Royal Barge Procession

A grand and stately spectacle awaits on Bangkok's Chao Phraya River on June 12.

That's when the Royal Barge Procession will be gracefully gliding in formation along the river to the rhythmic beat of drummers, manned by more than 2,000 brilliantly clad oarsmen in ancient costumes.

Whats in a name? Your future. This is according to the famous Malaysian shoe designer, Jimmy Choo. Choo first __(9)__ his shoe shop in London in 1984 under the brand name Lucky Shoe, which he admitted wasnt lucky for him. Rebranding to James Shoes a few months later __(10)__ any more successful. Then in 1986, working out of the former Metropolitan Hospital in East London __(11)__ had been converted into a market for artisans and clothing designers, he was inspired by a fellow designer to use his own name.

Times were __(12)__ but he persisted and two years later, Choo caught the attention of British Vogue, which dedicated an eightpage spread to his designs. The __(13)__ feature attracted the attention of several British fashion designers, including Jasper Conran and Ben de Lisi, who then asked Choo to design shoes for their catwalk __(14)__. A lady who worked with the designer __(15)__ Choo and told him they wanted to use his shoes, but didnt want to use his name in the show. Choo said, No way! It was possibly the most important strategic decision of his career.

Adapted from Readers Digest, May 2009

You bought it? I said, unable to hide the surprise in my voice. Where did you buy it?

From a little place in the market, the open air one that takes place twice a week in the park. Theres an old lady there who said she used to bake them for her husbands. She had seven of them, would you believe? And they all ate her fruitcakes.

Somehow I wasnt surprise that she had had seven husbands. Not with those fruitcakes.

Did she say what she put in them? I asked hopefully.

Only that she put in a special something that she grew herself, said Aunt Mimi. She wouldnt say what. She told me that she only baked that kind of cake a few times. As a matter of fact she knew that I was thinking about finding a husband for you. I dont know how she knew but she did.

None of your touch-typing for her! Every letter she stared in the face like it was criminal and she the judge. You cant wonder she hates you young girls, with your fingers flying over the keys like white butterflies, and your eyes gazing out into the sunshine. They gave her the push, you know.

After forty-three tears? Lucy said, shocked into sympathy.

Well, she was past it, wasnt she? Of course they wrapped it up in tissue paper. Gave her a brass clock and shook her hand and waved her goodbye. She didnt want to go. Didnt have anywhere worth going to a bedsit, a gas ring... The old bag didnt have any family whod own her. This place was her home, this job was all she lived for.

From stanza 1, write down one line that indicates he is not to be trusted.

He Had Such Quiet Eyes

He had such quiet eyes

She did not realise

They were two pools of lies

Layered with thinnest ice

To her, those quiet eyes

Were breathing desolate sighs

Imploring her to be nice

And to render him paradise

If only shed been wise

And had listened to the advice

Never to compromise

With pleasure-seeking guys

Shed be free from the hows and whys

Now heres a bit of advice

Be sure that nice really means nice

Then youll never be losing at dice

Though you may lose your heart once or twice
