“Forgiveness”
Matthew 18:21-35
I. Why we should forgive
• We should forgive so as not to give Satan a foothold in our lives.– Unforgiveness gives Satan the opportunity to get a
grip on us spiritually.– We grieve the Holy Spirit.
I. Why we should forgive
• We should forgive because Christ forgave us.– Our relationships ought to be compassionate.– We ought to forgive just as God forgave us
through Christ.• He forgave us willingly.
• He forgave us completely.– TETELESTAI means “PAID IN FULL”
I. Why we should forgive
• We should forgive so we can have freedom from bitterness.– We need to put away damaging attitudes.
• Bitterness, rage and anger
– We need to get rid of damaging behaviors.• Brawling and slander, along with all malice.
II. How to forgive.
• Decide to forgive.– Forgiveness is never based on feeling.– We forgive because it is the right thing to do.
• Articulate your forgiveness.– Verbalize forgiveness to those who ask for it.– It helps to say the words even if confrontation is
neither possible or advisable.
II. How to forgive.
• Let go of the offense.– We need to resolve the issue and win over a
brother or sister in the Lord (Matthew 18).– We ought to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us.
Conclusion
• Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting.
• Forgiveness is not the same as trusting.
Forgiveness must be granted; it cannot be earned.
Trust cannot be granted; it must be earned.
