The title is central and in the foreground of the poster drawing the most attention. The contrast of the white against a red background also draws in more focus. The font used is clear and easy to read however it is textured to look ‘beaten up’ which is conventional in to the zombie horror genre. At the top of the page are two glaring eyes with abnormal irises, it is a common horror convention that zombies have different colour eyes showcasing the infection. The close up of the eyes is common among horror posters as extreme close ups of eyes make people feel squeamish and uncomfortable. The background of the poster also shows man walking through the city of London. It is clear the city is London as it uses the iconic building: Big Ben. The image is a stencil and has additional textured marks as does the whole poster, indicating the destruction associated with a zombie apocalypse. The image is more powerful due to it being a block colour of black. The black image overlaying the bright red is far more noticeable than a colourful image. At the very top of the poster it mentions previous films that the director has worked on, advertising the film as if you like the directors previous work people are more likely to be drawn to this upcoming production. As we read top to bottom we are drawn to the top statement, however as it is not the title or the main focus the font size is significantly smaller and the colour stands out less than the white font. Above the title there is a small introduction that includes a quote from a review, positively advertising the film as reviews on the poster are positive

Above the title there is a small introduction that includes a quote from a review, positively advertising the film as reviews on the poster are positive reviews and an audience is more inclined to go to a production with good feedback. The the very bottom in white text there is a web address adding a social aspect which is popular with post 2000 movies. At the bottom there is the release date which is larger than the surrounding text drawing more attention as it is part of the main focus of the poster. There is also a TAGLINE at the bottom trying to add a scare, wow factor.

The title of the poster is three quarters of the way down the page drawing a lot of focus. The title uses a large font to show the importance over the rest of the information on the page.

The title is in red white stands out against the pale back ground. The title is also textured and ‘tattered’ high lighting a

chaos of the movie. The central image in the foreground is a zombie hand coming

out of the ground. The image is bold and eye catching however is a very similar tone to the background, I would have the hand standout against the back ground to create a powerful image. The close up of body part is popular in the horror genre, such

as Saw has a close up of a leg. In the image of the hand there is also iconic features of London such as the London eye,

complying to the convention of cities and locations in the poster. In the image the buildings and being broken and there

is dirt from bursting out of the ground, this emphases the destruction associated with a zombie apocalypse.

At the bottom left corner there is a tagline. This is not the most benefiting position as it is not near the center of focus and is in

a small font. However the review at the top of the is bold, the contrast of black against the glowing background. The position

of the review is also beneficial as it is at the top of the page which is where the audience’s eyes first head. The positive

reviews help to sell the film as people can visually see the star rating.

At the bottom of the page is the small text about the producers, director, actors, etc. this poster brakes convention

by having the text in the bottom right hand corner of the page rather than the convention of having the text across the

bottom in the center.

The title of the poster is written in a shaky font rather than a clear and neat font which breaks the typical zombie horror movie poster. The texture and colour of the word zombie connotes blood, linked to a zombie infection. The colour of the font is gradient from black to grey and black to red. The bold colour of the title draws in attention however the red is more effective than the grey. The title is at the very top of the poster drawing most attention and also for the main image to be the central focus. The tag line is above the title and is in a large font drawing in attention however it would stand out more if the title was lower down. The review of the movie are down the right hand side if the poster, this is the optimum position as in a western culture we read left to right, putting the text on the left hand side makes it instantly more noticeable for reading. In the background of the main image there are tower blocks indicating an urban city area which is a common feature among zombie movie poster. In the foreground of the image there is a close up of a fist and forearm. The arm in blistered and bloody but unrealistic gore to make it safe for public viewing. The fist highlights the disease rather than destruction which most posters play on. The raised veins suggest infection rather than reanimation of the dead. The small text at the bottom of the page discussing the producers, actors, etc. spreads across the bottom of the page from the center which is common for any genre of movie. At the very bottom of the text there is a web link adding social aspect to the movie. The logos of the companies are also at the bottom of the page giving visual association. The three main colours used on the poster are red, black and white. They are also conventional colours for the horror genre as the red connote danger and blood. The tattered background connotes destruction.

Page 4: Format research: Movie Poster

From my research I have found a convention in zombie movies is the have a close up of the fist and in the background indicate the location, for my poster I will have the woods as that is my primary setting. The background should have a slight texture to symbolize the destruction of zombies. The title should also be textured to connote the chaos of an apocalypse. A common feature if the main image is a fist, the fist is a memorial image but also complies to the convention of close ups on body parts. I will use black, red and white on my poster as the red connotes danger and the black and white are bold contrasting colours making the product stand out. Modern movie posters include a social media aspect, either adding a web link or social media page. Adding it at the bottom of the page means that it is not the main feature of the poster however is still important. Adding a social media aspect brings my poster up to date. An important feature of a movie poster is the release date, I should put me release date in a different colour to the surrounding text to make it stand out. I will place my tag line around the title as it is more noticeable. Putting the production companies’ logos at the bottom of the poster gives visual association to the brands, using it as a selling point, if you like know the production company and you like previous productions then you are more likely to notice or be interested in the movie.
