PART OF SPEECH (2)

1.We can know a word’s part of speech by looking at its ending.

Nouns often end in :

1.-ence, e.g.convenience, intelligence.

2.-ion, e.g.administration, education.

3.-ist, e.g.artist, tourist.

4.-ity, e.g.ability, personality.

5.-ment, e.g.argument, development.

6.-th, e.g.length, warmth.

Verbs often end in:1.-ate, e.g.activate,rotate. 2.-ed, e.g.allowed,invented.3.-en, e.g.harden,shorten. 4.-ify, e.g.clarify, purify.5.-ing, e.g.eating,playing. 6.-ise, e.g.compromise.

Adjectives often end in:1.-able or –ible, e.g. capable, intelligible.2.-ed, e.g. astonished, interested.3.-ful, e.g. colourful, useful.4.-ing, e.g. amazing, exciting.5.-ious, e.g. cautious, delicious.6.-ive, e.g. active, attractive.7.-less, e.g. careless, hopeless.8.-y, e.g. cloudy, sleepy.

2.We can also know the word’s part of speech by looking at the words before

or after it.Nouns often come after:1.Articles, e.g. a bus, an egg, the teacher.

2.adjectives, e.g. easy work, polite students.

3.possessive adj., e.g. my computer, her books.

4.verbs, e.g. eat lunch, listen to music, study English.

Verbs often come:1.after subjects, e.g. Amy is tall. He likes pizza.2.after modals, e.g. can swim, must try harder.3.before objects, e.g. begin the exam, eat pizza.4.before adverbs, e.g. ate nosily, finished easily.5.before adjectives, e.g. is tall, seem difficult.

Adjectives often come after:1.articles and bf nouns, e.g. a large flat, the fat boy.2.adverbs of degree, e.g. rather boring, really busy.3.possessive adj, e.g. our new car, your small bag.4.the perceptive verbs, e.g.appear, be, look, seem, taste

Adverbs often come:

1.after ‘have’, ‘has’ and ‘had’ and bf past participles

e.g. have recently arrived, has completely finished.

2.after subjects and bf verbs, e.g. Mike usually runs.

3.after verbs, e.g. ate quickly, dances beautifully.

4.before an adj, e.g.absolutely happy, extremely good

very easy.
