Board Chairman Jamey Webster led a special dedication for Second Mile’s health clinic, which has been renamed Pat McWaters Health Clinic. Pat McWaters volun- teered in almost every area of Second Mile for more than 10 years, with a particular pas- sion for the clinic. She passed away in April after fighting heroically against stage IV breast cancer. The decision to move was announced April 2012 and construction began in the sum- mer. The facility opened for services Feb. 1. At 15,000 square-feet, the building is an expanded ver- sion of Second Mile’s previous facilities and includes a ware- house to store donated goods, a food pantry, clothing room, medical and dental clinic and counseling offices. Second Second Mile Mission moves to new facility in Missouri City BY BARBARA FULENWIDER Misinformation about Mis- souri City’s charging a fee for fire equipment used in rare circum- stances has Mayor Allen Owen and city councilmen fired up. At the Feb. 4 council meet- ing, city council unanimously approved a fee schedule to help the city recover costs for such ex- pensive work as a gasoline tanker fire or rescuing someone pinned in their vehicle after a crash. Since Feb. 4, Owen said, “There are all kinds of misin- formation out there in the media about this issue. People are saying we are going to charge for police calls and everything else. “These fees are strictly for wrecks that involve fire engines called to the scene and used for unusual services. It’s similar to someone having to pay much more for emergency room servic- es compared to going to a doctor’s office. In the ER you get special equipment, special staff, etc. “We are not the first city to do this -- more and more are doing it. They charge and have been,” Owen said. The city ordinance, which becomes effective on March 1, is the result of a staff presentation to council in September 2011 after multiple city fire trucks and emergency vehicles responded to a major gasoline tanker fire in front of city hall. Because the city was unable to recuperate all of the emergency service costs it incurred, council began reviewing proactive ways to keep from being in the red for such again. The result was a fee schedule for fire and rescue services with the police depart- ment involved only if an accident requires the city’s dive team. It is made up of members from both the fire and police departments. No fee will be charged if a fire truck is called and after arriving at the scene it’s determined that it isn’t needed. Another mainstay of the pro- gram to recuperate costs for cer- tain fire services is it won’t impact residents. City council mandated that citizens will never get a bill but their insurance company will. Paying for such emergency services is part of insurance poli- cies but if the insurance company refuses to pay the city, Missouri City will not pursue the fee for services rendered. Also, if an individual at fault does not have insurance or a pro- vider does not pay the city’s bill in full, the city will not pursue the matter, according to Owen. The insurance provider of any motorist at fault in an accident, vehicle fire or illegal burning would be assessed the fees only if a claim is opened by a motorist or a company. If the insurance provider does not pay the fees, the individual will not be billed. Research from various insur- ance companies shows that insur- ance providers historically have not increased premiums based on the programs that charge fees for extraordinary services. Other Texas towns that have instituted a fee schedule for such include Bellaire, Channelview, Georgetown, San Angelo, Mar- shal, Bryan and College Station. City spokeswoman Stacy Walker said there are other towns in the state that charge fees for extraordinary emergency services, but “we used these towns because they compare in terms of how these cities have helped recoup these types of costs and also why it would be beneficial to home- owners and visitors to have such a program in place. With this in place, the onus won’t fall on the back of the taxpayer,” she said. Walker said there’s no estimate of how much the fees may bring in and anything anyone has read or heard regarding such would be “simply a guess. The overall impetus here is trying to be pro- active in terms of cost recovery in the event we have another gas tanker fire.” City feels heat over incendiary report Mile will continue to serve Fort Bend County residents in need. “This is an incredible time for Second Mile as we open this new facility and continue to meet critical needs of our neighbors. At the same time, we are expanding our programs that go directly into the needi- est neighborhoods to get to know and help our neighbors in need,” said Executive Director Sarah White. Second Mile has served Fort Bend County 23 years provid- ing food, clothing, health care and other basic needs for indi- viduals in crisis. “The Murphy Road loca- tion served Second Mile and the community very well,” said Board Chairman Jamey Webster. “As the years passed by, it was time to make serious renovations or look at options for a new facility. We looked at what Second Mile could afford to pay, and with a great deal of research and prayer, we were able to lease a new facility built from the ground up with our needs in mind.”

Incumbent Don Smith, rep-resenting District B, fi led for re-election to the Missouri City City Council.

During his announcement of plans to run in the upcoming May 11 general election, Don Smith thanked the citizens of Missouri City and his District B constituents for the opportu-nity to have served on council for over eight years.

“It has been an absolute honor and a privilege to be an intricate part of the growth of this great city,” said Council Member Smith.

The only veteran and Demo-crat on city council, Smith and his family have resided in Mis-souri City for 34½ years. He is president of his HOA, which recently gained the approval of the majority of 552 home-owners to build a mile and half perimeter fence around his sub-division.

The fence proved to be an improvement to the neigh-

borhood and the surrounding communities.

Don Smith is a member of American Legion Post 294, Texas Parkway Alliance, NAACP, A. Phillip Randolf Institute, and the Covenant Glen United Methodist Church, Men of Promise Choir.

“Over the years, my efforts have focused on elevating Missouri City’s quality of life and providing adequate fi rst re-sponders personnel and equip-ment. Some results are the newly installed Police Annex on Texas Parkway ... poten-tially the fi rst of several instal-

lations, the Texas Parkway and Cartwright road improvements, and the landscaping and LED sign installation in front of city hall.”

Don Smith’s plans for the next two years include: (1) bring Texas Parkway/Cart-wright corridor merchants and the customer they serve together, so as to gain an un-derstanding of needs.

“Dialog to better understand customers’ needs seems to me, the beginning of good market-ing,” says Smith.

(2) complete an installation of a veterans’ memorial,

(3) vigorously lobby for the renovation of City Hall.

In most cities, towns, and villages, the city hall buildings are beautiful focal points--a place of pride ... “we shouldn’t be different”, and (4) vigor-ously encourage citizens to get involved. The talent residing in Missouri City is tremendous.

“My plans are to tap this pool and encourage civic involve-ment.”

By RODNEY GRIFFINI believe, the more things

change, the more they are the same. Taxes are higher, va-cancies along the Texas Park-way and Cartwright corridors continue to exist. The newly passed “crash tax” as dubbed by CNN, has made our great city, arguably the laughing stock of the world.

The esplanades along Texas Parkway, are perceived as turn-ing the parkway into contra-fl ow lanes for the convenience of Highway 6 commuters, and many believe, at the expense of communities of color. This has to stop!

No longer take seriously, those who link in the shadows of governance, representing no one, but themselves, and who are merely stooges for the rich and powerful!

Change comes from the bottom up, never from the top down( i.e. the Arab Spring, , closer to home, The Afford-able Health Care Act (Obama Care)).

Having a mathematics de-gree from the University of Texas at Austin, working at a senior level in a council manager form of government, and running my own business for years makes me uniquely qualifi ed to serve Missouri City and District A. I am a problem solver.

I understand keeping our community moving in the right direction, having lived here for 33 years. I am the Husband of Jan West, graduate of Rice University.

I am the father of four, Eliza-beth Bert, a University of Texas at Austin alum, William, a Harvard Law Alum, Omari, a father of three, and Brook a Columbia U alum.

I am the grandfather of seven: Jamal, Jawan, Jasmine, Chase, Rose, Amaria, Khyla.

I continue to campaign tire-lessly for the revitalization of Texas Parkway. I have served our community as the Presid-ing Election Judge for many terms.

Presently I serve Precinct 2059 as the Democratic Chair and on the State Democratic Executive Committee in Aus-tin.

H e r e I w a s t h e f i r s t State(Texas) party offi cial to endorse then candidate Obama for president(Feb, 22, 2007). During the 2010 census, I made

sure that every person in our community was counted.

Texas Parkway is the gate-way to Missouri City. How it looks determines what busi-nesses move here. On Texas Parkway there are more nail shops, chicken joints, liquor stores and now, dollar stores per square mile than anywhere else in the city.

I believe city boards and commissions should refl ect the 60 percent citizens of color, 41 percent African American, 14 percent Latino, and 5 percent Asian.

I believe those who do busi-ness with the city should look like the ethnic diversity of the city. This does not mean, the politically, or well connected should get the lion’s share of the contracts, regardless of color! Hire those who can and will do the job. They are out there. Affi rmatively, seek them!

I am a retired businessman,a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, BA mathemat-ics. I am a graduate of the Fort Bend Chamber Leadership Forum(1996), Organization for Action, and National Afri-can American Leaders( Black Americans for Obama) Elec-tion 2012.

Rodney Griffin is a candi-date for Missouri City City Council, District A.

By MICHAEL GIBSONThe Republican Party of

Fort Bend County is celebrat-ing another successful election cycle this past November.

Across the county, we in-creased our margins of vic-tory. Republicans are winning because they have the winning values.

Republicans hold fi rm to the principles of:

•Smaller Government•Lower Taxes•Personal Responsibility

and Accountability•Pro-Business policies that

encourage growth•Free Enterprise system•Immigration reform•Equal Opportunity for all,

not equal outcomesMy vision for this county

is to grow the party to encom-pass all conservatives regard-less of their race, religion, na-tional origin or age.

We must reach out to the non-traditional conserva-tives with our message of real change based upon the efforts of the individual not a handout from the government.

We believe that the family is the foundation upon which this country was built. The

By CAROLYN BOWDENA HAPPY SHERRY PARTY:

Approximately a dozen ladies gathered at the Club for what was intended to be a “Get Acquaint-ed Party”. After a few rounds of sherry one of the ladies invited everyone to her home where the conversation changed to form-ing a Ladies golf group. In no time they had picked the day to play each week and then decided what would be the requirements for players to join them.

WOMENS GOLF ASSO-CIATION: Initially, play was quite relaxed. I was told that their version of a “Master’s Green Jacket” was a Green T-shirt. The “Lame Duck” win-ner went home with a “plucked rubber chicken”. Then they joined INTERCLUB and things got “serious”. When they won the “Team Trophy”, which was a beautiful silver punch bowl, the pressure was on to keep it at Quail Valley and they did win it often! INTERCLUB became a way of increasing your circle of friends with other Golf Club WGAs in this area. With the 1973 PGA Tournament on the horizon, the Quail Valley golfers were encouraged to volunteer to help. Some of the volunteer positions, such as being a “scor-er”, meant you had to know the Rules. That is when each play day became like a major tourna-ment. No longer were the ladies allowed to play like “the men do on weekends”. Forget “bump-ing the ball around” and “just give me a (“score number”) on this hole” when they got in trou-ble.

THE NINE HOLE PLAY-ERS: This was such a fun group. It was comprised of la-dies who had never played golf or their handicap did not qualify them to move up to play with the Eighteen Hole Players. There was a wide range of ages which worked well for those who had to fi nd baby sitters to the play-ers whose stamina declined at the end of nine holes. There was always an Eighteen Hole Player with us to make sure we followed the rules and to answer any questions. Frequent com-ments were made like: “Golf is such fun because the course is so beautiful and there are no phones ringing” (before days of cell phones) Periodically, the players who started on #1 would be sur-prised by a sprinkler and rows of grass clippings that stopped the roll of their ball. (In the begin-ning maintenance workers were not professional grounds keep-ers. They just mowed and top dressed and there was no one to follow the mower with a rake.) The Pro Shop always insisted that this was strictly coinciden-tal but the ladies weren’t so sure since it never happened to the men.

FIRST CAN-CAN TOUR-NAMENT: (Leave it to the women to “mess” with tradi-tions that were “sacred” to men and their golf game.) The la-dies came up with the idea of a “mixed” tournament. “Mixed” meant men and women playing on the same team in a scramble tournament. One man made the statement: “I do NOT play golf with women!” Then other men “lined up” behind him. The or-

ganizers of the tournament put their heads together and at that moment the men should have re-alized that they would be on the losing end.

THE WOMEN’S IDEA: The idea was to pick the teams using four coffee cans. The cans were labeled A, B, C and D (one per fl ight). The fi rst three cans were fl ighted by handicap. The fourth can did not require a handicap. The names of the players who were signed up for the tournament were carefully placed in a stack inside each can. The A player would draw from B, C, and D cans. They were to take whatever name was on top of the stack in the can. (This was done by the Pro Shop.) They discovered they were short one woman player. So they recruited someone who had “never” played golf and put her name on the top of the stack inside the D can. Then “rigged” the A and D cans so that the man who had stated he did not want to play golf with a wom-an drew the woman who was a “non-player”. It worked out just fi ne because the non-player just chipped and putted.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TOURNAMENT: At the end of the tournament and all players gathered in the club for awards, everyone was surprised by the entrance of a man dressed in gym shorts, high top sneakers, a tux shirt and a tux coat with “opera tails”. Every year after that, the same man would come dressed in costume. Sometimes it would be a Disney character and one year it was Uncle Sam or a repeat of the tux outfi t. It was ALWAYS GREAT FUN!

THE BEGINNING: A few residents began to move to Quail Valley in 1970 and at that time there was only a Nine Hole Golf Course fi nished. The next nine were under construction. There were not many golfers. It was not unusual for the Head Pro to call Quail Valley Golf Club members who were living in Quail Valley and those who were not yet living in Quail Val-ley, and invite them to come to Quail Valley the following Sat-urday morning for a game of golf. His goal was to put a few foursomes together for a fun day of play. This became an oppor-tunity for the men to get to know their “new” neighbors. There was BIG excitement when the second nine holes opened and the players did not have to re-peat the fi rst nine.

MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIA-TION: As new residents moved into Quail Valley, several of the original residents talked to the Golf Pro about organizing a

more “formal” MGA that would schedule tournaments during the year and promote entertaining events for the residents. A Com-mittee of FIVE came together, working with the Golf Pro and thus the Men’s Golf Association formed in 1971. The organizer who became the fi rst MGA Pres-ident was with a major oil com-pany and lived in the El Dorado section.

SLOW PLAY – NO PROB-LEM: On occasions, for some unknown reason (lost golf balls, rescuing animals, etc.) golf play would slow for some groups. One day a foursome had several players who got bored at waiting. Instead of complaining one man simply laid down in the middle of the fairway, feet propped up and there he relaxed. There was never any impatience, just play-ers relaxing and having a good time out with their buddies.

DOG RESCUE: A player hit his ball to the left side of green # 3 (now #12 El Dorado). When he walked to his ball he saw an old dog lying at the bottom of the ditch on a drain pipe. The dog was conscious but obvi-ously not mobile. He could not make his way up the drainage ditch. The foursome stopped play and carefully removed the dog from the ditch. One man in the group put the dog on his cart and headed home while the other players continued. The “Good Samaritan Player” took the dog to a local vet in the Quail Val-ley Subdivision who recognized the dog and said he had been missing about one week and was very dehydrated. He notifi ed the owners and, after the dog recovered he was returned to his home.

THE RHUBARB: One of the oldest traditions enjoyed by the Men’s Golf Association was the Annual Rhubarb that began in 1972. Without exception, on the fi rst Saturday in December all MGA members were invited to participate in the Annual Rhu-barb. It was and continues to be a highlight of the year. It began with a fantastic FREE breakfast, election of offi cers and everyone then plays in a typical scramble. The players are divided into two teams. The team that loses pays a dollar amount that covers part of the tournament cost. In addition, there were tee gifts for everyone. There were always holes with special conditions, for example, you must hit into the sand before going on the green. Once, a golf-er who had a high handicap, hit the ball on the green—not in the sand. It was his best shot of the day and could not count. He was defl ated! This is a great tradi-tion enjoyed by everyone. In the early days “THE RHUBARB” fi lled up both courses. Research did not reveal why “THE RHU-BARB” was chosen to be the name of this tournament. One Webster defi nition is that “rhu-barb” is a slang word, meaning “worthless stuff”. With that in mind, maybe because this was not traditional golf, but instead there were holes with “off the wall” challenges?

LETTER: Kudos to Missouri City police

By STEVE BROWNIt’s that time of the year

again when we citizens do our patriotic duty of paying fed-eral and local taxes. This is also the time of year when our State Legislature decides how best to spend our hard earned money.

Unfortunately for us, Gov-ernor Rick Perry has deter-mined that our dollars would be better spent subsidizing health care coverage in Cali-fornia or Arizona but not here at home. That is exactly what will happen if he refuses to allow Texas to participate in the Medicaid Expansion com-ponent of the Affordable Care Act.

Here’s how it works. In 1986, President Ronald Rea-gan signed into law an emer-gency medical treatment bill that prohibits health care pro-viders from denying service to people in desperate need because they might not have an ability to pay. No civilized society should ever stand by and allow anyone to die be-cause an emergency room denies them care. As a result, health care providers are ob-ligated to treat people even if they can’t pay. In Texas, over 6.1 million people lack health care insurance. That means when one of them eventually gets sick, and subsequently receives treatment, someone else will have to pick up the bill. That “someone” is the millions of Texas taxpayers.

Medicaid expansion en-sures that more people will have access to health care that will help to prevent, diagnose and manage illnesses as op-posed to treating them in an emergent care environment. Treatment in hospital emer-gency rooms is 3 times more

expensive than in a doctor’s offi ce.

By rejecting Medicaid ex-pansion, our state is allowing our tax dollars to pay for the uninsured in other states but not the people in our commu-nities.

Under the Medicaid ex-pansion plan, Texas would receive back $100 billion dol-lars that we taxpayers will send to Washington over the next 10 years. In return, the state would be responsible for about $15 billion over that same period. That’s a pretty good deal, and explains why the majority of states have opted to participate in the Medicaid expansion program. That includes six recent defec-tions by outspoken Republi-can governors.

Medicaid expansion is more than just care given to the sick. An infusion of $100 billion into Texas’ economy also has a dynamic economic impact on local businesses.

A recent study by Texas Impact and Methodist Health-care Ministries of South Texas

found that the economic im-pact of federal dollars re-cir-culating in our economy could result in $6.7 billion private sector dollars in 2014 and over $22 billion by 2017. Simi-larly, health care related jobs would increase from 71,500 in 2014 to over 200,000 in 2017. This dynamic economic impact would eventually add $1.8 billion to the state’s cof-fers and $2.5 billion to local governments.

Fort Bend County’s un-compensated healthcare costs totaled more than $30 million in 2011. Under Medicaid ex-pansion, by 2016 Fort Bend would receive an estimated $110 million in federal dollars injected into our local econo-my to help care for the unin-sured. That means communi-ties like Missouri City, which has no hospital, could soon be home to not only hospitals but potentially expansive medical centers as more of its residents have an ability to pay for the care that they receive.

In the end, Texas taxpay-ers like you and I are paying for the uninsured right now. Walking away from this deal wouldn’t lower our health in-surance premiums, reduce our property taxes or improve the quality of life for the countless children and adults currently uninsured. Instead, families in the states that opt into this program would reap the ben-efi ts of having my taxes dol-lars help insure their sick, and become an engine for their lo-cal economic growth.

Let’s leave politics out of this debate and fi nally do what’s best for Texas – and Texas’ taxpayers.

(Steve Brown is the Chair-man of the Fort Bend County Democratic Party. )

To the Editor:In view of a recent article

in local newspaper, (impugn-ing Missouri City as a crime capital) I just wanted to voice my own support for the efforts of the police and the police chief’s dedication to his job and what it has meant for resi-dents like me in Missouri City.

I haven’t seen that the City has a “really bad gang prob-lem it can’t control,” and even if it did, the police chief would be the man I would choose to lead the City through it and

past it. Whatever gang activity ex-

ists in the City, it defi nitely hasn’t spilled into my neigh-borhood or any other First Colony neighborhood that I know about. I’m sure that the chief’s efforts have helped my section of town to remain rel-atively crime-free.

Having said that, I did want to voice my concerns about the department not being funded as much as it should be. Regardless of the tax or other political ef-

fects, Missouri City needs to have an adequate number of patrolmen, detectives, support staff, and equipment to make sure that it has the tools nec-essary to deal effectively with any crime issue that may arise. If MCPD is having trouble dealing with gang issues in the City (and what City depart-ment in the nation does not) due to staffi ng issues, I feel it is the direct responsibility of the City Council and Mayor to rectify that situation. Resi-dents of Missouri City should

not be facing serious crime issues in their neighborhoods based purely on the lack of patrol offi cers, detectives, and other police personnel that are focused on the problem.

Additionally, the effective-ness of police department is well-known. I would defi nite-ly be in favor of large across the board pay increases based purely on that fact.

Whatever budget issues the City may have, the prop-er functioning of the depart-ment at adequate manpower to population levels in our City should not be affected. If that involves tax increases for our

Medicaid expansion: A good deal for Texas’ taxpayers

attack on our economy is hav-ing devastating effects on our families causing both husband and wife to work, leaving our children to be either raised by our schools (which is not their primary function) or leaving them unsupervised. Many families have split over the stress created by the hard eco-nomic times.

The only way to get our economy going is growth and that will not happen until gov-ernment gets out of the way of entrepreneurs and quits chang-ing the rules by which busi-ness is regulated.

Our immigrant and minor-ity communities in Fort Bend have been key drivers in our economic engine.

They have displayed the entrepreneurial spirit that gave birth to our nation and state. We need to reward this by al-lowing them to keep more of their hard earned money to invest in job-creating busi-nesses.

A video featuring fi ve mem-

bers of the local community including Daniel Wong, For-mer Sugar Land City Coun-cilman, explaining why they are Republican was debuted at their Lincoln-Reagan Din-ner on February 1.

The video featured an Indo-American, Chinese-American, Hispanic-Amer-ican, Afro-American and a 14-year-old Jewish American girl.

I am committed to imple-menting a pro-growth agenda for the party in Fort Bend County.

The Republican Party came under attack for choosing for-mer Congressman Allen West as a speaker.

Some in the Democratic Party think the constitution was written only to protect their rights. They scream if we speak out against their positions claiming “Racism, Bigotry” and many other emotional charges. Yet they tried to get the City of Sugar Land to stop us from having someone speak at a private event on private property.

Republicans, by the Demo-crats’ defi nition, should not enjoy the most basic of con-stitutional protections, free-dom of speech.

We apparently do not war-ranty the right to assemble peacefully either.

We respect the constitu-tional rights of all even if we do not agree with their posi-tions or policies.

(Mike Gibson is chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County.)

City residents, so be it. I wanted to commend the

police chief for the efforts made by his department and himself to keep crime levels down in our City.

My wife and I sincerely thank you for your dedication.

Robin HicksActing City Secretary

State Rep. Rick Miller has joined the House Manufacturing Caucus, a legislative caucus of the Texas House of Representa-tives, set to focus on the issues facing manufacturers in the state.

“Manufactured goods account for 93 percent of all Texas ex-ports and Texas has held the distinction as the number one exporting state in the U.S. for seven consecutive years. We want to keep Texas thriving and producing quality products made in our state,” said House Manufacturing Caucus Chair Jim Murphy (R-Houston).

Texas manufacturers contrib-uted $192 billion to the Texas economy in 2011 and one-third of all corporate taxes collected by state and local governments.

“Broad-based, low-rate taxes, reliable, affordable energy, a focus on infrastructure, a ready workforce, effi cient permitting and smart incentives that attract investment and fuel research and

development are all part of the equa-tion to keep manufac tu r -ing strong and to keep Texas on top,” said Tony Bennett, President of the Texas Asso-ciation of Manufacturers.

“If the Legislature is success-ful in maintaining the competi-tive edge that makes Texas a great place to do business, the state will continue to prosper.”

The House Manufacturing Caucus will provide educational opportunities and information on policy issues important to the manufacturing sector.

In addition, the House Manu-facturing Caucus will also work with other caucuses to identify, research, and build coalitions to help resolve social and infra-structure issues to ensure that

Texas remains competitive and attracting new business to the state.

The Caucus will help to edu-cate its members on the impact of proposed legislation on manufac-turing.

“This state’s manufacturing in-dustry is driving our state econo-my through innovative technolo-gies and signifi cant economic investment and we want to see that continue,” Miller said.

RECENT CHANGES IN THE PROPERTY TAX CODE NOW REQUIRE PURCHASERS OF TAX SALE PROPERTY TO HAVE A STATEMENT FROM THE FORT BEND COUNTY TAX ASSESSOR-COLLECTOR CERTIFYING THAT THE PERSON/FIRM/COMPANY PURCHASING PROPERTY AT A TAX SALE OWES NO DELINQUENT PROPERTY TAXES TO ANY TAXING ENTITY WITHIN THE COUNTY. The Academy Awards show was not as boring as some of the recent debacles and there was some obvious effort to keep things moving.

But there are still way too many awards presented and the “thank you” speeches are still pretty painful especially since the speakers are actors and creative artists. Do not tell me that you did not pre-pare anything “in case I won;” we all practice this speech.

Just say it quickly and suc-cinctly and move on to the bar.

The Academy are a fl aky bunch and their votes are sometimes surprisingly pre-dictable as well as unpredict-able.

The biggest surprise to me was Best Director going to Ang Lee for “Life of Pi.”

The voting academy had already confi rmed their fl aki-ness by snubbing Quentin Tarantino and Ben Affl eck in the Best Director category by

failing to even nominate them. “But not to worry” sayeth

the Academy, we will “throw you boys a bone” down the road.

And that they did, by awarding Tarantino an Oscar for his script and Best Picture for Affl eck.

I was worried about my boy Affl eck; during the entire show he looked pretty sad and surly and more than once I thought he might blow a fuse.

During his acceptance speech for Best Picture, he mentioned the wisdom of not holding grudges because he was holding a huge grudge that made the chip on his shoulder appear to be a boul-der.

I’m confi dent that George Clooney calmed him down with a few drinks and talked him down from the ledge with the 8 ½ pound Oscar held fi rmly in his hand.

How cool is Jennifer Law-

rence? She took a tumble going up

the stairs to accept her Oscar for Best Actress and then got the audience to laugh along with her.

She will never live it down and we will see the fall re-played thousands of times over the next 50 years, but she got the Oscar at the tender age of 22; that’s right, she was born in 1990.

And then we have the great and powerful Daniel Day-Lewis winning his unprec-edented third Oscar for Best Actor. His speech was as gra-cious as he can be.

All in all, there was a nice spread of the wealth and gold for this 85th Academy Awards and now we start the game all over. Stay tuned. Rock ‘n Roll.

By BASIL HOUSEWRIGHT, JR.Trampolines have become a

popular back yard addition to many homes. Most homeown-ers are not aware that their Home Insurance Companies do not approve of the home-owner having a trampoline on their premises. In fact most Home Insurance Companies would not renew a home in-surance policy if they knew the homeowner had a tram-poline on their premises. Fur-thermore most Home Insur-ance Companies will refuse to offer a new home insurance policy to a new customer if they have a trampoline on their home premises.

Why would this be so, most homeowners would ask? Trampolines have been an all too frequent source of very large claims when someone is injured on a trampoline. The typical Home Insurance Pol-icy covers Personal Liability, which would provide cover-age for a guest being injured

on the homeowner’s premises. So the concern of the Home Insurance Companies are they would be liable for claims made by others that were in-jured while playing on your backyard trampoline. Many think trampolines with safety netting make trampolines a safe source of recreation but this is not true. Most serious injuries and deaths are a cause of landing in an unsafe posi-tion causing damage to the neck, back and limbs. Many broken bones and sprains are a result of unsafe landings on trampolines. Many times more than one person jumps on a trampoline at the same time and the result can be a collision of bodies causing in-juries.

Most Home Insurance Companies inspect newly in-sured homes to make sure the home is “insurable” which one consideration is the pres-ence of trampolines. A Home Insurance Company has up to

60 days to cancel a new policy if conditions they consider un-acceptable are determined as a result of a new business in-spection. So if you are consid-ering changing Home Insur-ance Companies and have a trampoline on your premises, you may want to ask if they are allowed. You will prob-ably fi nd they are not. Many Home Insurance Companies also perform re-inspections every few years on homes they insure to make sure no unacceptable conditions have

taken place prior to offering to renew a home insurance policy.

Some Home Insurance Companies will insure a homeowner who has a tram-poline on their premises how-ever they will require the homeowner to sign a specifi c, “Trampoline Liability Exclu-sion” in order to insure them. This is not a good idea as the exclusion means you have NO personal liability coverage re-lated to bodily injury involv-ing a trampoline. So if some-one is injured while using your trampoline you have no insurance to cover this high-risk exposure. Trampolines have become so problematic to Home Insurance Compa-nies several automatically is-sue all new home insurance policies with a mandatory “Trampoline Exclusion En-dorsement” or clause which means you have NO person-al liability coverage related to bodily injury involving a

trampoline automatically. My advice is to keep your

children safe and don’t as-sume the very high-risk ex-posure which goes along with putting a trampoline in your yard.

Having the neighborhood children over to your home to jump on your trampoline is not a good idea. You are responsible for their safety and trampolines are danger-ous. It would be sad to be on the receiving end of a lawsuit because a visiting person was injured, disabled or killed on your property while playing on your trampoline.

By BARBARA FULENWIDERLexus dominates the luxury

hybrid market with the CT 200h. The CT 200h’s size, packaging, full hybrid technol-ogy and ultra-low emissions is targeted at the young, highly discerning, environmentally conscientious customer. It’s Lexus through and through and so offers no compromise on the refi nement and driving pleasure.

The CT has a combined EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 42 mpg, 43 mpg city and 40 mpg on the highway using regular 87-octane gaso-line. The CT has an exhaust heat recovery system that captures the heat from spent exhaust gases to speed engine coolant warm-up. This allows the hybrid system to stop the engine earlier and more often in the driving cycle when it’s not needed, for instance when inching along freeways during rush hour.

The CT 200h pairs an elec-tric drive motor to generate a total system output of 134 horsepower. A second motor in the hybrid system starts the engine and generator to charge the battery pack.

The CT 200h incorporates a drive-mode selector that al-lows the driver to toggle be-tween Normal, Sport, Eco or EV. Normal mode gives natu-rally progressive power while the sport mode provides a more dynamic experience. In Eco mode, air conditioning settings are adjusted and the throttle response is reduced relative to the pedal angle to emphasize fuel economy. Un-der certain circumstances, the EV mode can allow the vehicle to be driven short distances us-ing only the electric motors and produces zero emissions.

Responsive passing accel-eration is enabled by the in-stant torque of the electric mo-tor and the E-CVT’s ability to quickly fi nd the optimal gear

ratio to enhance the driving experience.

An optional F SPORT pack-age combines F SPORT-tuned suspension and 17-inch wheels with high-gloss fi nish. Adding to the sporty feel are a front grille with mesh pattern, metal front scuff plates, perforated leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, aluminum sport pedals and metallic trim on the dash panel.

New amenities on the 2013 CT 200h include an updated, padded driver’s arm rest, park assist as a stand-alone option and heated front seats and four-way power passenger seat.

Optional Pre-Collision Sys-tem (PCS) with Dynamic Ra-dar Cruise Control can help reduce collision damage and uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set distance from a ve-hicle traveling ahead. PCS is equipped with a front-mounted radar sensor that is designed to detect certain obstacles in front of the car.

Luxurious comfort and con-venience features on the Lexus CT 200h are 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support, four-way manual-adjustable front passenger seat; six-speaker au-dio system, voice recognition and Bluetooth® technology hands-free communication when paired with a compatible smartphone.

Inside the CT, the dashboard is divided into an upper and lower display zone, with an eight-inch, LCD multi-display screen. The front seats feature pronounced side bolsters for additional lateral support dur-ing high-G cornering and there is an extensive use of metallic fi nishes and dark, soft touch materials to reinforce the pre-mium quality of the cockpit.

Lexus has added more torque to its CT 200 hybrid and that makes it a fun vehicle to drive. With all standard equip-

ment it retails for $32,850. With the optional premium, LED headlamps, the leather package and navigation sys-tem the total came to $38,620 for the compact four-door, four passenger, luxury hybrid.

Two volunteer leaders of a young and dynamic museum association will be honored on Tuesday, March 5, by the Fort Bend County Historical Asso-ciation.

Rene Lamb and Vickie Tonn are this year’s pending recipi-ents of the historical commis-sion’s annual Heritage Award. The prestigious award will be presented during a public re-ception scheduled for 7 p.m. at Safari Texas in Richmond.

The two Fort Bend County residents are offi cers of the Old Foster Community Mu-seum board of directors.

In announcing the recipi-ents for 2013, Historical Com-mission Chair Bert Bleil noted that Lamb and Tonn were chosen in recognition of their organization’s achievements “as an all-volunteer grassroots organization.”

Tonn is in her third term as president of the 10-member board, while Lamb is secretary and former interim president.

Examining artifacts at an Old Foster Community Museumdesk are Rene Lamb and Vickie Tonn.

Madison “Maddy” Reese, a ninth-grade student at Clem-ents High School, is one of 10 winners of the Goethe-Insti-tut’s Award of Excellence con-test. She was among 15,000 high school students from the U.S. and Canada to participate in the contest, which asked participants to view a video and correctly answer quiz questions relating to the video.

This year’s video, titled “Beyond Autobahn,” focused on German automotive cul-ture. The fi lm covered the his-tory of the automobile, as well as contemporary challenges faced by the world today, such as labor laws and environmen-tal issues.

Not only did Reese solve the quiz questions, but she also correctly answered the bonus question. As a winner, she was awarded a scholarship to study the German language this summer at a Goethe-In-stitut course of her choosing. She has selected a course in Freiburg in the southwest part

Fort Bend Historical Commission to honor Lamb and Tonn

Lamb is also the remaining charter member of the board, which organized in 2003.

“These volunteers exempli-fy the spirit found throughout Fort Bend County,” Bleil said.

“The Foster community and the northwest part of the county have demonstrated a tremendous desire to have a museum, as well as the drive and ability to achieve their vi-sion.”

Both recipients have prior histories of civic involvement. Their diverse roles with the Foster museum include fund-raising, awarding of scholar-ships, acquisition of museum properties, and general man-

agement.Fort Bend County Judge

Bob Hebert will present each honoree with a Heritage Award trophy, which consists of a bronze eagle mounted on a wooden base shaped in the outline of the county.

This will be the fi fth year for the award. Last year’s re-cipient was Sugar Land histo-rian Bettye Anhaiser.

The Heritage Award, Bleil noted, was created to recog-nize the accomplishments by persons or organizations that resulted in the preservation or promotion of historical and cultural assets within the county.

Shown pointing to her travel destination is Madison Reese.of Germany. She will attend the study course from July 7-27.

“I’m so excited and sur-prised to have won this schol-arship, and I’m very thankful for getting this opportunity,” said Reese. “Planning the trip has been fun, and I have al-ready learned so much about Germany. I can’t wait to sub-merge myself in the culture

and meet new friends who share the same love of Ger-many.”

This is the second time that a Clements student has earned the Award of Excellence. For more information about the Award of Excellence 2012 or the upcoming Award of Excel-lence 2013, visit the Goethe-Institut New York online at www.goethe.de/newyork.
