Fort Myers Beach Yacht Club History

Officers elected for 2012 were: Pete Oiderma, Commodore, FernToomey, Vice Commodore; Don Czech, Rear Commodore; Len Ebright, Treasurer; Carole Burns, Secretary, and Sharon Fell, Fleet Captain. The remainder of the Board of Directors consisted of: Immediate Past Commodore Tom Swanbeck, Jim Vaigl, Tom Buckard and Kathy Buckard.

For the fifth year in a row, the Commodore’s Ball was held at LexingtonCountry Club.

Meetings continued to be held at the American Legion Post 274 on San Carlos Island with the catered dinner price reduced significantly from its previous $14.00 per person. The four summer meetings (June thruSeptember) were held at Parrot Key, Lazy Flamingo, Big Game andFletcher’s restaurants.

Our membership increased by 21 members over the 2011 roster. Thatwas an increase of 18% over the 2011 base roster membership count of 114.

Total members = 135Ft Myers Beach = 74 members (55%)Cape Coral = 30 members (22%)All other areas = 31 members (23%)

68% of members were year round residents32% of members were part time residents

Our fleet was comprised of 59 boats (an increase of 9 boats from the2011 roster).

Former member and Past Commodore A. Lee Clifford passed away inOctober. He served as our Commodore for two years – 1995 and 1996.

Our web site, which was created in 2008, continued to improve thanks in large part to Club Webpage Coordinator Drew Dolak and P/C TomSwanbeck, along with ideas and input from our Board of Directors.

P/C Dick Short continued as our Newsletter Editor through March, afterwhich Dee Vaigl assumed that responsibility.

The special committee ‘Dolphins in the Pantry’ continued to collect foodand funds for donation to the Harry Chapin Food Bank of SW Florida. Over thepast year, 250 pounds of non-perishable food itemswere collected and delivered. In addition, at themembership meeting on November 16, CommitteeChairperson Dee Vaigl presented a super sizedcheck in the amount of $1,500 to the charity.

Our Memorial Day Service-at-Sea ceremony was covered by a photojournalist from the News-Press. In addition to writing a good article, shecaptured a picture of one of our guests placing flowers on the Gulf of Mexicothat was so graphic the photo won “Picture of the Week” and appearedabove the masthead of the News-Press’ front page. How appropriate thatthe guest placing the flowers was an active Southern Baptist Minister.

In October, our Webpage Coordinator, Drew Dolak, put together a Past Commodores’ Appreciation Dinner. This was the first time any of our current members could recall holding a special event to honor our Past Commodores. There were 12 P/Cs present, of which 5 were still activemembers. Present at the dinner, in chronological order, from most seniorto most recent service, were P/Cs Bob Jacoby (1987), Phyllis Havey, FredRosenstrauch, Jim Goodman, Connie Miller, Dominic Bottari, Howard Harrison, Dick Short, Tom Sloane, Chris Christensen, Bob Owen and Tom Swanbeck.

Treasurer Len Ebright reported a year end Net Worth of $33,884.03.
