Fort Smith Tower/Razorback Approach Today

As you can tell by our name we take great pride in our University of Arkansas Razorbacks. We have been providing air traffic control in the River Valley since 1951, as well as, the Northwest Arkansas area since 1994. Our new facility was completed in 1999 and houses Fort Smith Tower and Razorback Approach. We currently have 10 operational positions with 8 radar scopes in the TRACON and 2 certified Control Tower Radar Displays (CTRD). All controllers are certified in both the tower and the TRACON. Fort Smith ATCT typically maintains a workforce of up to 35 controllers, , 4 supervisors, 1 staff specialist, 1 contract training specialist and numerous developmentals/CPC’s in training.

With just under 7000 square miles of airspace, Fort Smith ATCT/Razorback Approach is responsible for airspace spanning southern Missouri, west-central Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Razorback Approach airspace is unique in that we work two separate radar areas with separate radar sites. The Fort Smith area utilizes an ASR-11 site and the Fayetteville area utilizes an ASR-9 site. Both areas are associated with ARTS IIE. In the Fort Smith area, we provide both tower and radar services. The Fort Smith Airport consists of crossing runways and the Arkansas Air National Guard’s 188th Fighter

Wing. The 188th consist of a squadron of 26 A-10 Warthogs, known as the Flying Razorbacks. We work three restricted areas and the Hog and Arrowhead Military Operations Areas (MOA) located 10 miles southeast of the airport. These Special Use Areas (SUA) provide a sterilized airspace environment where our local A-10’s and other military aircraft can practice necessary maneuvers for war time duties and contingencies. These areas are associated with nearby Fort Chaffee. Because of the SUA’s and our proximity to several different military pilot training bases, we typically have a steady flow of military traffic along with our scheduled air-taxis/air-carriers and general aviation traffic. In the Fayetteville area we provide radar services for the Northwest Arkansas area and work with four federal contract towers: Northwest Arkansas Regional (XNA), Rogers Municipal (ROG), Springdale Municipal (ASG) and Fayetteville-Drake Executive (FYV). These airports are within twenty miles of each other along with multiple satellite airports and numerous hospitals with helipads. All of our airports in this area have a single runway configuration.

Fort Smith Area Information

Fort Smith, Arkansas’s second largest city, rests gently on the banks of the Arkansas River, and is nestled in the River Valley, between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. Fort Smith takes great pride in uniquely combining the history of the “Old West” with the gentle charm of the antebellum “Old South,” offering travelers of all ages a fun and exciting glimpse into its distinctive history through restorations, attractions, museums and festivals.

The scrappy border town of Fort Smith grew up around the area’s first frontier fort which was, established in 1817 to promote peace between warring Indian tribes of the Osage and Cherokee. Remains of the first fort lie within the Fort Smith National Historic Site perched on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. At this site, you can stop and learn about the history of the Trail of Tears and find out about the Civil War in Arkansas, visit a replica of the famed Fort Smith gallows where 80 men were ordered hanged by Hanging Judge Parker, or enjoy an interpretation of Native American history in the area and displays highlighting the U.S. Marshals and deputies who rode for Judge Parker to protect the West.

Make your first stop a tour of Miss Laura’s Visitor Center, an old restored brothel listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then enjoy the five Fort Smith museums, including the Fort Smith Museum of History, the Fort Smith Trolley Museum, the Clayton House, the Darby House and the Fort Smith Art Center. Ride an authentic electric trolley, take a nostalgic journey on a trolley bus or discover

the beautiful restored homes and buildings lining the streets of the 22-block Belle Grove Historic District, which reflects an architectural span of 130 years.

The west end of Garrison Avenue, our main street, is a shopper’s paradise with the discovery of one-of-a-kind antiques and unique crafts and a family-friendly “retro” amusement space called “West End Park.” This art deco attraction features a vintage carousel and Ferris wheel, along with meals in a genuine antique rail car or concessions from a classic double-decker bus.

The Fort Smith Convention Center began hosting events in January 2001. The Center is located in the heart of historic downtown Fort Smith, within walking distance of the National Cemetery, National Historic Site and adjacent Fort Smith Museum. The Convention Center is also a short distance from River Front Park, antique shops and a variety of excellent downtown restaurants.
