research collaborationThe benefit to research staff and students from the cross-fertilisation of ideas is well recognised and UNSW Canberra actively pursues strategies to promote collaboration across schools, other faculties of UNSW, Defence, government organisations and universities/research organisations in Australia and overseas. Many staff and students are already involved in research collaborations with academic, research, industrial and government organisations. In particular, UNSW Canberra participated in the following research centres:

– ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology (ACT node);

– Australian Literature Gateway;

– CRC for Advanced Composite Materials; and

– The Sino-Australia Research Centre for Coastal Management (SARCCM), a Research Centre of the University of New South Wales with a multidisciplinary/multi-faculty focus which works closely with the Ocean University of China in collaborative research on coastal management.

UNSW Canberra has a Rector-funded Visiting Fellowship Scheme that encourages researchers to seek association with scholars and academics who will strengthen existing research areas and/or assist UNSW Canberra in recruiting new staff and postgraduate research students from other institutions (see Appendix 4).

china scholarship council (csc) programIn order to foster collaboration with universities in the region, and to attract top quality research students to the Faculty, UNSW through UNSW Canberra has signed memoranda of intent (MOI) with five leading Chinese universities: Beihang University, Ocean University of China, South China University of Technology, Tianjin University and Xi’an Jiaotong University. The agreements provide for both academic and student exchange. In particular, holders of CSC scholarships are offered additional stipends, tuition fees scholarships, and pastoral care, as well as the potential for joint supervision by the signatory universities. As at the end of 2011, there were 49 CSC students on campus, enrolled in PhD programs across the four schools.

In September, the Rector, Professor Michael Frater, led a delegation to visit Ocean University of China, Xi’an Jiaotong University and South China University of Technology to discuss and establish/further enhance research collaborations, and to provide information to potential PhD applicants. atlantis space shuttleAssociate Professor Andrew Neely (pictured right) from UNSW Canberra was invited to Florida to attend the launch of the Atlantis space shuttle. STS-135 (Atlantis) was launched on Friday 8th July from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) next to Cape Canaveral in Florida.

A day before the launch A/Prof Neely visited various facilities at the NASA’s Kennedy Space Center with other VIPs including the Australian Ambassador to the

USA, Kim Beazley and his family. The tour included behind-the-scenes access to the huge Vertical Assembly Building (VAB) where the Space Shuttle stack (orbiter, solid booster rockets and external fuel tank) are assembled on top of the mobile launch pad. This is the same building originally built to assemble the Apollo moon rockets. The group also viewed the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) and stood beneath the Orbiter Discovery which returned from its final mission in March, toured the Space Shuttle Main Engine maintenance facility and viewed Atlantis close up on the launch pad.

Associate Professor Neely (pictured below) was a launch guest of the International & Interagency branch of NASA HQ’s Office of External Relations. This office invites a range of VIP guests with an interest in spaceflight to launches. Quests range from foreign dignitaries such as the Australian Ambassador, international scientists working in related areas (Neely’s academic research is in hypersonic aerothermodynamics and propulsions), foreign defence personnel, members of international space agencies (there were members of the European Space Agency (ESA), and a large contingent from the Canadian Space Agency there) to as those involved with the actual mission and some media celebrities.

Research Centres

arc centre of excellence for Quantum computer technologyUNSW Canberra is privileged to be involved with the CQC2T, an international research effort to develop the science and technology of a global quantum information network, encompassing ultra-fast quantum computation, absolutely secure quantum communication and distributed quantum information processing.

The Centre was established as a Special Research Centre in 2000 and has nodes at the University of New South Wales, the Australian National University, the University of Queensland, the University of Melbourne, UNSW Canberra, the Department of Defence, Griffith University, Macquarie University and the University of Sydney. The Centre encompasses major research infrastructure at each of the eight nodes, including an extensive semiconductor nano-fabrication facility (at UNSW Kensington), crystal growth, ion implantation, surface analysis, laser physics, high magnetic fields/low temperatures, and has substantial theoretical support. The UNSW Canberra node has an experimental quantum optics research program, headed by Prof Elanor Huntington.

sino-australia research centre for coastal ManagementWhile Australia and China have vastly different populations with 1.3 billion in China and only 22.3 million in Australia, both have the majority of people living near the coast, and there is a continuing migration of people towards the coast. In Australia more than 83% of people live within 50 km of the coast, while in China, the estimate is that 60% of people live in the 12 coastal provinces. A recent comprehensive assessment shows that Australian marine industry contributes 25 billion Australian dollars annually to the national economy. Over the next ten years, China will develop the Blue (Marine) Economic Zones (BEZ) with the government and industry funding exceeding CNY1.4 trillion (A$200 billion). This leads to increasing pressures being put on the coastal zone and the requirement for research to better understand these complex zones and improve their management.

Unprecedented economic growth and increasing investment in science and research has contributed to China becoming one of the world’s leading science producers. Following Australian Government and community calls to increase cooperation in science and technology with China, a Sino-Australian Research Centre for Coastal Management (SARCCM) was established in November 2010. SARCCM is a Research Centre of the University of New South Wales with a multidisciplinary/multi-faculty focus. It works closely with the Ocean University of China (OUC is one of UNSW MOI universities, and a key partner for the BEZ construction in China) in collaborative research on coastal science and management. The UNSW Canberra campus and several faculties of UNSW in Sydney contribute to the Research Centre. The SARCCM has strong team of 17 researchers from UNSW and its collaborative organisations, as well as 2 externally funded postdoctoral fellows, 9 HDR students and one visiting fellow from OUC.

Since the launch, SARCCM has attracted strong interest from both the national and international scientific community as well as from industries. An article was published in the American Geophysical Union Newsletter EOS which described SARCCM research collaboration with China. SARCCM scientists and students have also been active in carrying out research activities in five programs including coastal oceanography, coastal engineering, remote sensing, marine policy and law, and climate change and socio-economics. Two special issues with a total of fifteen papers in highly ranked international journals have been published and an external research grant has been obtained. Through seminars, workshops and international visits, SARCCM has established a strong collaborative research network of scientists, government and industry people in China and Australia, with several research projects being developed for funding by national and international funding sources.

advanced composite research unitApplications of advanced composite materials in the aerospace, civil infrastructure, oil and gas, high-end machines, antennas and marine industries are gaining more and more significance and their number is growing very quickly. Modern composite technologies are used to produce innovative products on an industrial scale. The successful development of such technologies requires an intensive research effort. In 2011, research activities undertaken by the ACRU members included development of new structural design and analysis methods, experimental characterisation of new materials, studies of the structural performance and manufacturing effects.

In 2011 the members supervised 22 Postgraduate Research students, have published 16 journal papers and 1 book chapter, and made 25 presentations at national and international conferences. Regular

research presentations have been delivered by the postgraduate students, staff members and visiting researchers at the ACRU research seminars. The members carried on their work on the CRC for Advanced Composite Structures Grant: Deep water composites (Evgeny Morozov, Krishna Shankar, Rik Heslehurst, Amar Khennane, and Arif Ashraf); Defence-related Research Funding Scheme: Experimental study on

hybrid-ECC materials and high velocity impact response of hybrid ECC panels (Sarah Zhang); South China University of Technology Grant: Investigation of dynamic behaviour of new hybrid-fibre engineered cementitious composites (ECC) by experimental study and numerical simulation (Sarah Zhang). Performance of the integrated FRP-concrete structural components, and new fibre-reinforced cementitious composites have been studied by Obada Kayali and Amar Khenanne. Work on medical-related projects (biomechanics and heat transfer in the brain involving simulations of individual nerve fibre models) has continued to apply engineering tools to clinical problems (Andrew Neely, Murat Tahtali).

In 2011 the regular publication of the ACRU Newsletter by the postgraduate students was launched. The newsletter reflects on the major events related to the ACRU activities and social life of the students affiliated with the Unit.

Current Research

In 2011, more than 100 research projects were in progress. The following selection of projects represents the diversity of the research currently being undertaken at UNSW Canberra.

new real-time risk Indicators to Improve the efficiency, environmental Impact and safety of air traffic ManagementResearchers: Professor Hussein Abbass, Dr Chris Lokan, Dr Geoffrey Aldis (Airservices), Mr. Gregory Dunstone (Airservices), and Mr. Robert Butcher (Airservices), SEIT

Funding: ARC Linkage Project 2011 - 2014Australia manages 51 million sq kms (11%) of the world’s airspace. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a recent technology whereby aircraft can communicate to the ground and other aircraft in the neighbourhood much information that is not accessible with traditional Radar-based surveillance technologies. From 2013, ADS-B will be mandated for all aircraft flying at or above 29,000ft in the Australian airspace covering the two Australian Flight Information Regions. Additionally, since 6 March 2009, if ADS-B

is carried voluntarily for operational purposes (in any airspace at any altitude), aircraft must have equipment that is approved and it must be operated continuously (unless authorised otherwise by air traffic control).

Given the large volumes of real-time aircraft data that will be available as a result, it is timely to develop real-time risk indicators to monitor and assess air-traffic safety in real-time. This new real-time risk picture of the Australian airspace will make it possible to safely meet the increase in air-traffic demand while optimizing air traffic efficiency, environmental impact and safety. This leads to the following project aims:

(1) to design suitable schemas and meta-data for bringing together the heterogeneous data sources including ADS-B and meteorological data to increase real-time situation awareness and aircraft safety monitoring;

(2) to design performance indicators suitable for measuring aircraft occupancy and collision risk, and for assessing risk in airspace volumes in real time;

(3) to design real-time collision anticipatory approaches capable of anticipating future risk to improve efficiency, environmental impact and safety of air traffic management.

Insurgency and strategic non-violence: the resistance in east timorResearcher: Dr Clinton Fernandes, HASS

Funding: ARC Discovery Project 2010-2012Strategic nonviolence is a method of waging conflict through social, psychological, economic and political means without the threat or use of violence. By contrast with principled nonviolence, where participants’ religious or other ethical commitments lead them to eschew violence, strategic nonviolent actors are nonviolent on pragmatic grounds. Strategic nonviolence is a method of fighting opponents in order to make them submit; it is not about resolving conflict but waging it. It is about forcing the opponent to accommodate to one’s demands, and does not necessarily involve converting the opponent morally to one’s views.

In East Timor, occupied by Indonesia between 1975 and 1999, conventional (armed) resistance was crushed in the late 1970s, and strategic nonviolence came to be used with increasing frequency from the late 1980s. This project examines the East Timorese resistance, especially its use of strategic non-violence under conditions of international isolation. With only a handful of guerrillas in the mountains, the military component of the resistance was virtually absent. The project investigates how a largely non-violent insurgency was successful despite being geographically and militarily isolated. No other independence campaign using strategic nonviolence was successful under these conditions. This project has already resulted in a book (The Independence of East Timor: Multidimensional perspectives – Occupation, Resistance and International Political Activism, Sussex Academic Press, UK, 2011).

1918: how the allies Won the First World WarResearcher: Dr Elizabeth Greenhalgh, HASS

Funding: ARC Discovery Project grant 2010 - 2014The way wars end is a neglected topic. The origins of the First World War have been studied at length, but this research aims to elucidate how and why the Entente Allies gained victory on the Western Front in 1918. The focus is the coalition nature of the victory, and archival collections in France, Germany and Italy, as well as the UK are being used. Coalition is important: Australia has fought all its wars as part of a coalition, and some of them have ended very messily. Some long-held preconceptions about the German armies, often portrayed as technologically advanced, better trained and more efficient, will be countered. Hence this research will show why it was Germany, following its allies, who requested an armistice.

Other important questions demand answers. Does the concept of a learning curve explain how victory followed disasters such as the Somme and Passchendaele? It has been asserted, only partly in jest, that the Australians (or the Canadians—but not, it seems, the New Zealanders) won the war. Does the concept of a national way of war have value? Can the existence and utility of unit cohesion be proved? What about technology? Were tanks the answer to trench-bound warfare? What about the shifting dynamics between generals and politicians of different nationalities, and how do liberal democracies compare to a military dictatorship? Finally, could (or should) the Armistice have been signed in Berlin? Would there have been no Hitler, if Germany had been invaded and forced thereby to acknowledge defeat?

Some answers to these questions will be presented in a monograph. Two book chapters on 1918 have appeared already.

Multiferroic materials for the next generation of microelectronicsResearcher: Dr Annemieke Mulders, PEMS

Funding: ARC Discovery Grant 2011 - 2013Materials which are either magnetic or ferroelectric are essential for modern information technologies. In multiferroic materials both properties ferroelectric polarization and ferromagnetic order exist simultaneously. This makes these materials extremely useful in devices where the coexistence of both charge and spin components can be exploited and one property can be used to drive the other. The potential technological applications are significant. For example, the combination of both switchable properties, the magnetic order and the electric polarization, on one data storage device would enhance the amount of stored data by at least five orders of magnitude, i.e. a one megabyte memory stick becomes a one terabyte memory stick.

Therefore, the search for new materials with these combined properties and the understanding of the physical effects behind these phenomena are essential for the development of an entire class of future multifunctional devices.

Experimental methods used in this study include magnetization at UNSW in Canberra, neutron scattering techniques at OPAL (in collaboration with the Bragg Institute at ANSTO) and advanced synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques overseas (Swiss Light Source and Bessy in Berlin).

This year, PhD student Andrew Princep determined the electronic shape of the magnetic 4f orbitals in rare earth borocarbides (Fig. 1a), PhD student Maciej Bartkowiak calculated the ferroelectric distortion due to heavy oxygen doping in para-electric strontiumtitanate (Fig 1b), and Annemieke Mulders demonstrated that magnetic order stabilizes the ferroelectric order in multiferroic LuFe2O4 (Fig 1c).

scraMspace supersonic combustion flight testResearchers: Dr Sean O’Byrne, Associate Professor Andrew Neely, Dr Tapabrata Ray, Joseph Kurts, Mark Aizengendler, Dr Carlos Rodriguez, SEIT

Students: Yedhu Krishna, Sven Wittig, Obaid Ur Rehman, Arnab Dasgupta

Funding: Australian Space Research Program

This project is part of the Australian Space Research Program SCRAMSPACE project, performed in conjunction with the University of Queensland and 13 other national and international organisations. The aim of the project is to successfully launch a scramjet with an axially symmetric nozzle to achieve supersonic combustion at Mach 8 over a range of altitudes. UNSW Canberra is contributing its expertise in laser diagnostics, thermal paints, optimisation and control theory to the project.

In 2011 we continued the development of a diode-laser-based oxygen sensor to measure the flow speed

and temperature in the inlet of a supersonic combustion ramjet engine. The design phase was completed, and construction of a prototype has begun. We have developed miniaturised laser current and temperature controllers that can be used under flight conditions. Our group has developed models of the expected heating of the sensor during flight, and has tested the performance of the diode lasers under these extreme temperature conditions and integrated the optical sensor with the rest of the scramjet payload. Progress has also been made in development of hypersonic control algorithms and development of constrained optimisation algorithms for development of optimal inlet designs.

a study of some physical properties of concentrated salt solutionsResearcher: Professor Ric Pashley, PEMS

Funding: ARC Discovery Project Grant 2012 - 2014In this project we plan to refine a new method for the precise measurement of the latent heat of vaporisation of some unusual concentrated salt solutions. We will also develop a new method for the production of fine particles through controlled particle growth and develop a more energy efficient process for the regeneration of ion exchange resins.

The inhibition of bubble coalescence in concentrated salt solutions facilitates the design of a bubble column with a high volume fraction of small air bubbles, continuously colliding but not coalescing (see figure). This type of bubble column can produce a uniform, efficient system for the transfer of water vapour into the bubbles, which can then be condensed and collected as pure water. We have also shown that the rapid cooling effects caused by this process can be used as a novel method for measuring the latent heat of vaporization (DHv) of concentrated salt solutions. This method also produces a uniform, gradual increase in solute concentration, which can be used for the controlled production of fine colloidal particles.

Ion exchange resins offer significant advantages for the efficient desalination of salt water. However, their efficiency is limited by the need for large volumes of acid and base to regenerate the depleted resin. We will develop a regeneration process without the need for these acid and base solutions. This process could substantially improve the efficiency of the ion exchange process and extend its range of applications.

understanding and predicting sediment distribution and net transport in estuaries and coastal oceans with an emphasis on the Formation and transport of Muddy bottom layersResearcher: Associate Professor Xiao Hua Wang, PEMS

Funding: ARC Linkage Project 2011 - 2014The problem of environmental degradation of coastal waters is particularly serious because multiple environmental pressures mount on these regions. In more and more places on earth the historical sandy coast is being replaced by a muddy coast, which represents a significant and permanent environmental degradation (Wolanski, 2007). The issue of increased muddiness of coastal waters is an ecological and socio-economic issue for coastal communities in tropical Australia and China. For instance the Cairns coastline was sandy 100 years ago and is muddy at present. This problem of increased muddiness is likely to be also felt in Darwin Harbour if this science is not considered and addressed in harbour developments. China on the other hand started muddying its coastline over 7000 years ago (Zong et al., 1997) and much of its coast is now muddy with enormous socio-economic implications including major siltation problems of most of its ports and harbours. This project will design and implement a field campaign to observe fluid mud layers in Darwin Harbour and Shanghai Port, China, and develop predictive models to investigate these layers. This research will give new direction to port management by developing adaptive tools to solve water quality and siltation problems in muddy ports and harbours in Australia.

exploiting the extraordinary aerodynamics of bees and hoverfliesResearchers: Dr John Young, Professor Joseph Lai, Dr Tapabrata Ray, Dr Richard Bomphrey, Sheila Tobing, SEIT

Funding: UNSW GoldstarA recent Australian Geographic article [1] notes that flapping flight in animals is “nothing less than pure magic, one of Nature’s most amazing tricks. Yet it happens every day and we don’t give it a second thought. Maybe this is because the animals make it look so easy.” Yet it is anything but easy, either in understanding all of the details, or in trying to mimic that performance. For example, bees have very small wings in relation to their body yet can carry very heavy pollen loads. Hoverflies are some of Nature’s best hoverers, able to maintain a fixed position over the ground in gusty conditions.

By using our proposed computational fluid dynamics techniques with novel optimisation methods, we aim to build upon our work published in the journal Science [2] to address two largely unanswered fundamental

questions: how do insects such as these fly so well despite their differences in sizes, shapes, motions and wing structures; and can we surpass nature’s performance in flapping wing flight?

The funding will allow PhD student Sheila Tobing to travel to the Oxford University Animal Flight Group to coordinate simulations with the available experimental data. It will also allow purchase of additional high-performance computing resources for the research group.
