TheNobleProphet(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hassaid:ب منب ػ بهیقف ةمبیقنا وىی هللا هث بؼ بهب نى ؼ فتىی بثیدح هی ؼ بزأ يتمأ ىه ػ ظفح هم .“Thepersonfromamongstmynationwhomemorizesfortytraditionspertainingtothoseissuesof

religionwhichheisinneedof,AllahshallresurrecthimontheDayofJudgmentasascholarwithadeepinsightintothefaith.”n following theabovehadith,The IslamicEducationBoardofTheWorldFederationofKSIMC

(IEB - WF) has decided to publish a series of booklets of 40 ahadith on different subjects. Theahadith,whichhavebeenselectedfromvarioussources,areshortandsimpleandthereforeeasytounderstand and memorize. It is envisaged that the booklets will not only be useful for Zakireen,Madrasahteachersandstudents,butwillbeofbenefittotheUmmahatlarge.Thecollectionoftheahadith,togetherwiththeirtranslationinEnglish,wascarriedoutbyShaykh

Shahnawaz Mahdavi. IEB - WF would like to thank the Shaykh Mahdavi for his efforts in thecompilation and translation of thiswork.MayAllah (Glory andGreatness be toHim) accept thisworkasafurtherattemptbyIEB-WFtopropagateIslam.

2ChapterIntroduction

AlthoughourexistenceisfromAllah(GloryandGreatnessbetoHim),itisourparentswhoare

themeansofgivinguslife.Weareanoffshootoftheirexistenceandafruitofthegardenoftheirunparalleledaffection,training,loveandsentiments.When the forgetful human being grows up to become big and strong and comes to acquire a

certain credibility (in life), he forgets theperiodwhereinhewasweak and lacking in strength.Hedisregardstheexhaustiveeffortsofhisparents;whatingratitudecouldbeworsethanthis?Humanity and ethics demand that we safeguard these two jewels (our mother and father) - by

exhibiting goodness towards them while they are alive, and by means of charity and goodlyremembranceaftertheirdeath.Our livesareanextensionofourparent‟s liveswhileourchildren‟s livesareacontinuationof

ours. Our good behavior towards our parents and our exhibition of kindness towards them shallcauseourchildrentogrowupasgratefulandrighteousindividuals.Theyshallbehavewithusjustaswehavebehavedwithourownparents.JustasitisbeyondourmeanstofulfilltherightsofAllah(GloryandGreatnessbetoHim)andto

thankHimforallHisbountiesintheirentirety,similarlywecanneverthankourparentssufficientlyfortheirefforts.Theonlythingthatwecandoistoacknowledgeourinabilityandsubmitourselves,in humility and reverence, before these two angels.However, comprehension of their status in theeyesofAllah(GloryandGreatnessbetoHim)pavesthewaytofulfillsomeoftheirnumerousrights.Thetraditionsthatweshallreadinthiscollectionoffortytraditionsshallservetomakeusaware

ofsomeofourresponsibilitiestowardsourparents.MayAllah (Glory andGreatness be toHim) grant us theDivine success that wemay come be

regardedamongstthosewhohavebeengoodtowardstheirparents.“O‟Allah!Makeussuchthatwemaybegratefulfortheeffortsofourparents.”“O‟Allah!Makeussuccessfulinbringingforthagenerationofpure-hearted,believing,grateful

andrighteousindividuals.”

3ChapterTreatmentofParentsaccordingtotheNobleQur’an

“AndyourLordhascommanded that you shallnot serve (any)butHim,and that you shall show

goodnesstoyourparents.Ifeitherorbothofthemreacholdagewithyou,saynottothem(somuchas)“Ugh”norchidethem,andspeaktothemagenerousword.

1-TheGreatestObligatoryAct

TheCommanderoftheFaithful(peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“Goodnesstowards(one‟s)parents

isthegreatestobligatoryact.

”MizanulHikmah,Volume10,Page7092-TheBestofDeeds:Imam as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) has said: “The best deeds are: Salat in its stipulated hour,

goodnesstowardsparentsandJihadinthewayofAllah.

3-AttachmenttoParents[ApersononceapproachedtheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)andsaid:“I

haveanoldfatherandmother,whoduetotheirattachmenttowardsme,arenotkeenformetogotoJihad.”][Hearing this], theNobleProphet (peacebe uponhimandhis family) said: “(If such is the case

then)Staywithyourparentsfor,bytheOneinwhosecontrol liesmysoul, theirattachmentofonedayandonenighttoyouisbetterthanoneyearofJihad.”


4-TheMostBelovedDeedIbne `Abbas states:] “I questioned theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family):

WhichdeedisthemostbelovedintheeyesofAllah,theMighty,theGlorious?”He(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)replied:“(Offering)prayersattheirstipulatedtimes.”Ithenasked:“Whichisthenext most beloved deed?” He (peace be upon him and his family) answered: “Goodness towards(one‟s)parents.” Iaskedhimagain:“After thiswhich is themostbelovedact?”He(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“JihadinthewayofAllah.”


5-LookingatParents.

TheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“Everyrighteouschildwhocastsa look of mercy and affection upon his parents shall be granted, for every look of his, rewardsequivalenttothatofanacceptedHajj.”ThosearoundtheProphetquestioned:“O‟ProphetofAllah!Evenifheweretolookatthemahundredtimesaday?”TheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)replied:“Indeed!AllahistheGreatestandMostKind."


6-TheGreatRankofParentsImamal-Ridha (peacebeuponhim)has said: “Allah, theMighty, theGlorious, has commanded

three thingswithwhichhehas associated threeother things.Heassociatedpaymentof zakat alongwith prayers such that one who offers prayers, but desists from offering zakat, his prayers arerejected.HeassociatedgratitudetoHimwithgratitudetowardsparentssuchthatonewhoisgratefulto Allah, but ungrateful to his parents, will be deemed as ungrateful to Allah. He associatedrighteousnesswithbondsofkinshipsuchthatonewhoisrighteous,buthasseveredrelationswithhiskin,willbedeemedasnotbeingrighteous.”


7-KindnesstoParentsImamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“Goodnesstowardstheparentsisanindicationofa

person‟sexcellent cognizanceofAllah.This isbecause there isnoworship that can takeapersontowardsthehappinessofAllahfasterthanexhibitingrespecttowardshisMuslimparentsforthesakeofAllah.”

8-ObedienceTowardsOne’sParentsTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“One,whofollowstheordersof

Allahwithregardstoobeyingparents,shallhavetwodoorsofParadiseopenedupforhim.Andiftherehappenstobeonlyoneparent,onedoorofParadiseshallopenupforhim.”

9-TheMostExaltedStationTheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) has stated: “One who is obedient

towardshisparentsandhisLordshallbeaccommodatedinthemostexaltedofplacesontheDayofJudgment.”


10-RepaymentOfDebts

TheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hassaid:“OnewhoperformsHajjon

behalfofhisparentsandrepaystheirdebtsshallberaisedbyAllahontheDayofJudgementamongsttherighteousones.”


11-PleasingParentsTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“Onewhopleaseshisparentshas

verilypleasedAllah,andonewhohasangeredhisparentshasverilyangeredAllah.”


12-Shelteredbythe‘Arsh(Throne)ofAllahImamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)related:“OncewhenProphetMusa(peacebeuponhim)was

engagedinaconversationwithhisLord,TheMighty,TheGlorious,heobservedapersonbeneaththe `Arsh (Throne) ofAllah,whereuponhe (peacebeuponhim) asked:O‟MyLord!Who is thisperson,whoisbeingshelteredbyYour`Arsh?”Allahreplied:“Thispersonhadbeenkindandgoodtowardshisparentsandneverindulgedinslandering(them).”


13-TravelandbeGood!TheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“Travelevenfortwoyearstodo

goodtoyourparents.Journey(even)foroneyeartoestablishbondsofkinship(withyourrelatives).”


14-IncreaseinLifeandLivelihoodTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“Onewhodesiresalonglifeand

anincreaseinlivelihoodshouldexhibitgoodnesstowardshisparentsandestablishbondsofkinship(withhisrelatives).”


15-BenefitsofKindnesstoParents[HananIbnSudairnarrates:“WewereinthepresenceofImamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)and

amidstuswasMuyassir.Duringthediscussion,thetopicofsilahrahim(establishingbondsofkinshipwith one‟s relatives) came to the fore, whereupon] the Imam (peace be upon him), [addressingMuyassir],said:„O‟Muyassir!Onseveraloccasions,yourendhaddrawnnear,butoneachoccasion,Allahdelayedyourdeathdue toyouractsof silah rahimwithyour relatives. Ifyoudesire tohaveyourlife-spanincreased,exhibitgoodnessandkindnesstowardsyourparents.‟

16-FirstandForemost-beGoodtoyourMother

Imam as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) relates that once a person approached the Noble Prophet

(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)andasked:“O‟ProphetofAllah!TowardswhomshouldIexhibitgoodnessandkindness?”TheNobleProphetreplied:“Towardsyourmother.”Themanthenasked:“Andafterthattowardswhom?”TheNobleProphetagainsaid:“YourMother.”Heaskedagain:“Andthen?”Onceagain,hereplied:“Yourmother.”Forthefourthtimethemanasked:“Andthen?”Thistimehesaid:“(Thentowards)Yourfather.”


17-AsYouSowsoShallYouReap!TheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) has said: “Be good towards your

parentsandyourchildrenwillbegoodtowardsyou.(And)Lookuponthewomenfolkofotherswithpurity(inconductandintention)andyourwomenfolkwillbelookeduponwithpurity.”


18-TheRightsoftheFatherImam ar-Ridha (peace be upon him) narrates that a person once asked theMessenger of Allah

(peace be upon him and his family): “What are the rights of the father upon the son?”TheNobleProphetreplied:“Heshouldnotcallhisfatherbyname,heshouldnotwalkaheadofhim,heshouldnotsituntilhisfatherhasseatedhimselfandheshouldnotdosuchactsasaresultofwhichpeopleabusehisfather.”


19-WorshipinLookingTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hassaid:“Thelookofachildtowards

hisparentsoutofloveforthemisanactofworship.”


20-MeaningofGoodConductAbuWalladal-Hannatnarrates thatheonceasked Imamas-Sadiq (peacebeuponhim)about the

meaningofthewordsofAllah(intheQur‟an):(Andbegoodtoparents.”)[1]TheImam(peacebeuponhim)replied:“Beinggoodtothemmeanstoaccompanytheminagood

mannerandnevertowaitforthemtoaskyouforwhattheyneed.”


21-ResponsibilitiesTowardsOne’sParents

Imamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)hassaid(inregardstoone‟sparents):“Donotcastyourgaze

uponthemexceptwithloveandcompassion;donotraiseyourvoiceabovetheirs;donotraiseyourhandsabovetheirs;donotwalkaheadofthem.”


22-OnBehalfofParentsSadiq (peacebeuponhim)had said: “Whatprevents aperson fromdoinggood tohisparents -

whether alive or dead - by offering prayers, giving charity, performing Hajj on behalf of them,(knowingthat)therewardsoftheseactsarealsograntedtohim,inadditiontohisparents?Besides,due tohisgooddeedsandprayers (for them),Allah, theMightyand theGlorious, shallgranthimabundantgood.”


23-EvilParentsAndKindnessImamMuhammadal-Baqir(peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“TherearethreethingswhichAllah,the

Mighty and the Glorious has not permitted anyone to forsake: returning a trust to its owner,irrespectiveofwhetherheisagoodpersonoranevilone;fulfillingone‟spromisesandcovenants,irrespective of whether it has been made to a good person or an evil one; being good and kindtowardsone‟sparents,irrespectiveofwhethertheyaregoodorevil.”


24-PolytheistParentsInalettertoMa`mun,Imamar-Ridha(peacebeuponhim)wrote:“Todogoodtoone‟sparentsis

obligatory, even if they are of the polytheists, however, they should not be obeyed in acts that goagainstthecommandsofAllah.”


25-VisitingtheGravesofParentsIthasbeennarratedthattheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)said:“Whoever

visits thegravesofhisparentsoroneof themeveryFriday,Allah shall forgivehis sins and shallregardhimtobeofthosewhohadbeenkindtohisparents.”


26-KindnesstoParentsandParadiseImam ar-Ridha (peace be upon him) relates that theNoble Prophet (peace be upon him and his

family)hassaid:“Begoodandkindtoyourparentssothatyourrecompenseisparadise,andifyouhavebeendisownedbythem,yourabodeshallbethefire(ofHell).”

27-ASternLookImam as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) has said: “Had Allah known of a thing more trivial and

insignificantthantheword„ugh‟,hewouldhaveforbiddenit(tobespokentotheparents).Uttering„ugh‟(totheparents)isthemildestformofillconducttowardstheparents.Oneofthewaysinwhichapersoncanberegardedasbeingdisownedbytheparentsisthathecastsahardandsternlookuponthem.”

28-AHatefulLookImamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“Allahshallnotaccepttheprayersofapersonwho

looksathisparentswithhatred,eveniftheyhavebeenunfairtohim!”

29-MakingtheParentsSadTheCommander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) has said: “Onewho causes his parents to

becomesadhasindeedbeendisownedbythem.”


30-TheImam’sDispleasureImamMuhammadal-Baqir(peacebeuponhim)relates:“Oncemyfathersawapersonandhisson

walkingtogether.Astheywalked,thesonwasleaningagainstthearmofhisfather.(Thisactofthesonwassoabhorrentandinfuriatingtomyfatherthat)he(peacebeuponhim)neverspoketohimthroughouthislife.”


31-QuarrellingwithOne’sFatherImamas-Sadiq (peacebeuponhim) said: “There are three individuals thatwhoever argueswith

themshallsufferhumiliationanddisgrace:one‟sfather;a(just)ruler;andoneindebt.”


32-FragranceofParadise

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) has said: “Beware of become

disownedbyyourparents,forverilythefragranceofparadisewhichcanbesmeltfromadistanceofathousandyears,shallneverreachthenostrilsofonewhohasbeendisownedbyhisparentsandonewhohasseveredthebondsofkinship(withhisrelatives).”


33-NoEntryintoParadise!Imamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“Thepersonwhohasbeendisownedbyhisparents,

one who consumes intoxicants and one who does acts of goodness towards others but imposesobligationsuponthemshallneverenterintoParadise.”


34-AllahShallNotExhibitMercyUponThem!TheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hasstated:“OntheDayofJudgment

thereshallbefourgroupsofpeopleuponwhomAllahshallnotcastHislookofmercy:thosewhohavebeendisownedby theirparents, thosewhoplaceobligationsuponothersafterdoinggood tothem,thosewhorejecttheconceptoffateanddestinyandtheonewhoconsumesintoxicants.”


35-ChastisementinThisWorldTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hasstated:“Therearethreesins,the

punishmentsofwhicharehastenedandnotdeferredforthehereafter:disownmentbyone‟sparents,committingoppressionuponthepeople,andingratitudewithrespecttokindness.”


36-TheGraveSinػ٠Imamas-Sadiq (peacebeuponhim)hassaid:“Asin thatdarkens theskies isbeingdisownedby

one‟sparents.”


37–WretchednessImamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)hasstated:“Becomingdisownedbyone‟sparentsisoneofthe

GreatSins.ThisisbecauseAllah,theMightyandtheGlorious,hastermedsuchapersondisobedientandwretched.”


38–Perdition

Imamas-Sadiq(peacebeuponhim)relates:“Once,theMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimand

hisfamily)approachedayouthwhowasonthevergeofdying,andsaidtohim:“Say„ThereisnoGod exceptAllah.‟But the youth‟s tongue appeared to be tied and hewas unable utter thewords.Whenthistookplaceseveraltimes,theProphetsaidtoaladystandingneartheyouth‟shead:“Doesthisyouthhaveamother?”Theladyreplied:“Yes,Iamhismother.”TheProphetaskedher:“Areyouangrywithhim?”Sheconfessed:“Yes.Ihavenotspokentohimforthelastsixyears.”Hearingthis,he said toher: “Bepleasedwithhim.”Sheagreedandsaid:“O‟ProphetofAllah!For the sakeofyourpleasure,mayAllahbepleasedwithhim.”(Then,turningtotheyouth)hesaid:“Say„ThereisnoGod,exceptAllah‟).(Thistime)theyouthwasabletorecitethewordsandshortlyafterwards,hissouldepartedhisbody.”


39-ActswithoutBenefitsTheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhimandhisfamily)hassaid:“Onewhohasbeendisowned

byhis parents is told: „Act as youplease, for I shall not forgive you.‟Whereas onewho is goodtowardshisparentsistold,„Actasyouplease.Iwillbeforgivingtowardsyou.‟


40-ForgivenessofSinsImamZainul `Abidin (peacebeuponhim) relates:“Onceapersonapproached theMessengerof

Allah (peacebeuponhimandhis family)andsaid:„O‟ProphetofAllah! Ihavecommittedeveryknownevilact.IsthereachancethatImaybeforgiven?‟TheMessengerofAllahaskedhim:„Areanyofyourparentsstillalive?‟Themanreplied:„Myfather.‟Hesaidtohim:„Goandbegoodandkindtohim.‟Whenheleft,theMessengerofAllahmuttered:„Ifonlyhismotherhadbeenalive.‟”
