Formal Proposal

Title of magazine and Explanation of choice of genre

• Title – Riddim• I have chosen to do the genre of RnB/Hip Hop because I

found it the most interesting genre. It has a lot of history and goes back to the 1940’s where it originated from as Rhythm and Blues and has developed ever since into contemporary RnB. It has also provided the template for other genres of music to evolve, including Rock ‘n’ Roll and therefore has always been the basis of music. Rhythm and blues itself has evolved so much that now the term RnB is now more broad and can be described soulful, modern, rock, with hip hop influence and this why I think it’s the best genre to do for a magazine because it contains so much history and depth to it.

Target audience

• My target audience is 16-25 year old men and women in the C1 and C2 category. I want to make a magazine for a wide range of ethnicities but will mainly be focusing on those of a white ethnicity as there isn’t any RnB magazines that target this ethnicity as they all mainly target those of a black origin.

• I think by targeting the magazine at those in the middle and C1 class category. I initially was going to do it for just the middle class but decided to do it for C1 as well because it means my magazine will have a wider audience and it links in with that most RnB artists have come from lower than middle class backgrounds and therefore those in the C1 category will feel they can relate to the magazine better.

Initial ideas about front page

• From my previous research where I asked people who their favourite artist was, the majority of them said Rihanna and then Drake, this means that I will use a girl or a group of girls on my front page- possibly a girl band, and then use a boy for another image- possibly a male singer. By doing this I am giving my audience what they want which means my magazine will be really effective.

• In another question, they said that they would prefer more pictures than words and this is what I will do to achieve a neater, more appealing cover.

• They also said they would like the colours green, blue and yellow to be used, this gives me an idea of what my colour scheme for the magazine will be.

Initial ideas about contents page

• As said in the previous slide, my audience would rather have more images than writing so I will try and use smaller pictures, maybe inserts on the contents page so its not just full of information. One I idea I have is to use an image of a male singer, to coincide with the question that the audience liked Drake, and use this image for a competition to win this male singer’s album.

• My audience also said they would prefer a larger font, so I will create continuity throughout my magazine by using a clear, simple and easily read sized font.

Initial ideas about my double page spread

• In one question the audience said that they looked for interviews with an artist or band so on my double page spread I will feature an interview with possibly a new girl band. This interview will include secrets/gossip and more small pictures which is what my audience wanted as well.

• I will continue to follow a colour scheme and the same font and font size to maintain continuity.

Initial ideas about photographs

• Because my audience preferred a female artist, I will create a girl band and take pictures of them for the font page and double page spread. They will follow the stereotypical representation of RnB female singers such as Nicki Minaj and Rihanna- big boobs, bum, hair and quirky clothing to match the personality.

• I will also use pictures of a new male singer as the audience also said their second favourite artist was Drake. I will make him follow the stereotypical representation of male RnB singers as ‘bad boys’ with tattoos and bling.
