubs and brought homemade themed gifts for everyone! I have never seen a district be so in-clusive and supportive of other clubs/district. Thank you for making me feel so wel-comed; I’m sure your love for service has touched many other members as well. But like the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. While I have cherished my time with Key Club International and CNH KIWIN’S, I will be retiring as your International Trustee in July. If you’re attending International Convention, please bring me a tissue (or an entire box) because I’ll probably be a crying mess. For the rest of you, I hope that you continue to serve your community whether that be through KIWIN’S, CNH Key Club, Circle K, or Kiwanis. Your impact on the world may seem small at first, but trust me, every action counts! I cannot wait to see where KIWIN’SKIWIN’S takes you, and more importantly, where you take KIWIN’S and Key Club In-ternational. Once again, thank you for a great term and please keep in touch! With love,

MaryAlice Peng2012-2013 International Trustee for California-Nevada-Hawaii KIWIN’S District of Key Club [email protected](206) 778-9966

P.S. I will be attending the University of Southern California for the next four years, so if any of you are in the area, feel free to come say hello!

Hi everyone,MyMy name is José Baeza, Sapphire Lieutenant Governor of 2013-2014. I attend Merced High School, and am part of the class of 2015. If anything you should know about me is I’m a hard worker, being Ltg. Is probably the first leadership role I’ve ever taken on. Before I was the one going to events daily trying to help in any way, it was hard for me to be in charge of events, because I was used to taking orders. Howev-er, since joining KIWIN’S I’ve built on my foundation of hard labor and built a home for leadership.built a home for leadership.

HI EVERYONE! MyMy name is Karina Wang and I am the proud Lieutenant Governor of Turquoise! I am seventeen years old and attend Adolfo Camarillo High School as an upcoming senior. I really love dancing, but not the legitimate kind- the kind comprised of old school moves and as funny as it is, I am completely not afraid to make a total fool of myself on the dance floor (or anywhere!) Other than that, I really enjoy crafting/mak-ing things out of everyday items, playing sports, and spending any of mymy free time doing what I do best: eating and sleeping. Some fun facts about me are that I love coffee and am still awaiting for my super powers to arise. :)

Hi you guys! ThisThis is Sammantha Garcia, Ruby LTG, and if you don't know me already, I just wanted to introduce myself. I go to East Bakersfield High School in the East side of Bakersfield. :) Class of 2016! I love to draw, listen to music, play the cello, watch movies/anime, laugh, nap, think, and daydream. I have never met in my life so many great people who care so much for their community and world. I love you all and KIWIN'S so much. I can't wait to get to know everyone. KIWIN'S FOREVER!

so our KIWIN’S major emphasis is to ensure that these kids grow to their full potential. This service initiative focuses the attention of KIWIN’S members to service children in a specific, hands-on approach.

Live2Learn is a program that focuses on helping children at the ages of five to nine overcome learning obsta-cles in their lives. The main goals of this program are promoting the benefit of education and building literary skills. The three main areas of focus are: getting good grades; giving back-a way for younger children to give back to their communities; and growing together-interaction with kids through art projects, sporting events, games, and activities. This program not only exposes children to the positive aspects of learning, but also allows them to grow and thrive as individuals. The development of children in the early stages of life is essential,

Pediatric Trauma and unintentional injuries kill more children every year than any other cause. It affects children from infancy to age nineteen, and it is a result of car accidents, physical abuse, drowning accidents, falls, and animal bites. More than 14 million children fall victim to such accidents, and statistically, a child or adolescent visits the emergency room every second due to trauma. In an effort to do our part, KIWIN’S has focused on fighting Pediatric Trauma through raising funds and increasing general awareness about this tragedy. KIWIN’S attempts to incorporate the ob-jectives of PTP into service projects and has made it the minor emphasis for this year. Since 90% of all trauma incidents are preventable, we can really do our part and combat the effects of pediatric trauma.

Project ELIMINATE, our Governor’s Project for the 2013-2014 KIWIN’S year, aims to eradicate neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the world. Neonatal tetanus is a disease that has stolen the lives of millions of mothers and infants. This disease causes newborns to suffer repeated, painful convulsions and sensitivity to light and touch. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes, however, it is completely preventable. Only three doses of a sixty-cent immunization vaccine are enough to pro-tect these mothers and newborns. 31 countries have yet to eliminate the disease, but KIWIN’S can aid in this effort, Kiw-anis and UNICEF have established their goal of raising $110 mil-lion for Project ELIMINATE, and our KIWIN’S goal for the year is to contribute $10,000 to that effort. Through continuous fundrais-ing and advertising, KIWIN’S has pledged to aid in the fight against eliminating neonatal tetanus from the world.

WE BUILD, WE SERVE, WE ROCK!DuringDuring May, we also introduced a communi-ty service event to our members. Hancock Park Elementary School is a local elemen-tary school in our neighborhood. They were planning to hold their annual carnival and many were excited to participate. It was a great opportunity to help out our community and interact with children. Our members helped set up and run all different sorts of interesting booths. They played a big part in the carnival as the booths were the main at-tractions. Although it was hard work in the blazing sun, our club enjoyed the adorable kids and the event.Fairfax also held its banquet for the previ-ous and new officers. With the new board, Fairfax is ready to kick start June with inno-vative ideas and plans!

Hi KIWIN’S ♥I hope May was a fantastic month because it was definitely a great one for Fairfax KIWIN’S.Project Eliminate was one of our key highlights Project Eliminate was one of our key highlights of the month. Through selling delicious dough-nuts, making homemade boba, and receiving generous coin/cash donations, Fairfax was able to raise $400 in one week. Amazing, right?! To motivate our members to collect do-nations, the officers decided to award the person with the most coins, a cash prize. We couldn’t have accomplished this astounding goal without the support of our officers, mem-bers, and our school.

On April 27, 2013, our Jade division members collabo-rated to spend one day to pick up trash and weed the garden at city hall in honor of Global Youth Service Day. Our regional advisors provided us with the tools and materials and members provided the spirit of ser-vice. Our goal was to fill up all the trash bags. Initially members began weeding and cleaning up the place everywhere but then decided it'd be more efficient to clear the pathways. Members also cleared the weeds around the signs so that they won't be obscured. In the end, members accomplished the goal of filling up all the trash bags, clearing the pathways, and making signs discoverable. Without the members’ contribution, the garden would not be as beautiful as it is today. The divisiondivision had an awesome time bonding and hopes to do more events like these.

DIAMONDAPRILBYBEALAYUGANDOWNEYHS

TheThe month of April was a handful for the Downey High School KIWIN’S. To start it off, the KIWIN’S hosted the Stop Hunger Now food packaging event called Kiwanis One Day in the school gym. The purpose of Stop Hunger Now is to collect money and package meals with essential nutrients, and send them to students in Haiti. In doing so, parents would more likely send their kids to school to be fed, rather than sending them to work, starving and not receiving the education they need. On April 6, 2013, members from Key Club, Circle K, Kiwanis, Builders Club, and other volun-teersteers packaged more than 13,000 meals. At the same time, people ran laps to raise money for the meals. Members of KIWIN’S dedicated more than eight hours to pre-pare, package, and clean up for the event. Because of them, students in Haiti will have a chance to live another day with food in their mouths and parents won’t have to worry about not being able to care for their children. Along with that, the KI-WIN’S, along with other volunteers, ran the 5k run for TLC to fundraise for school supplies. Not only did the KIWIN’S get their exercise for the year, but they helped kids get the needed equipment for their educational journey.

CHANGINGLIVESONEDINNERATATIME

Many of us in this world are unsatisfied with what we have, but we should learn to appreciate what we do have. This is an important lesson that everyone should learn to comprehend. I constantly keep in my mind those who lack shelter, food, and resources. That is why our club KIWIN’S tries to give back to the commu-nity as much as possible. In our outstanding division, Goldstone, we have many divisional projects that consist of the five high schools in our division to come together for the same purpose. These schools are Glen A. Wilson, St. Lucy’s, Damien, Los Altos, and Chaffey. One my personal favorite divi-sional projects is Loaves and Fishes. This event takes place at the First United Methodist Church in Ontario, CA.CA. The purpose of this event is to give back and sup-port the homeless who unfortunately do not have a home to reside in. I enjoy participating in this event be-cause I love to see the people cherish their meal and also because their personalities are so heartwarming. I experience a satisfied feeling when I contribute to this event. At the event a handful of us serve the food to the homeless while others serve punch to the people arriv-ing. We also go around and offer refills.

I truly believe that this event is very important because if you think deep into the meaning of this event, then you realize that you have made a huge difference to people’s lives. It impacts the community because it gives these poor innocent souls a place to come together and have a good time. Not only do the homeless benefit from this event, event, but our club does as well. Loaves and Fishes is an event that we all remember and use to goad us forward. This event has taught me that we should be thankful of what we do have. In a way it has also changed my personality in a posi-tive way. I am always delighted to help out with this event and I am confident that others are too.

Color Run Group Photo!P.C. LQ

On a sunny and clear May 11th, 2013, La Quinta High School KIWIN’S drove all the way to the Orange County Great Parks in Irvine for the highly anticipat-ed Color Run! Volunteers registered at the blue tent and proudly donned their yellow volunteer shirts! We were assigned to the yellow powered check point where we grabbed bottles of yellow cornstarch and squeezedsqueezed the powder onto the incoming runners. Other volunteers also showed off their spirit by high fiving the runners and performing cheers! The race lasted about two hours. Afterwards, volunteers grabbed heavy-duty brooms and dustpans and col-laborated with each other in order to collect the lin-gering yellow cornstarch left on the ground. Then, volunteers walked back to the main festival area and enjoyed the rest of The Color Run. Later on, volun-teers travelled back to La Quinta High School all cov-ered up with different pigments of cornstarch as a reward from the afternoon volunteer services.

JETIn order to wrap up our successful month of May, LQ KIWIN’S de-cided to volunteer at a local marathon known as the Bubble Run 5K. Although this project has never been booked by our club before in La Quinta history, we decided to take a chance and check out the event. When we first arrived at the project, volunteers were automatically given orange Bubble-teer shirts in order to tell run-ners that we are here to assist them. Those with an orange shirt had various jobs such as passing out water and fruits, cheering on the runners, and keeping a look-out for any malfunctioning with the bubble machine. Since we brought over 60 volunteers, the project coordinator decided to place a few of us in certain color zones where we were able to personally operate the bubble machine as well as play with the bubbles.

Even though this is the first year that the Bubble Run 5K has ever taken place in this region of California, it turned out to be a huge success for over 4,000 runners attended and had most fun in their life. The Bubble Run 5K was nominated by our own LQ KIWIN’S members to be one of the most fun projects we’ve had beside the Color Run 5K which occurred in the beginning of May.

Hey KIWIN’S members! "May" I have your atten-tion because this month, Moorpark has accom-plished multiple service projects! So far it has been an unforgettable month with banquets, fund-raisers, and community service. Even though we are a newly formed club, we have already largely impacted our local community in a positive way.

During ELIMINATE week, we organized a “Pie-An-Officer” fundraiser to raise money to eradicate tetanus in third-world countries. After selling many tickets to our turtles, our eager and ecstatic members got their chance. We sold a total of over 150 tickets and made $137! We were thrilled with the results! It was an entertaining eventevent for everyone, and we all had a PIE-TASTIC time.

In all the fun and games, Moorpark KIWIN’S went and served our service members during Me-morial Day. At the Moorpark Memorial Service, we helped set up, served refreshments and food, and cleaned up with Moorpark Kiwanis members. Many of our members came out and served those that have served our nation. It was a great privi-lege to help and honor our military that sacrificed their lives for our nation.

May has been a really amusing month, but the months do not stop. With so much planned for the future, Moorpark will have a fun-filled summer that is full of smiles, sweat, and laughter.
