Part 5- The Suttler

Soldiers needed to buy items to make their life easier and better.  They couldn't go to a store in town, as there was no town or store.  Instead, they

went to the suttler who had a store within the fort.  The women camp followers and the Haudenosaunee would have stopped by to buy necessities for life. 

The soldiers earned 6 and 2/3 dollars a month, and much of it was spent at the suttlers.

The Suttler tried to stock what the soldiers would want.

The suttler was also the post office.  Notice the colored sealing wax thatkeeps the mail closed and private.

Notice the hook in the floor.  The hook opens a trap doorwhich opens to a root cellar for keeping vegetables and fruits

fresh throughout the year.
