Principal’s Column
OH WHAT A NIGHT! The Parents’ Party was a fabulous success with over 300 parents and friends attending the party. Jules Lund was the MC for the evening along with a great band playing 50’s music. I hear that a ‘Les Girl’ was also invited to increase the hilarity gaining rich returns for the silent auction. There were many organisers and helpers from the PA to make this event such a success. Congratulations to:
Zoe Campbell the organiser extraordinaire
Leanne Peart and Kristy Gordan for live and silent auction prize sourcing, setting up and giving out
Hayley Wakefield and her team for working the bar
Emma Donahue and Emma Hamilton for theming the event
Jo James and Kerry Sternbeck on ticketing and tables
Lucy Sherman on entertainment
Maggie Whitnall for dessert platters
Carolina Moore for pushing raffle ticket sales
The PA Executive Team and their support behind the scenes

Bayside Eisteddfod The choir will be competing in the Bayside Eisteddfod at the Moorabbin Town Hall in early August. Handwriting Snippets Finger dexterity- One needs to develop a pincer grasp between the thumb and index fingers in order to hold a pencil well. Pencil Grip Traditionally the pencil should rest in the web space between index and middle fingers. The wrist should be flat providing a point of stability.
The hand should rest on the ring and little fingers. Mature tripod grasp.
An incorrect grip later may lead to:
Cramping and fatigue
Poor legibility of letters
Inability to complete set tasks
Frustration as the child knows what they want to say but cannot get it down
Poor finger dexterity and / or hand strength often leads to a deteriorating grip Farewell My last day at EPS will be Wednesday, 15th June. I have really enjoyed the great teamwork with the staff, PA and School Council. Staff and students have grown in confidence during the last two terms. The staff have curriculum plans and structured processes to continue. Cecilia Stone Acting Principal
EPS Principal Recruitment
The EPS Community will be aware that the EPS School Council and Department of Education have been involved in the recruitment process for the vacancy of Principal, at Elsternwick Primary School. At this stage we have not identified a suitable candidate for this role and the process will continue through into Term 3. We look forward to providing further updates about the leadership of the school for Term 3 and beyond shortly. Regards, Scott Vickers-Willis EPS School Council President
Health News Impetigo A case of Impetigo, which is an infection of the skin and often called School sores, has been reported to the school office. It commonly affects school aged children. It is a contagious skin infection caused by bacteria. The infection is characterised by inflamed blisters that weep and cause crusts. It is quite common near nose and mouth, but also found on arms, legs and face. Sores are not painful, but itchy. A child with Impetigo should be kept home from school until treatment commenced. Sores should be covered with a waterproof dressing. To avoid spread of Infection encourage hand washing and practise good hygiene! Lindy Belotti School Nurse
Take Home Books
Please return all 'Take Home Books' to school ASAP! We are taking this opportunity to stock take all of our 'Take Home Books'. The students will not be bringing home any take home books from the school starting Monday, 20th June till the end of term. We encourage that your child reads their books from their book shelf or from the Library. Rosanna Grosso Literacy Co-Ordinator
Interesting Advice Having great values…. Sometimes children make poor choices, and the thought of family finding out can seem like a fate worse than death. Let your children know that while values are important, you understand the realities and temptations they face. Don’t create a culture where your children are too anxious to come to you and admit they messed up. Hiding your troubles…. If we’re struggling financially or fighting with our spouse, we think our children are better off not knowing. But they suspect and if they don’t know the whole story, they can blow it out of all proportion. Should we pile our own troubles on our child’s shoulders? No, but it doesn’t hurt to be honest about what our concerns are and, more importantly, what we’re doing about it. By sharing what makes us anxious and how we deal with it, we’re modelling practical ways to resolve anxiety. Acknowledgement – Karen Banes
Maths @ EPS Year 1 Maths Update - The Maths Focus is ‘Location’ This work includes using the Language of Location to direct someone from place to place. Maps are created, grid references introduced and students are challenged to draw bird’s eye views and side and front views of models they create.
These students worked in pairs. One drew a ‘secret’ shape on their white board. They then used the ‘language of location’ to guide their partner to draw the same shape on the asphalt with chalk. Shapes were compared.
These students created a Lego City on a grid. They used grid references to describe where their buildings were located. They also drew bird’s eye views, side views and front views of the models they created.
Pirate Maps were created. Using grid references, these students followed the clues to find the treasure - X marks the spot!
This class created a city on a grid. First they made the city with Unifix blocks, then turned it into a bird’s eye view in paper. The students used grid references to locate different buildings and give directions on how to move around the city.
These students are trying to follow their directions from the classroom to the sports centre using the directional language learned in class.
Family Maths Challenge – try these one night around the dinner table
Do you try to avoid the number 13? Is there a Friday 13th every year? Can you work out the pattern? Answer: http://figurethis.nctm.org/challenges/c13/answer.htm Who wins the game? Your team is down by one point. Your teammate, who makes free throws about three-fourths of the time is at the free throw line. She gets a second shot if she makes the first one. Each free throw she makes is worth one point. If there is no time left, what are the chances you win the game without overtime? Answer: http://figurethis.nctm.org/challenges/c19/answer.htm National Council of Teacher of Mathematics, (2004) Retrieved June 3, 2016 from http://figurethis.nctm.org/index.html Erin Downing Numeracy Co-Ordinator
During Year 1 Discovery Time, a lucky group of Year 1 students participated in an incursion funded by a grant from Gould League. The students have made a garden bed in the orchard to attract native bees. Over 2 workshops, students tested the pH balance of the soil, looked for mini-beasts that help the ecosystem and planted the garden bed with local indigenous plants. There were lots of smiling faces. Special thanks to the Year 1 parents who tilled the soil and added compost to enrich the soil on the weekend before planting. Sasha Curtain from Gould League and an EPS parent, facilitated the sessions, giving these keen gardeners a few tips on how to create a garden that will attract native bees. Planting is hard work, positioning, digging, planting and watering, then waiting for the little plants to mature and make a beautiful garden.
