11.4: Areas of Regular Polygons

“I can find areas of regular polygons, and of composite figures.”

New Vocabulary

Regular Polygon

Area of a Regular Polygon

Step 1: Find the center of the polygon Step 2: Draw segments to all vertices from center of polygon Step 3: Calculate the central angles by dividing 360 by the number of

sides: 𝟑𝟔𝟎

𝒏.

Step 4: Draw in the altitude and divide the central angle by half for new top angle. Step 5: Divide side length in half. Step 6: Use a trig ratio to find the altitude. Step 7: Find the area of the triangle.

𝑨 =𝟏

𝟐𝒃𝒉

Step 8: Multiply the area found in Step 7 by the amount of triangles in the entire polygon. Note: Try to leave your answer in radical form!
