Heritage statement Conservaon method statement Stakeholder consultaon Desk-based assessment PROJECT BACKGROUND In 2012 Nong Hill Home Ownership applied for planning permission for a 51 unit residenal development and SLR supplied crical supporng documentaon which enabled consent. The land was occupied by redundant buildings of the Territorial Army. Although the main building dated from the 1950s the site has had a much longer associaon with the military, with previous Drill Halls dang back to at least 1896. Set within the eastern facade of the exisng building on Old Jamaica Road, an earlier structure survived. This was a War Memorial erected in 1921 to commemorate those soldiers from 22nd Baalion the London Regiment who died during the First World War, protected as a listed building (Grade II). A second Grade II listed building, part of the Neckinger Mills constructed in 1864, abued the plot to the rear. OUR ROLE The proposed development was designed to interact and respond to the surrounding context and townscape with a central courtyard area and car parking at basement level. The listed war memorial was seen as a key aspect of the site and its locaon within the new building has been carefully designed to enhance the overall development. A key point of this scheme was to respect and preserve the integrity of the listed structure. The sensivity of the War Memorial in parcular, required a sympathec approach, stakeholder consultaon, and carefully considered heritage impact assessment, as well as detailed design for dismantling, conservaon and re-erecon of the memorial, in order for gaining consent to the proposal. The re-assembly of the War Memorial in the same locaon, however, meant that its significance as a point of remembrance for the local community would connue.
