Section 1: Unseen Translation 30 marks Instructions

Read the following passage told at a Roman dinner party about an unlucky inventor.

UNBREAKABLE GLASS

Olim erat faber, Corinthus nomine, qui fecerat phialam vitream

quae frangi non poterat. Voluit igitur eam regi dare. Laetus ad

regem cucurrit manu donum tenens quod simulabat se ei tradere.

Subito tamen phialam in terram conjecit.

Rex perterritus est. Postquam autem faber phialam sustulit, rex

intellexit eam collisam esse sicut vas aeneum. Faber cepit

martiolum e vestimento et phialam vehementer pulsavit ut integra

iterum fieret. Hoc facto, sperabat se magnas divitias a rege

accepturum esse.

Tum rex eum rogavit, “Quis alius scit talem phialam facere?”

Faber negavit quemquam hoc scire. Rex igitur jussit illum interfici

ne phialae vitreae pretiosiores fierent quam aurum.
