FOREWORD F or more than a decade, Scientia remains to be an avenue to generate discourse and discussion in various disciplines in the country. True to its commitment in the pursuit of knowledge and Truth, San Beda College continues to support the birth of new ideas through the rigors of research and elaborate argumentations. This commitment can be traced back to the Benedictine abbeys and monasteries that have served not only as a place of spiritual solace, but also great centers of learning in medieval Europe. As an institution that draws its constant inspiration from the teachings and principles of St. Benedict, San Beda College believes that an authentic desire for learning leads ultimately to the love of God. For the 2014 Liberal Arts issue of Scientia, we are publishing a total of twelve scholarly articles, eight of which are written by some of our most esteemed colleagues from the College of Arts and Sciences while the remaining four were written by scholars from a different academic institution (one from the University of Santo Tomas, two from Ateneo de Manila University, and one from De La Salle University). Various areas of the philosophical sciences are well represented. From Political Philosophy to Philosophical Theology, from Ethics to Cosmology, from Phenomenology to Hermeneutics, our contributors have tried to wrestle with Western concepts and ideologies to come up with conclusions that will push the frontiers of human knowledge even further. Historiography, Literary Criticism, and Translation are also represented. Delving into the intricacies of language and culture, the authors have tried to resolve the issues faced by historians, litterateurs, and translators. Needless to say, these articles represent a careful scrutiny of problems, a presentation of viable hypotheses, and a conscientious argumentation of their proposed conclusion. All of these are done to excite the reader to argue, criticize, discourse, and in the process, generate new ideas. Once again, the Editorial Board wishes to express its most profound gratitude to the Very Reverend Fr. Aloysius Ma. Maranan, OSB, Rector-President of San Beda College and Dr. Tessie R. Da Jose, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, for making this Liberal Arts Issue of Scientia possible. We also would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all our reviewers who helped us assess and deliberate on the scholarship of all articles submitted. Moses Aaron T.
