Match Preview
It has been years in the making, but at long last professional soccer kicks off for Ottawa Fury FC in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday evening against one of the most storied franchise in the history of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Addressing his players earlier in the week, Head Coach Marc Dos Sanots said “we might be an expansion team, but we are not expansion players.” As a team, Fury FC are new to their opposition, but to a man opposing coaches and players are familiar with several names – especially those who have played on the North American stage. While some of the international talents maybe unknown, their resume’s showcase the experience and talents they bring to the squad.
Captained by Clonmel, Ireland native Richie Ryan, Fury FC boast experience and depth in both leadership and ability. Alternate captains Nicki Paterson and Omar Jarun both carry with them USL PRO experience while Siniša Ubiparipovic and Tom Heinemann bring their fair share of MLS and NASL experience to Ottawa.
A trio of Brazilians should prove invaluable to Dos Santos’ squad. Forward Oliver Minatel might be 22 years of age, but brings with him a wealth of experience and along with fellow countryman Vini Dantas should help shoulder the offensive expectations that have been placed on target-man Tom Heinemann. The third Brazilian threat who will spend time at both ends of the pitch is left back Maykon. He helped AEL Limassol capture the Cypriot First Division Championship which provided the Brazilian defender with UEFA Champions League experience. Another international who will make his NASL debut this season is Ghanaian midfielder Hamza Elias – a quick and dynamic player, Elias adds depth to an already deep position in Ottawa’s line-up.
Devala Gorrick is expected to take the lead in goal for Fury FC, but has healthy competition in Marcel DeBellis and Chad Bush pushing him on a daily basis. Gorrick came to Ottawa after spending the 2013 season with IK Frej in Sweden following three standout seasons in the Thai Premier League. In front of him expect to see Mason Trafford line-up next to Jarun at center back with former Columbus Crew draft pick Drew Beckie arming the right back position and Maykon on the left.
The position where Ottawa has ample experience is their coaching staff led by Marc Dos Santos. A man who is no stranger to this League knows his opposition and what it takes to win at this level. Sprinkle in the experience of his assistant Martin Nash who had a storied career at this level and the successes that goalkeeper coach David Bellemare has on his resume and this All-Canadian coaching staff should prove a valuable resource for the players.
Like many teams in the NASL, the Strikers made many changes during the off-season. Günter Kronsteiner’s side has 14 players returning for the 2014 campaign that includes imposing center back Sefan Antonijevic and midfielder Martin Nuñez who led the Strikers in scoring in 2013.
Kronsteiner took over mere weeks before the start of the Fall Season last year improving the Strikers side after a dismal Spring Season. Over the off-season, the Austrian native turned to Europe for two key additions with a wealth of Bundesliga experience in goalkeeper Oka Nikolov who spent nearly 20 years at Eintract Frankfurt and forward Marius Ebbers who made a name for himself at FC St. Pauli. The experience of this duo plus the addition of midfielder Chris Nurse from FC Edmonton see’s the Strikers a much different side from last season with this added depth and experience.
With the NASL split-season format and an early break in the season avoiding matches during the FIFA World Cup, the 9-game Spring Season should make for a competitive one. The winner of the Spring Season is guaranteed a spot in the 4-team Championship and earning home-field advantage for at least the semifinals.
It was be a furious start to the season for Fury FC who will play six games in the opening 21 days of the season including a home-and-home series against FC Edmonton in the preliminary round of the Amway Canadian Championship. Expect the depth of Dos Santos’ squad to be tested during the opening three weeks of the season.
After Saturday’s season opener in Fort Lauderdale, Fury FC will return home to prepare for the arrival of professional soccer in the Nation’s Capital when Ottawa hosts Minnesota United FC in their home opener on April 19th.

FC COACHING STAFF
MARC DOS SANTOS – HEAD COACH
Born in Montreal, Dos Santos is best known for
leading the Montreal Impact to the United Soccer
Leagues (USL) First Division title in his first
year at the helm. Dos Santos joins Fury FC after
spending the last two years coaching in Brazil.
After coaching the U20 team of FC Primeira
Camisa in the 2012 Copa Sao Paolo, the Montreal
native was invited to join SE Palmeiras, one of
the most successful clubs in Brazilian football,
where he coached the U15 team to their first ever
Brazilian Championship (2012).
In five years with the Impact, Dos Santos led
the Impact Reserves (Trois-Rivière Attak) to the
Open Canada Cup Championship in 2007 and the Canadian Soccer League
regular season championship in 2008. Appointed as Assistant Coach to
John Limniatis in 2008, he helped the Impact win the Nutrilite (now Amway)
Canadian Championship and reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF
Champions League. Dos Santos was appointed interim head coach in May 2009
and later that season saw the interim tag removed as he led the Impact to the
USL Championship. In 2010, the Impact reached the semifinals in USSF Division
2 (now NASL). Dos Santos would resign in June 2011 during the Impact’s final
season in the NASL before they made the jump to Major League Soccer.
Dos Santos returns to the NASL where he was one of the original eight coaches
in 2011 with the Montreal Impact. Dos Santos holds a UEFA ‘A’ License and has
had internships in Brazil with Luiz Felipe Scolari at SE Palmeiras, in England with
Chelsea FC and at Portuguese clubs FC Porto, Boavista FC and SC Beira Mar. The
Canadian-born Dos Santos holds both Canadian and Portuguese citizenships and
is fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

CLUB HISTORYOn June 20, 2011 the North American Soccer League (NASL) and then
Commissioner David Downs announced that Ottawa, ON had been awarded
an expansion franchise granted to the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group
(OSEG). Ottawa Fury Soccer Club Owner and CEO and OSEG Partner John Pugh
was named President of the new franchise and the building began. Eighteen
months later, on February 26, 2013, following a name selection campaign that
received over 4,000 submissions, Mr. Pugh announced that the official name of
the franchise would be Ottawa Fury FC.
With a name in place, Ottawa Fury FC would begin to build its brand; its
season ticket base and most importantly its staff. On May 23, 2013 Mr. Pugh
named Marc Dos Santos as the first head coach in franchise history. Born in
Montreal, Dos Santos is best known for leading the Montreal Impact to the
United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division title in his first year at the helm.
Three days after naming Dos Santos as head coach, Fury FC unveiled another
key component to its organization – the official logo. With season ticket holders
and supporters groups in attendance, Fury FC unveiled its logo on May 26, 2013 –
a traditional soccer shield design that houses the name Ottawa Fury FC as well
as a flame that will serve as a symbol of the club.
In the months to follow, Fury FC built a strong technical staff that includes
assistant coach Martin Nash, goalkeeper coach David Bellemare and technical
director Phillip Dos Santos.
Prior to being granted an NASL franchise, the organization existed as the Ottawa
Fury Soccer Club - one of the most recognizable names at the development
level across North America. Founded as a W-League team in 2000, John Pugh
purchased the Fury W-League franchise in 2002 and would spend the next
decade building one of the most respected youth academies in North America, a
successful PDL program that has seen players move on to the professional ranks
and the W-League’s most storied franchise that would capture a long sought-
after North American Championship in 2012. The Ottawa Fury Soccer Club also
boasted several grassroots, skill development and community programs that
continue under the Fury FC banner.

OWNERSHIPOttawa Fury FC are owned by the Ottawa
Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG),
a partnership of five local business and
community leaders — John Ruddy, Jeff Hunt, Bill Shenkman, John Pugh and
Roger Greenberg. On June 20, 2011, OSEG was awarded a North American
Soccer League (NASL) franchise by then NASL Commissioner David Downs.
ABOUT OSEGOSEG, in partnership with the City of Ottawa, is creating a new downtown
sports and entertainment district called Lansdowne, a “go-to” destination
for all residents and visitors to the city, offering live sports and entertainment,
a shopping and entertainment district, condominium living and a major
new urban park.
OSEG was initially founded to re-establish CFL football in Ottawa; however,
the city’s stadium required major renovations which were not feasible without
a comprehensive plan for the revitalization of the entire 48-acre site. The
Lansdowne Partnership Plan, which offered a vision for a new, vibrant and
transformed Lansdowne, was developed and first presented to Ottawa City
Council on September 2, 2009. Over the three next years, with significant
input from the general public, the plan was refined and fully approved for
implementation on October 11, 2012.
Lansdowne will feature TD Place, a 24,000 seat stadium for football, soccer,
concerts and other major events with a refurbished 9,862 seat arena for the
Ottawa 67’s (OHL) and community hockey, other arena sports, mid-size concerts
and other events. The district will also feature two condominium towers,
townhomes, a 360,000 Sq. Ft. shopping/restaurant district, an office tower,
1,300 underground parking spaces and an 18-acre urban park. OSEG owns and
operates the CFL’s Ottawa REDBLACKS, the NASL’s Ottawa Fury FC, and the
OHL’s Ottawa 67’s hockey team. OSEG will also manage TD Place and the
mixed-use areas and facilities on the site.
OSEG Owners: John Ruddy, Jeff Hunt, Bill Shenkman, John Pugh and Roger Greenberg.
